More from Dan Brown

When I was a kid growing up in the 1970s, there was nothing I loved to read more than the latest issue of The Uncanny X-Men or Captain Canuck
The ones I collected had a pulpy feel to them, and the prevailing attitude toward comics reflected the cheap paper on which they were printed: they were viewed as disposable, appropriate for children only. To be caught flipping through a comic 30 years ago was to be caught doing something juvenile and disreputable.
Not today. Comic books are now slick mini-magazines made with glossy paper and sold in specialty shops that cater exclusively to connoisseurs of the medium. The people who produce them, meanwhile, are considered serious artists and writers whose work is, if not on par with "real" literature, then close to it.
If you want proof that the passing of time has removed the taint from comics, just look at how many big-budget superhero movies will be released this year.

DECEPTION POINT
Reading Group Guides THE DA VINCI CODE Dan Brown BIO Back to top. AUTHOR TALK March 20, 2003 In this interview, Dan Brown talks about how he got the idea for his latest book, THE DA VINCI CODE, as well as his research and writing. Q: The sell line for your book mentions the "greatest conspiracy of the past 2000 years." What is this conspiracy? DB: Revealing that secret would rob readers of all the fun, but I will say that it relates to one of the most famous histories of all time…a legend familiar to all of us. Rumors of this conspiracy have been whispered for centuries in countless languages, including the languages of art, music, and literature. Some of the most dramatic evidence can be found in the paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci, which seem to overflow with mystifying symbolism, anomalies, and codes. Art historians agree that Da Vinci's paintings contain hidden levels of meaning that go well beneath the surface of the paint. Many scholars believe his work intentionally provides clues to a powerful secret…a secret that remains protected to this day by a clandestine brotherhood of which Da Vinci was a member. Q: Where did you get the idea for THE DA VINCI CODE?

Approximately three people still haven't read Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code Mark Liberman David Lupher , and reportedly at least one other person (as yet unidentified).* Menking Hannell , and over southern Oregon she told me it was great as usual. Unfortunately I had no better idea of what to do with my time, so I opened The Da Vinci Code I am still trying to come up with a fully convincing account of just what it was about his very first sentence, indeed the very first word, that told me instantly that I was in for a very bad time stylistically. The Da Vinci Code may well be the only novel ever written that begins with the word renowned . Here is the paragraph with which the book opens. The scene (says a dateline under the chapter heading, 'Prologue') is the Louvre, late at night: I think what enabled the first word to tip me off that I was about to spend a number of hours in the company of one of the worst prose stylists in the history of literature was this. Putting curriculum vitae details into complex modifiers on proper names or definite descriptions is what you do in journalistic stories about deaths; you just don't do it in describing an event in a narrative. So this might be reasonable text for the opening of a newspaper report the next day: But Brown packs such details into the first two words of an action Well, actually, there
