Classroom Issues and Strategies
Most of the Bryant selections in the anthology are ruminative poems about the nature of life and the nature of nature. Some students really like this sort of thing, but substantial numbers are allergic to it. The most effective strategy I have found is to provide visual back-up in the form of a Hudson River School slide show. A fancy version would parallel English Romantic poets (especially Gray, Cowper, and Wordsworth) and painters (e.g., Constable and Turner). Bryant is a fine example of a writer who was not only popular but famous in his day. He can be used to open a discussion of the social and historical implications of such popularity (why it comes and why it goes), the essentially political character of anthologies (yes, even this one), and the idea of "fame" in connection with contemporary poets and poetry. For students (and they are many) who do not naturally respond to Bryant, the questions generally run to "Why are we reading this?" Or, more decorously, "Why was he so popular?" Yet, they do respond to him as an example of how the American high culture invented itself. In an altogether different vein, the personal philosophy expressed in "Thanatopsis" has some enduring appeal.

In the sixteenth year of his age, Bryant entered an advanced class of Williams College, in which he soon became distinguished for his attainments generally, and especially for his proficiency in classical learning. In 1812 he obtained from the faculty an honourable discharge, for the purpose of entering upon the study of the law, and in 1815 he was admitted to the bar, and commended the practice of his profession in the village of Great Barrington, where he was soon after married. When but little more than eighteen years of age he had written his noble poem of "Thanatopsis," which was published in the

Bryant Homestead Bryant Road, Cummington, MA 01026
Property Description The boyhood home of one of America's foremost 19th-century poets, the William Cullen Bryant Homestead is a National Historic Landmark. Purchased in 1789 by Ebenezer Snell, Bryant's grandfather, the Homestead and its surrounding countryside inspired much of young Bryant's poetry such as "The Rivulet" and "To A Waterfowl." After a law career in Great Barrington, Bryant moved to New York City to become editor and publisher of The New York Evening Post , where he served for 50 years. His family sold the Homestead in 1835. Thirty years later Bryant re-purchased it as a summer retreat and converted it from a center-stair colonial to a Victorian cottage. The house collection includes colonial and Victorian pieces from the Bryant and Snell families and memorabilia collected on his extensive travels to Europe and Asia. He added an ell to the barn to store apples and pears from his orchards. The Trustees of Reservations owns 195 acres of Bryant's pastoral estate, largely unchanged for more than 150 years. The maple tree allee planted by the Bryant family, the old growth forest on the Rivulet Trail, and the sugar bush used by Bryant and his brothers contain trees that are almost 200 years old.

William Cullen Bryant
William Cullen Bryant was a young lawyer when his poem "Thanatopsis" first appeared in the North American Review in 1817. Inspired by the romantic lyrics of William Wordsworth, Bryant found his subject in the American landscape, especially that of New England. By 1825, critics on both sides of the Atlantic called him the finest poet in the United States. But reputation alone could not support his family, and in 1826 Bryant joined the New York Evening Post . By 1840, Bryant had largely abandoned poetry to become one of the country's leading advocates for abolition. From 1856 on, the Evening Post was a Republican paper, supporting the arming of abolitionist settlers in Kansas, deriding the Dred Scott decision, and celebrating John Brown as a martyr. In 1860, Bryant introduced Abraham Lincoln before the audience at Cooper Union in New York. Later, Bryant and the Evening Post influenced Lincoln's decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Brady photographed the powerful editor in New York around 1860. See Thomas Cole Imperial salted-paper print, ca. 1860

A silence, the brief Sabbath of an hour, Reigns o'er the fields; the laborer sits within His dwelling; he has left his steers awhile, Unyoked, to bite the herbage, and his dog Sleeps stretched beside the door-stone in the shade. Now the gray marmot, with uplifted paws, No more sits listening by his den, but steals Abroad, in safety, to the clover-field, And crops its juicy-blossoms. Noontime Ah, never shall the land forget How gush'd the life-blood of the brave, Gush'd warm with hope and courage yet, Upon the soil they fought to save! Courage Ah, passing few are they who speak, Wild, stormy month! in praise of thee;

The reader is supposed to be less frightened by the aspects of death because in the end everyone is one (Unitarian) in Nature which also refers to God because Romantics beleived that in order to get closer to God there was no middle man . They felt that by surrounding themselves in Nature they could "communicate" with God. The poem also disestablishes social classes ans ranks because death is the equalizer and nobody is better than anyone else. From: It's Romanticism because William Cullen Bryant is a romantic and fireside poet. There was actually a time period in literature that refers to romantics. • William Cullen Bryant 1794–1878
    American poet, editor, critic, travel sketch writer, translator, short story and sketch writer, satirist, and historian.
    INTRODUCTION
    The most accomplished and popular American poet of the first half of the nineteenth century, Bryant also was the first American poet to receive substantial international acclaim. Bryant is considered an early proponent of Romanticism in American literature, and his work is often compared thematically and stylistically to that of English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Opposing eighteenth-century poetic conventions and using experimental iam bic rhythms, Bryant's poetry usually meditates on nature and the transience of earthly things. Although its themes were few and its thought not profound, Bryant's verse possessed a simple dignity and an impeccable restrained style, most notably in "Thanatopsis" (1817) and "To a Waterfowl" (1821), the poems for which he is best remembered. Since Bryant also spent more than fifty years of his life as editor of the New York Evening Post , a career which ranks among the longest in American journalism, he never fully developed his poetic talents. However, Bryant's literary efforts make him an important, if somewhat overlooked, figure in American poetry.

Cedarmere served as the rural Long Island home of Bryant from 1843 until his death in 1878. Bryant purchased the home as a retreat from the pressures and congestion of the city, so that he could work on his poetry and indulge his love of nature. Born in Massachussetts in 1794 to parents whose ancestors traced their history in America to the Mayflower, Bryant was educated at Williams College and studied law at Worthington and Bridgewater, gaining admission to the bar in 1815.
