Dzur is the 10th novel in the long-running series. The first book was Jhereg , whose improbable title first caught my eye, then the picture of the dragon on the cover. In those days Vlad was a street-smart tough guy who had risen to the position of a crime boss. His life was ordered. So were the murders that had to take place around him. Graft was well paid, and paid on time.
Dzur
But when he learns his estranged wife, Cawti, is having trouble with the old crime zone he used to run, Vlad steps once more into the fray trying to sort things out and save the people he cares about. The story is extremely simple, with few twists and turns along the way, but the constant bickering/dialogue between Vlad and Loiosh is as sharp as ever. After all these years, Vlad just seems real.
Mel Odom is the author of over 100 novels. Winner of the American Library Association's Alex Award for 2002 and runner-up for the Christy in 2005, he's written in several genres, including tie-in novels for

Vlad Taltos The Khaavren Romances The Viscount of Adrilankha
Steven Brust has written some excellent books, including the Dragaera novels, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend. I'm in the process of trying to track down the rest of his books which I have yet to read, and waiting impatiently for his new books. The main problem with Steven Brust is that he writes too slowly. The Vlad Taltos novels, the Khaavren Romances, and The Viscount of Adrilankha are set in Brust's Dragaeran lands, with the Taltos novels being based upon the short life of the assassin Vlad, a human who has been somewhat integrated into Dragaeran society, while the Khaavren Romances, which I loved, are somewhat more "historical" and discuss the middle periods of the Dragaeran empire. Some of the Vlad novels I really like, others were not as good, but bad Brust is still better than much fantasy on the market. I apologize in advance for any spelling errors. I've checked the page several times in an effort to find all the mistakes, but names that aren't in the spell check dictionary, combined with my poor typing skills tends to lead to mistakes. Please let me know when you find errors. Although I have compiled character lists for the Dragaera books, these are in no wise complete. They were simply but together for my own edification, and to answer questions about recurring characters, especially characters that occur in different series.

An Interview with Steven Brust
For what it’s worth, writer Steven Brust is my huckleberry. He could be your huckleberry, too. Brust’s two dozen books are pedestal-type examples of what modern fantasy is. In his books, there are no grouchy dwarves, no predictable quests and no talking cats. All of the trappings that have made this subgenre the pussy on the speculative fiction playground don’t appear in Brust’s creations. But that’s not what makes his work, well, work. What’s crucial to his fantastic tales is the story itself, which gallops through the characters like a runaway stampede. Above all else, Brust is a storyteller, even though his stories frequently involve otherwordly elements like floating castles in imaginary lands. Which isn’t to say that his characters don’t pull their weight as well. The best known may be Vlad the Assassin, whose introduction in Jhereg has led to a series of stories nine so far with each more nuanced and resonant than the last. But there are others, like The Phoenix Guards 's Paarfi or Cowboy Feng’s Space Bar and Grille ’s Billy or To Reign in Hell ’s Lucifer. These are the sorts of creations that stick with you, long after the book is back on the shelf.

Steven Brust Has Written a Firefly Novel. The Well-known SF/F author has written an original novel set in the 'Verse which has yet to be accepted for publication.
On his 10/1/2005 blog entry, he has the following to say about completing a rough draft:
As of this afternoon, the first draft of the Firefly novel (tentatively titled: My Own Kind of Freedom) is finished. This one is going to take a lot of revision, as I was (as usual) making it up as I went, and now that I know what happens, it's got to be set up right. But I'm pleased with having finished, and pleased with the book.
I don't know if he has a deal with the official people, or if he's going to shop it to them, but this is interesting. I'm not familiar with his work, but I've heard good things about it and from some of his other entries, he's a fan of the verse. If the verse is going to continue in any form, I'm hoping it'll be quality work. (Maybe somebody could lure Ben Edlund back into the comics field...) dottikin brust novelization firefly
Interesting. Have met Steve and his son, Corwin, a few times as they are local and friends of friends. Haven't spoken to the friends or the Brusts in quite some time however, or I would attempt to get some inside scoop.

    The Book of Athyra

In this omnibus, we get the complete texts to two books of the amazing Vlad Taltos series, Athyra and Orca . In a way, the fact that both of these books are together is very important, as the first introduces a main character for both, creating a back story that is absolutely essential for the second.

