The surge of feminism in the 1970s gave impetus to many new women writers, such as Erica Jong, author of the sexy and funny Fear of Flying (1974), and Rita Mae Brown, who explored lesbian life in Rubyfruit Jungle (1973). Other significant works of fiction by women in the 1970s included Ann Beattie's account of the post-1960s generation in Chilly Scenes of... No results were returned. BIO If you are reading this, it means you too managed to be born. How we come into this world affects our experience of the world, and I hasten to add that none of us asked for the adventure. However, once here on earth, it is often delightful and occasionally destructive. Mother, Julia Ellen Buckingham, possessed the best eye for a horse I have ever witnessed. By now, I have had the good fortune to rub shoulders with some of the leaders in the Thoroughbred, Saddlebred and Quarter Horse world, but Mother still leads all for her ability to really see a horse. She haunted the tracks and there were many in Maryland in those days, plus children were allowed on the premises. Now, the sight of gambling is considered too risky for tender darlings. They, however, see bodies blown to bits in film and on TV, and no one bats an eye. I learned a lot on the black stretch of those country tracks as well as Laurel and Pimlico. I owe to Mother. Fortunately, I did not inherit the gambling gene unless you consider a career in the arts, probably a bigger gamble than Mother ever took in her life. I hitchhiked to New York, got a scholarship to New York University, Washington Square College, thanks to Dean Henry Noss, who overlooked my thick Southern accent and went by my test scores and my interview with him. I did have to take remedial speech to remedy the accent - cultural imperialism but effective for advancement.

Brown, Rita Mae (b. 1944) Lesbian poet and novelist Rita Mae Brown, best known for the highly successful Rubyfruit Jungle, resists neat categorization. Brown was born on November 28, 1944, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, to an unwed mother who turned her over to an orphanage. She was then given into the care of Ralph and Julia Ellen Brown of York, Pennsylvania, who eventually became her adopted parents. Sponsor Message.
When Brown was eleven, the family moved to Florida, where they remained throughout the rest of her childhood. She eventually enrolled in the University of Florida in Gainesville, where she campaigned for civil rights and greater racial integration. This outspokenness was responsible for her expulsion from the university in 1964. Brown then hitchhiked to New York City and lived for a brief time in Greenwich Village in an abandoned car. She struggled in poverty for a while but continued to write and remain politically active. She was an early member of the National Organization for Women but was expelled for insisting that the group give more recognition to their lesbian constituents. Brown attended New York University, where she earned a B.A. in English and the classics. In 1973, she received a Ph.D. from the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. While attending NYU, Brown published two collections of feminist poetry:

In 1969, when the National Organization of Women (NOW) was still in its infancy and not open to the notion of lesbianism, Rita Mae Brown blurted out at one of the meetings, "I'm tired of hearing everyone moan about men. Say something good about women. I'll say something good. I love them. I'm a lesbian." When I comment that that was a very courageous remark, she says, "Yeah, well, I'm a bad liar, so I might as well tell the truth." A h, the truth. You can certainly depend on Rita Mae for the truth. When reporter Liz Smith asked her, "Why do you have to tell people you're gay? What purpose does it serve?" she answered that it was wrong to lie. Smith replied, "Keeping quiet isn't lying." Rita Mae: "It's lying by omission."
