Christopher Brookmyre - Quite Ugly One Morning
Sun 27 March 2005 at 17:54 Comments (0) First of the Jack Parlabane novels. Brookmyre is still finding his feet with this one: the opening scene is one of the funniest I have ever read, but later parts of the book drag a bit, and the computer hacking sequence didn't work for me at all. Still, a good satirical comedy thriller, and a great introduction to the characters of the series. (This quick review is part of my September 2005 "clearing the decks" exercise.)

Something Good: Kenny Blyth reads Christopher Brookmyre
I had occasion to discuss my position on audiobooks recently while driving around Melbourne. Actually, I am a bit of a snob about it. As a general rule, I restrict my fiction audiobooks So, with that in mind, let me say that, for me One of those examples, to come to the point of this post, is Kenny Blyth reading Christopher Brookmyre comedy about a particular clever set of bank robbers , for example, something like Tibor Fischer The Thought Gang would soundly trounce Jonathan Cecil doing P.G. Scottish Crime Fiction: Christopher Brookmyre
As an ex-pat Scot it is always nice to come across some great Scottish writing. I just finished the book "A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil" by Christopher Brookmyre . It is a Glasgow-and-surrounding-area novel. It's a great book although at first I found myself somewhat befuddled by the jumping between the present day and twenty-something years before. In the end, it all makes perfect sense and I am looking forward to getting my wee hauns on another of his novels. There is a glossary at the end of the book which allows the Broad-Scots-challenged amongst us to understand the lingo a little better. (When I visited Glasgow ten years ago I all but had to use sign language to communicate to staff at a fish and chip shop that I was seeking a toilet - the accent can be quite disarming.)
My Rating: 5 hingmy's out of 5 for Scottish (Glasgow) cultural history, clever crime fiction and a great sense of humour.

      User Rating :
Respect : Good Points : Terrificly well written, fast paced, very funny and perceptive. Bad Points : None that I could see, but if you don't like a certain amount of blood and gore, or bad language, this might not be the one for you! General comments : The characters in Christopher Brookmyre's, One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night come over as extremely plausible, genuine, interesting (and quite nuts in some cases!). The plot is original and the humour very black. Mercenary-type soldiers think they've got an easy, if somewhat disconcerting task, but they have to pit their wits against a bunch of ordinary, yet resourceful, people. These people decided to accept invitations to a dubiously cast reunion, in a strange setting.

School Fitba - The Rules by Christopher Brookmyre
Apologies to Christopher for earlier incorrect credit. Christopher Brookmyre Website Back to Humour Duration Matches shall be played over three unequal periods: two playtimes and a lunchtime . Each of these periods shall begin shortly after the ringing of a bell, and although a bell is also rung towards the end of these periods, play may continue for up to ten minutes afterwards, depending on the nihilism or "bottle" of the participants with regard to corporal punishment met out to latecomers back to the classroom. In practice there is a sliding scale of nihilism, from those who hasten to stand in line as soon as the bell rings, known as "poofs" , through those who will hang on until the time they estimate it takes the teachers to down the last of their gins and journey from the staffroom, known as "chancers" , and finally to those who will hang on until a teacher actually has to physically retrieve them, known as "bampots"
This sliding scale is intended to radically alter the logistics of a match in progress, often having dramatic effects on the scoreline as the number of remaining participants drops. It is important, therefore, in picking the sides, to achieve a fair balance of

Country of the Blind - Christopher Brookmyre
Date: (257 review reads) Rating: Advantages: Delicious black humour and a lot of fun Disadvantages: Unoriginal, not a good starting place, and pantomime baddies Following the adventures in Quite Ugly One Morning, we fast forward not so very long to find Parlabane living in domestic bliss and about to get hitched. As part of the engagement package, Parlabane has promised his soon-to-be-missus that he'll give up the, urm... more dangerous, dodgy and downright illegal parts of his investigative journalism career.
Of course, that's before a former adversary of our hero is found in a plush stately home with his throat cut. The story takes up the aftermath of the death of powerful media tycoon, Roland Voss, who is found slaughtered along with his wife and bodyguards. The culprits seem obvious: the burglars caught fleeing the scene covered in blood. But if it's that obvious, why did one of the men pay a visit to his lawyer a few days beforehand, and what are the secret contents of the envelope he left with her - something that seems to be worth killing for?

A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil by Christopher Brookmyre
View Gallery A 'DOUBLE-body barbecue' has been discovered just outside Glasgow – two corpses, partially burnt and hastily, although unsuccessfully, hidden in the woods. When Detective Superintendent Karen Gillespie is called to the scene, the first thing she realises is that this is not a case of a criminal mastermind at work.
The crime scene itself holds an atmosphere of distinctive incompetence – with the first attempt to dispose of the bodies by dissolving them in drain cleaning chemicals failing, it's clearly apparent that those responsible then attempted to burn the corpses – but woefully underestimating the time they would take to cremate.
With two suspects quickly established, it looks like a simple case for DSI Gillespie – simple, but surreal – as the criminals in question were former classmates from Gillespie's old primary school.