It was an innocent experiment, but it destroyed so much. Their Emperor, the Orb of power, and the capital city are all gone, destroyed by a magical mistake. Now people must try and find a new way of life. They are without even the simplest of spells upon which they have depended for so long. When Zerika, the Heir of the Phoenix is discovered, hope for a renewal of this old way of life comes back, bringing together a group of swashbuckling heroes who will gladly risk everything for an adventure.
    The Book of Taltos
    by Steven Brust
    reviewed by William Thompson
The character of Vlad Taltos is one of the more singular in contemporary American fantasy. An assassin for the introspective, with vulnerabilities and foibles that are all too human, Vlad inhabits a rather unique and jaundiced world and culture that somehow works and prospers despite its best, or worst, efforts. Bearing a certain skewed resemblance to our own, the Dragaeran Empire (though no one would ever accuse the United States of imperial ambitions) is divided into seventeen Great Houses, around which each book to date has been titled. Vlad occupies the lowest caste, the Jherig, whose business interests run towards the unsavory.

By Tasha Robinson teven Brust has long been a fixture of the colorful, high-profile Minnesota writers' group called "The Scribblies." He's a familiar fixture at Midwestern conventions. Infamous for his outfits (particularly "The Hat," as it's commonly known) and his musicianship, he tends to be a larger-than-life presence in person. He plays guitar, banjo and drums, including the doumbek. He's written collaborative novels with Emma Bull ( ) and Megan Lindholm ( The Gypsy ), composed songs for the Celt-rock band Boiled In Lead (which produced a CD companion to The Gypsy ), played and recorded with Cats Laughing (which appeared briefly in an issue of the X-Men spinoff XCalibur ) and Morrigan and released a solo album

I've been waiting a long time for this book.
Brust's Jhereg series, about the adventures of a sometimes-thug, sometimes assassin Vlad Taltos, is one of the best 'live' fantasy series out there. He delivers elves and swordplay (everybody's favorite, admit it) without succumbing to the numbing sameness that affects much of today's generic medievalesque fantasy.
Taltos lives in a world dominated by tall, near-immortal Dragaerans, all of whom are sorted neatly into clans bearing the names of animals. Humans (Easterners) make a living mostly in the corners of this society. Taltos found his path with the Jhereg (basically the mob), named after a breed of scavenging lizards. He also happens to have two of said lizards as companions to whom he is telepathically linked. After working with the Jhereg for a number of years, he pissed them off wildly enough that the biggest price in history is on his head and he's been in hiding for a number of years. Now and then he emerges from obscurity long enough to have interesting adventures involving the most powerful Dragaerans in the realm and, sometimes, gods.
The most recent of said encounters endowed him with an unusual weapon whose capabilities he is still feeling out, and an unusual relationship with a goddess who seems to have been messing with his head.

"Cowboy Feng's Space Bar and Grille"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark MAR 20, 1998) "Cowboy Feng's Space Bar and Grill has the best matzo ball soup in the galaxy. Lots of garlic, matzo balls with just the right consistency to absorb the flavor, big chunks of chicken, and the whole of it seasoned to a biting perfection. One bowl, along with maybe a couple of tamales, will usually do for a meal. As for entertainment, Feng gets some of the best Irish musicians you'll ever hear — good instrumental backing, fine singing, some stupendous fiddle playing, and driving energy. Hell, some of the songs are actually Irish." This is of similar genre as Douglas Adams Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series in the sense that it is absurd, but hangs together as a fun sci-fi story. Maybe not quite as funny and definitely not as cynical.

Steven Brust is a New York Times best-selling author well known for his Vlad Taltos series. He is a versatile writer, both of books and of songs. His other books include a series written in the style of Dumas, an epistolary novel, and a sparely written vampire book that never mentions the word "vampire."
Some of Steve's own songs range from "Latex Man" to "Neil Gaiman Pastiche #27." "I Was Born About Ten Million Songs Ago" was selected for Doctor Demento's "Best of the Year" compilation in 1993. Various songs have been published on Steve's weblog and not recorded. He has also written songs for world beat band Boiled in Lead.
