Executive summary: The Shockwave Rider Military service: British Royal Air Force (1953-1955) Prolific science fiction author John Brunner is best known for his novels The Sheep Look Up The Jagged Orbit Stand on Zanzibar (1968), and The Shockwave Rider (1975). Brunner was noted for his cynical insight into the workings of society and the human psyche as well as for his eerily accurate forecasts of technological and social trends. He is especially credited with having predicted the Internet and for having originated the term "data worm". This and other forecasts about computers, coupled with his predictions of bioengineering, have ranked him as the literary predecessor to cyberpunk authors such as Bruce Sterling and William Gibson . Brunner's famous cynicism meanwhile led him to rail against assorted pseudoscience hucksters, among them

for INFO NATION "For all the claims one hears about the liberating impact of the data-net, the truth is that it's wished on most of us a brand-new reason for paranoia." John Brunner, "The Shockwave Rider", 1975. John Brunner contributed to the world's science fiction heritage for over forty years. Publishing his first novel at age 17 in 1951, he continued to put out traditional "hard" science fiction through the fifties and sixties. Among several dozen titles he produced, four stand out: "The Sheep Look Up", "The Jagged Orbit", "Stand on Zanzibar", and "The Shockwave Rider", all published between 1968 and 1975. "Stand on Zanzibar", which won a Hugo award in 1968, moved Brunner out of deep-space adventures and into the near-future dystopias which were popular in the late sixties and early seventies (think of the films "Soylent Green" or "A Clockwork Orange"), and which prepared the way for the cyberpunk movement. The world of "Stand on Zanzibar" is an overpopulated and generally stressed-out world of the early 21st century. This is a world beset by all variety of problems, some related to diminishing resources, some related to the breakneck progress of technology. But it's a world not far removed from our own: nation-states still hold power, some people still have regular jobs, people even still use paper mail and voice phones. The main motif of "Stand on Zanzibar" is the stress-symptom: what happens to people when there are starting to be too many of them? Brunner makes shrewd guesses not so much about science or catastrophe, but about how politics, society and even pop culture would be affected. He coins a future slang word "mucker" to describe a person who snaps under the stress and flies into a homicidal rage.

27. John Brunner: A Remembrance
A short memorial to brunner written on the occasion of his death in 1995.

John Brunner: A Remembrance
The following remembrance was written on the occasion of the death, on 25 August 1995, of science fiction writer John Brunner, at the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, Scotland: John Kilian Houston Brunner wasn't just a famous pro writer to me. He was a friend of mine for the past 20-odd years. I can't say just when I was first aware of his work, but I remember reading Stand on Zanzibar upon its publication in 1968. That was an impressive piece of work, by a writer with a great cynical bent and an understanding of what makes people tick and why things go wrong and that was precisely the sort of insight he was best at bringing into science fiction. Our personal association began, I think, in 1972, when I read a short story of his, "Planetfall," which was contained in a collection, From This Day Forward . It was a brief mood piece about a girl in a run-down spaceport town who meets a boy from a spacefaring generation ship that puts down in the port for supplies; they meet and talk for only a night and then separate, never to meet again. I was 19 and a budding composer, and so I thought, "This would make a wonderful short opera!" Of course I had to have his permission, and I wrote him care of Doubleday & Co. I don't know what some other writers would have done, but John wrote back in the friendliest terms and said he would like to see me give a try at the project. He didn't know who I was, he'd never heard a note I'd written, and for all I know he may not have known where Santa Monica (where I then lived) was. But the idea that someone wanted to take his story (if not his actual words), and make an opera out of it, was exciting to him. We had a lively conversation in letters for some months, in which we exchanged ideas on music (about which he knew a great deal), on liberal and radical politics (about which he knew even more), about anything and everything. And then finally he happened to visit Los Angeles. He would be staying at the home of Kris and Lil Neville, and some other friends would be popping by, and he

  • Brunner, John 1934–
Brunner is a British author of science fiction novels, short stories, and poetry. His themes are humanistic, centering on the continuity of the human condition, and the psychological and physical survival of ordinary man. Brunner is a satirist, utilizing humor that is both playful and sardonic. Even at his most bitter or ironic, the events, atmospheres, and attitudes he describes have definite parallels with reality. Formerly a pilot, Brunner participated for several years in the British nuclear disarmament movement, an experience which has colored some of his works. Brunner is occasionally criticized for letting social protest override his literary sensibility, but he is generally recognized as one of science fiction's most controlled and realistic writers. JOHN BRUNNER
(U.K., 9/24/1934- ) Brunner, John (Kilian Houston) An abituary... Del Rey Books has been publishing John Brunner since its founding in the late 70s, and we are saddened by his passing last week at WorldCon in Glasgow. I took over editing Brunner in the late 80s, having loved his books for years. John was an incredibly talented writer and an exacting author. He wrote science fiction in a classic style. His view of the future was not a rosy one; his stories often foretold the dangers of the short-sighted uses to which technology is put, sounding a warning to us all that while technology can enhance human life in wonderful ways, there is another, darker side to technology and a price to be paid for technological advancement. In recent years, John had often told me that he found it difficult to write stories set out in the wide reaches of the galaxy because he couldn't see how humanity could ever get there. But earlier this summer I had lunch with John and his wife in New York, and John seemed slightly more hopeful than he had been before as we tossed around ideas for a new Brunner epic. It is a shame that we'll now never learn what wonderful new worlds John might have imagined, or have the pleasure of reading about them in John's unique prose.
