    Ace Fantasy
This is book One in the adventures of Vlad Taltos, an unlikely of heroes. The book begins with: “There is a similarity, if I may be permitted an excursion into the tenuous metaphor, between the feel of a chilly breeze and the feel of a knife’s blade, as either is laid across the back of your neck. I can call up memories of both, if I work at it. The chilly breeze is invariably going to be the more pleasant memory.”
The world in this series started much like ours. But long long ago t he Jenoine, powerful aliens, came to this planet. They split the population in two; the Easterners were much like us, lived to 50 or 60 years and used witchcraft. Then there were the Dragaera Empire, with people much taller and much longer-lived. Yet we find out that these people were altered by the Jenoine mixing their genetic material with those of the animals native to the planet: seventeen animals to be specific. These people broke into houses named after the animals. And each house takes a turn in ruling the empire.
Vlad, our lonely easterner, is living in the Dragaera Empire. But he has become muscle for the mob, the house Jhereg. Now he is getting paid to beat up and eventually kill those who always picked on him and put him down.

trust me Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? I like almost everything Brust's writtenI was never able to get through Gypsy , which he wrote with (I believe) Megan Lindholm , or To Reign in Hell . The remainder I have mostly liked quite a lot, and have read many of them aloud to Jane. Most of his books concern one Vlad Taltos, assassin, organized crime boss, and generally nice guy (no, really). Vlad is a member of House Jhereg, one of the 17 houses comprising the Dragaeran Empire. He is, however, not Dragaeran, but humanor "Easterner" as the Dragaerans would call him. Easterners living outside of the Dragaeran Empire think of the Dragaerans as elves, but you'd have to search quite a long way to find anything more different than Tolkien's elves. Dragaerans do, however, live for many hundred years, and tend to scorn Easterners as subhuman. Each of the Dragaeran houses has its own distinct character and physical characteristics; House Jhereg specializes in underhandedness, dirty dealing, and organized crime, and is not above selling titles of nobility. That's how Vlad got in; his father was a social climber. Despite Vlad's profession, the series is quite enjoyable, and often funny. The first book is

        Dzur by Steven Brust
        Reviewed by Genevieve Williams
21 June 2007 Vlad Taltos is back. Not only is there a new book in Steven Brust's popular series, but Vlad is back in Adrilankha, having fled the city following the events in Phoenix and spending four books on adventures elsewhere. As with previous books in the series, some familiarity with the earlier entries is required to make sense of the plot, particularly Issola , which Dzur immediately follows. Literally: Issola ends with Vlad's intent to visit his favorite restaurant; as Dzur opens, he's just walked in the door. Of course, Vlad being Vlad, it isn't long before he finds himself embroiled in a new adventure. He's barely gotten into the appetizers at Valabar's when he is joined in quick succession by a Dzur named Telnan (hence the book's title; each in the series is named for a noble house of the Dragaeran world, and that house is prominently featured in the plot) and a legendary assassin, and is forthwith alerted to dangers to his wife, Cawti, resulting from a turf battle over criminal activity in South Adrilankha. The rest of the novel largely concerns Vlad's attempts to find out who is responsible and kill them. Additionally, Brust has chosen to pattern the novel's plot after one of the most sumptuous multicourse offerings one could imagine. Each dish, course, and wine is expressly (if not always explicitly) related to the action of the chapter that follows it, and the results can be both affecting and surprisingly dramatic. It's debatable whether

In the beginning, there was cacoastrum , the stuff of chaos. As the flux shaped itself, it occasionally created illiaster , the fabric of order. A being of illiaster was spontaneously created, imbued with self-preservation, and this being fought against the cacoastrum. In the struggle, six more beings were created, and together, the seven created a vast hollow orb that temporarily sealed out the chaos. These were the Firstborn: Yaweh, Satan, Michael, Lucifer, Raphael, Leviathan and Belial. During the Second Wave, the walls of Heaven collapsed, and the Firstborn fought again, rebuilding their stronghold, and in the process, hundreds of archangels were created. This happened yet again, and the ordinary angels were created. Download‚

Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Saturday, June 17, 2006 Fans of Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series: do not read any review of Dzur (out in August) other than this one. There are two surprises in the Prologue, one small and one big, and while it's hard to call them spoilers since they're in the Prologue, it's so much fun to experience them as surprises. (The jacket copy is safe.) Fortunately, the basic plot can be sketched without revealing these surprises. After the series-changing events of Issola , Vlad has gone for a meal at Valabar's in Adrilankha. There, he finds that his estranged wife Cawti is having problems: they were both in the Organization (think Mafia); he'd left her the Organization's interests in South Adrilankha when he left town several books back; and now the Left Hand of the Jhereg, a sorcerous organization, is moving in. (As the Organization is also known as the Right Hand, this allows the utterly deadpan statement, "It's unfortunate, how little the Right Hand knows what the Left Hand is doing.") For various reasons, Vlad agrees to help Cawti, despite the personal danger to himself (he didn't leave town for a vacation, several books back). Actually, if you need that backstory, you shouldn't be reading this book. Start with

really supplied us. We get the latest Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award winners rarely and seemingly randomly. My personal belief is that the circulations librarian walks along the shelves of the warehouse counting to herself, one two three PULL! and drops the book she has selected into the cart. Done! More science fiction for those drooling hordes! Pull! , because just in the last few weeks, a number of shiny new Brust books have shown up on our shelves. Or, since I see there are now ten books in his Vlad Taltos series alone, maybe the increase is just because Brust is a very busy man. He and Mercedes Lackey should get some kind of award, all to themselves, just for hard work. I wish I could produce like that. I started in the Vlad Taltos series at the Issola book, and just finished the latest, Dzur . For those of you who, like me, have not read the preceding eight or nine books, the first question I can answer is yes, you can Amber series, and though these back-cover marketing blurbs usually amuse (or annoy) the heck out of me, in this case, the book pimps have a point. The hero does sound a lot like a Zelazny voice.
