Interview with Dan Brown
By Claire E. White Dan Brown was born and raised in the small New England town of Exeter, New Hampshire. The son of a teacher at Phillips Exeter Academy, he grew up in a house full of books on a street where John Irving used to live. After graduating from Exeter and from Amhearst College, Dan followed in his father's footsteps by teaching English at Exeter. His debut novel, Digital Fortress (St. Martin's Press, 1998) is a heart-pounding techno-thriller about a beautiful and brainy NSA cryptographer who must defeat a madman's sick plan to cripple the U.S. intelligence community. With non-stop action, cutting edge intelligence data, romance and a very real controversy about personal privacy versus the threat of terrorism, the book is garnering rave reviews from critic and fans alike, and just went into its third printing. When he's not writing or touring for his new book, Dan can usually be found hiking, playing tennis or squash or indulging his passion for music composition. Dan spoke to us about his hot new novel and whether the digital age means the end of personal privacy forever. Did you always plan on being a writer?

What this image is, we don't know. That is, we know what the labels say, that it is a graphical map of E , “one of the largest and most complicated structures in mathematics,” but our minds instantaneously turn into primordial ooze trying to comprehended even a single aspect of it.
Nevertheless, it's perfect as a paving pattern, perhaps the centerpiece of a new urban plaza. Some will be lulled by its supremely logical order and resolved geometry, serenity in complexity.
Just as likely will many be empathetically pulled in and then violently ejected by its swirling patterns, while those unfortunate enough to reach the center will be gravitationally pulled down, like James Stewart taking a Hitchcockian plunge into the cinematic canvas. Or like Michelangelo's

Dismantling The Da Vinci Code
By Sandra Miesel “The Grail,” Langdon said, “is symbolic of the lost goddess. When Christianity came along, the old pagan religions did not die easily. Legends of chivalric quests for the Holy Grail were in fact stories of forbidden quests to find the lost sacred feminine. Knights who claimed to be “searching for the chalice” were speaking in code as a way to protect themselves from a Church that had subjugated women, banished the Goddess, burned non-believers, and forbidden the pagan reverence for the sacred feminine.” ( The Da Vinci Code , pages 238-239) The Da Vinci Code , rips it away to the realm of esoteric history. wholly Over the centuries, the Grail-keepers have been guarding the true (and continuing) bloodline of Christ and the relics of the Magdalen, not The Da Vinci Code But despite the frenetic pacing, at no point is action allowed to interfere with a good lecture. Before the story comes full circle back to the Louvre, readers face a barrage of codes, puzzles, mysteries, and conspiracies.

Communicating Design , by Dan Brown is one of very few books that address the subject of documenting a modern web design project. With chapters ranging from personas and usability testing to content inventory, sitemaps and wireframes, the book covers a lot of ground, with something for everyone; from project managers to interface designers. Dan Brown does a very good job of describing a potentially dull subject in useful ways. As a long time contributer to Boxes and Arrows and an active member of the Information Architecture community his experience comes through in the examples, and in particular the real world problems you may encounter when using the proposed deliverables. These sections on when, how and what to deliver to clients really raise the book into must-read territory. Overall Communicating Design is a good read, covering techniques that you can jump right in with, and providing hard earned, real world knowledge in digestable chunks. For anyone interested in improving their design documentation this will be a solid purchase, for anyone not interested in creating better documentation this should be required reading.

MAKING THE GRADE
TRUTH BEHIND N.Y. SCHOOL ‘SCORES’
By DAN BROWN
November 11, 2007 From Mayor Bloomberg's reforms to No Child Left Behind to a hungry twenty-four hour news media, public schools in America are being scrutinized and assessed like never before. While many critics have argued that judging schools solely on “metrics" is a dangerous and misleading practice, sometimes a hard look at the school stats themselves can make even the most ardent number-cruncher scratch his head in bafflement. The release of the letter grades understandably sent many parents, teachers and administrators into frenzy. Some schools with strong reputations, like P.S. 154 in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, were shocked to receive ugly marks. Schools branded with an “F" will permit students to transfer in the summer. Low-graded schools must submit action plans to show how they can increase standardized test scores. The hoopla surrounding the school report cards - particularly the shock and distress by publicly humiliated ones - reminds one of the headline-grabbing release of the “Persistently Dangerous Schools" list in late August of this year. Twenty-five New York City schools currently bear this reviled “dangerous" label, and are now subject to intense pressure from the Department of Education to reduce their incident report statistics.

FaithfulReader.com's contributing writer Marcia Ford takes a look at 11 books either on the market or in the works that respond to Dan Brown's bestselling and controversial novel THE DA VINCI CODE. She focuses on the varying perspectives of the authors, differences in the structure of the books and significant distinctions in content - and then reveals her choice for the best Da Vinci-related work. DA VINCI DEBUNKERS: Spawns of Dan Brown's Bestseller by Marcia Ford The owner of a Catholic bookstore sounded fairly desperate in an emailed message regarding the impact of THE DA VINCI CODE by Dan Brown : "We are getting bombarded daily by people who are buying into the garbage in this book…We even had an elderly aunt talking about Opus Dei tonight and yelling at us that the book is true or it couldn't be printed." Anyone who thinks the current spate of Da Vinci-related books is overkill need only read that comment and others like it from Carl Olson and Sandra Miesel's book (see below) to appreciate the need for responses to Brown. The bookseller's email summed up the problem with Brown's book: People believe his conclusions about the church and Christianity, and they're hopping mad about it. They feel they've been duped, and they're holding the church accountable for the deception.

Dan Brown - Biography
Dan Brown, best-selling author of 'The Da Vinci Code' was born on June 22, 1964. Brown grew up as the eldest of three children in Exeter, New Hampshire and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, a decidedly up-market school where his father was employed as a math teacher, in 1982. His mother, Constance, was a professional musician principally involved in performing sacred music. Although Dan Brown actually attended local public, (i.e. open-enrollment), schools until the ninth grade he nonetheless lived with his family on the Exeter campus and participated in a college related life that was also informed by christian values- singing in the church choir and attending church camp. Brown then attended Amherst College, graduating with a degree in English and Spanish in 1986 and spent several subsequent years attempting to establish himself as a singer-songwriter and pianist with only marginal success.
These endeavors did, however, lead him to live in Los Angeles where he taught Spanish at Beverly Hills Preparatory School to supplement his income and where he also met Blythe Newlon. This lady, - twelve years his senior, was then employed as Artistic Director of the National Academy of Songwriters. As their relationship developed Blythe used her influence in attempts to further Dan Brown's musical career.

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. Solving the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci...clues visible for all to see...and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.
Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion-an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. The Louvre curator has sacrificed his life to protect the Priory's most sacred trust: the location of a vastly important religious relic, hidden for centuries. In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to work for Opus Dei-a clandestine, Vatican-sanctioned Catholic sect believed to have long plotted to seize the Priory's secret. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's secret-and a stunning historical truth-will be lost forever.
