      T HE year's at the spring,
      And day's at the morn;
      Morning's at seven;

      Breath and bloom, shade and shine, wonder, wealth, andhow far above them

Richard Kennedy asserts that Asolando , published the day Browning died, was a fitting cap to this great poet's career and, indeed, is a more outstanding achievement than several of his earlier works. This volume breaks new ground in Browning studies by fusing biography and critical commentary to provide the fullest single account of this poet's last years and his last volume of poems. "Kennedy's study of Browning's Asolondo is a useful and instructive introduction to the poet's last volume, often neglected, more often misunderstood because of its 'personal' tone. Robert Browning Biography - Poems
Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, Surrey on May 7th, 1812. He is the son of Robert and Sarah Wiedemann Browning. Robert's father worked as a clerk for the Bank of England and managed to amass a library of obscure and arcane books. His mother was a devout nonconformist. Robert also had a younger sister who was highly gifted. In his early childhood, Robert was seduced by poetry and natural history. By the age of twelve he finished his first book, although it was later destroyed due to him not finding a publisher. Robert greatly showed his displeasure for school life. He studied at several facilities before becoming home schooled by a tutor.

    INTRODUCTION
    Though Browning was eventually considered a premier Victorian poet, his critical reputation was hard won. Throughout his career, he honed the dramatic monologue, elevating the form to a new level. His experimentation with versification and with language, combined with the diversity and scope of his subject matter, forced Browning's critics to realize that this poet could not be evaluated by conventional literary standards. Particularly devoted to dramatic characterization, Browning explored the human psychology through his characters and the dramatic situations he presented. Modern critics are concerned with Browning's poetic development, with the themes that unite the various poems in a particular volume, and with the unique elements of Browning's innovative style.
    Biographical Information
    Born in Camberwell, a borough in southeast London, Browning was raised in a relatively affluent environment. His father was a well-read clerk for the Bank of England, and his mother was a strict Congregationalist. While Browning read widely as a boy, his formal education was somewhat irregular. Beginning in the early 1820s he attended the nearby Peckam School, where he studied for four years. Because Browning had not been raised as an Anglican, he was unable to attend the major English universities, Oxford and Cambridge. Instead, in 1828 he entered the recently-founded London University but terminated his studies after less than one year. Browning decided to pursue a career as a poet and lived in his parents' home, supported by them, until 1846. He published his first poem

    "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came"
    (See Edgar's song in "Lear ") My first thought was, he lied in every word,
    That hoary cripple, with malicious eye
    Askance to watch the working of his lie
    On mine, and mouth scarce able to afford
    Suppression of the glee that pursed and scored
    Its edge, at one more victim gained thereby.
    What else should he be set for, with his staff?
    What, save to waylay with his lies, ensnare
    All travellers who might find him posted there,
    And ask the road? I guessed what skull-like laugh
    Would break, what crutch 'gin write my epitaph For pastime in the dusty thoroughfare, If at his counsel I should turn aside Into that ominous tract which, all agree, Hides the Dark Tower. Yet acquiescingly I did turn as he pointed: neither pride Nor hope rekindling at the end descried, So much as gladness that some end might be. For, what with my whole world-wide wandering, What with my search drawn out thro' years, my hope Dwindled into a ghost not fit to cope With that obstreperous joy success would bring

    Open to guests and visitors, Casa Guidi in Florence, where Robert and Elizabeth Browning spent their idyllic married life, offers us a firsthand glimpse of their lasting passion for Italy, poetry, and each other. On the afternoon of September 12, 1846, fragile poetess Elizabeth Barrett defied her tyrannical and fanatically religious father, Edward, the widowed scion of rich Jamaican slaveholders. With faithful maid, Elizabeth Wilson, her only companion, she slipped out of the family home on London's Wimpole Street and married Robert Browning in secret at St. Marylebone Parish Church. She was forty; Robert was six years younger. She was already acclaimed for her verses; he was yet to achieve widespread fame. The couple was passionately in love. They had met in May 1845, though Robert was already an admirer of Elizabeth's poetry and had been writing love letters to her for several months before their first meeting.

    Sordello , he could have given an account of the man and an account of his father and his grandfather. But if a man had asked him what he thought of himself, or what were his emotions an hour before his wedding, he would have replied with perfect sincerity that God alone knew. This mystery of the unconscious man, far deeper than any mystery of the conscious one, existing as it does in all men, existed peculiarly in Browning, because he was a very ordinary and spontaneous man. The same thing exists to some extent in all history and all affairs. Anything that is deliberate, twisted, created
