Sterling A. Brown, "Out of Their Mouths" (1942)
Deep Southa Soliloquy "Why do you reckon white folks act like they do? I sit home studying them. A cracker is like this. He will cut his own throat just to see a Negro die along with him. Further and more, they're fussing and squabbling among theirselves so much that a man can creep up behind them unbeknownst to 'em and hit 'em on the head. "Take Talmadge, that narrow-minded rascal. All this trouble, war, soldiers being killed by the thousands, hostages being killed, bombs falling on women and little childrenand all he can do is woof about 'coeducation of the races' or 'segregation.' Somebody ought to dump him on his head in some sea or other. "This war now. It looks like they don't want you in the navy, army, or marines. Just like before the war they didn't want you anywhere you could make a dime out of it. When those Japs first started out in the Pacific, I thought Negroes ought to thank their lucky stars that they weren't on those ships going down with the white folks. Then I got to studying and knew I was wrong. Onliest way we can get anything out of this war is to put all we can in it. That's my best judgment. "The diffunce between the northern and the southern Negro is that the northern is a freeborn-minded Negro, but the southern is trained to say Yes-sir and No-sir all the time. That don't mean the southern Negro won't fight, but he's just more kinderhearted. The gurvenmrent is exchanging them, sending one to the north and one to the south.

Long Track Blues (Sterling A. Brown)
Continuing the series of "stories behind the songs" from my new album, American Songs volume 2 , we reach one of my favorite poets: Sterling A. Brown.
If you've missed the stories behind the songs in previous posts and would like to catch up, please use these links:
Story behind the song: If you are a regular reader of this blog, you have certainly noticed the name Sterling Brown once or twice before. Sterling A. Brown was born in Washington D.C. in 1901 and died in 1989. He continues to be one of the most influential African-American Poets of all time.
What I love about Sterling Brown's poetry is his sense of rhythm and cadence. He wrote a lot about jazz and blues, and those two musical forms obviously had a great influence on the sound of his poetry...the poems almost sound like they are *meant* to be sung. So Anthony, Carter, and I got together and decided to put "Long Track Blues" to music. Carter did an amazing job with the guitar work...he captured the gutwrenching melancholy perfectly, and it even sometimes sounds like you can hear a train off in the distance.

Brown’s ‘Southern Cop’
Irony and Racism
Linda Sue Grimes Feb 10, 2007
Sterling Brown's "Southern Cop" portrays a complex drama of anger, authority, rage and racism; the speaker of this poem is more important than the characters in the poem.
Irony Expresses Anger
The speaker of the poem is an angry citizen, whose emotion is so strong that he feels he must resort to verbal irony to express that rage. His assumes his Black audience feels exactly as he does. But he also recognizes that a racist audience will identity with him literally, even though to take him literally shows how bankrupt the exhortations would be: Because Ty Kendricks was a rookie who needed to prove himself, we should decorate him for shooting an innocent man. This is ludicrous, yet the speaker does not really make clear just what Ty Kendricks does deserve. His emotion builds with each stanza from the first line of the first stanza that would seem not to be ironic at all to the first line of the last stanza that is obviously ironic. The actual irony of the poem is not apparent until halfway through the second stanza.

Brown's Sterling Nissan
Sterling VA
Advertisement Sheila of Sterling VA writes (5/15/01):
I first visited Brown's Sterling Nissan in Sterling, Va. on May 1, 2001 to look at a 2001 Pathfinder LE 4WD. During this visit, a Salesperson by the first name of Benjamin assisted me. Upon learning that I was interested in a particular colored vehicle (Gold) that was not in stock, I was informed that such a vehicle could be located for me. The Salesperson and Sales Manager, John Hanes, also strongly insisted that I leave a check for $100, which was supposed to let them know that I was serious about purchasing the vehicle. Therefore, I wrote a check for $100 on May 1, 2001 to Brown’s Sterling Nissan. The next day I received a phone call from the Salesperson, who indicated that a car the exact color that I was interested in was located and ready for me to pick up. On May 2, 2001 I arrived at Brown's Sterling Nissan and immediately requested to test drive the car that they had located (which had 160 miles on it) before I purchased the car. This request was met with some resistance at first, but eventually was granted. Upon test-driving the vehicle, I noticed a revving in the engine that I was uncomfortable with and concerned about. I expressed my concerns about the engine noise and indicated that I wanted a male cousin, who is a member of the US Marine to test drive the car with me and advise me on the purchase. I was told that I could bring my cousin back on Saturday, May 5, 2001 to test drive the car. Later, after conferring with several friends that own either Nissan Pathfinders or other Nissan vehicles, I was advised that the vehicles did not normally make such noise.

Strong Men by Sterling A. Brown The young men keep coming on
The strong men keep coming on

SANDBURG They dragged you from homeland,
They chained you in coffles,
They huddled you spoon-fashion in filthy hatches,
They sold you to give a few gentlemen ease. They broke you in like oxen,
They scourged you,
They branded you,
They made your women breeders,
They swelled your numbers with bastards. . . .
They taught you the religion they disgraced. You sang: You sang: Bye and bye You sang: Walk togedder, chillen, Dontcha git weary. . . .
The strong men git stronger. They point with pride to the roads you built for them They ride in comfort over the rails you laid for them They put hammers in your hands You sang: Strikes lak mine, bebby, Strikes lak mine.

Slim in Hell
An excerpt from "Slim in Hell" by Sterling A. Brown:

St Peter said, "Well,
You got back quick.
How's the devil?
And what's his latest trick?
And Slim say, Peter,
I really can't tell.
The place was Dixie
that I took for hell. Then Peter say, "You must be crazy, I vow Where in hell did you think hell was anyhow?" His spoken word imitated the many voices of Southern Black experience. Born May 1, 1901 in Washington, D.C., Sterling Brown pursued his interests in blues and jazz, while his father taught religious studies at Howard University. /Stay tuned, more to come. Mark D.
