C RIME fiction is a broad church. So too are most book festivals. Other than finding their books vaguely in the same section of the shop, there would be little to link Christopher Brookmyre and Anne Perry, the former satirical, cynical and evangelical in his atheism, liberally and regularly sprinkling his books with blood, body parts and sweary words, while the latter looks back to a different age where decorum was prized and whose strong moral outlook in her book is coloured by her Mormon faith and themes of redemption which have deep personal resonance. It would be hard to image such two different crime writers sharing the same stage, which is perhaps why Inverness Book Festival director Jason Rose arranged their appearances three days apart. First up was Brookmyre, once, briefly, a resident of Inverness a few years ago, but for his latest book, "A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil", he was looking back even further to his primary school days in the West of Scotland, sowing the seeds of a present day murder mystery in the childhood experiences of a gang of pupils at a Catholic school, experiences which, however outlandish, are drawn closely from his own memories. "I made a point with this book that I was going to use just about exclusively real events from my school days," he revealed. "Most of the characters aren't based on real people, but the events really happened and some of the events that might seem grossly exaggerated actually happened."

From now on, though it will always make him feel the same, it will remind him only of this place. she The teacher turns to the other girl, who still has her hand up, still looks very happy, like she really did get a present. Martin watches the others take their places one by one, seeing the next row fill up. To his right is a girl called Alison, who was crying when her mummy left and still looks very feart. He had been hoping to end up next to Scot, but he is two rows away on the left, his name having been among the first ones called. While Joanne is doing her rounds, there is a knock on the classroom door, and a man in blue overalls enters, carrying a big orange plastic crate.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Mystery While Christopher Brookmyre's latest novel is titled 'The Sacred Art of Stealing', and with good reason, the opening passage and many to follow demonstrate that Brookmyre himself is a master of the profane art of ranting. Any readers left standing after the prose-as-a-machine-gun volley that begins the book are in for a treat. In his seventh novel, Brookmyre brings back Angelique De Xavia, the heroine of 'A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away' and presents her with a delicious romantic and criminal conundrum: What do you do when you're the cop and you fall for the robber? Remembering, of course, that in Brookmyre's skewed universe, to quote the character, "Just because I'm a bank robber doesn't mean that I'm the bad guy." The plot is a crackerjack magic box that unfolds with the precision of a mega-budget action thriller. Once the opening salvoes are fired, Brookmyre lays out a robbery-with-hostages situation that is both hilarious, touching and filled with electric-wire tension. And rants. Oh yes, the rants. With Brookmyre, most of the fun is in getting there. If the first paragraph doesn't have you calling up your friends to read it into their voicemail, then you can go directly to Angelique, who will deliver her take on romance shortly. Because, between all the misdirection, the magic, the clever-as-clever-one-could-possibly-hope-it-to-be staging of the robberies, the reversals and the police poltroons that De Xavia is forced to work with, 'The Sacred Art of Stealing' is a romance through and through.

Christopher Brookmyre breaks a rule ...
... and it's a big one, too. I don't mean the rule that says never build a humorous scene around bodily functions. In fact, bodily functions take second place to a misplaced vibrator and slip in just ahead of a broken ankle and a string of double entendres in the scene in question, from Brookmyre's novel Boiling a Frog
No, the rule is that which enjoins authors to show rather than tell. An early scene between a pair of political minders breaks off for a lengthy flashback on the life, philosophy and political predicament of one of them. That's ten pages in which conversation comes to a halt, and action stops. It's a daringly long piece of back story, especially in a genre normally built around plot.
But the flashback, even if surprising and a bit worrisome at first, works on at least two levels. First, parts are bitingly funny:

Edinburgh: a brutally murdered doctor, an attractive but dodgy investigative journalist, the attractive ex-wife of the dead doctor, a mad, scheming, corrupt child of Thatcher, a brutal thug who can't stick to a plan. Trainspotting meets Cop Show . If there wasn't quite so much blood, guts and vomit, it would make a lovely three parter for Carlton. The plot: Jack Parlabane returns from LA in a hurry - he's been treading on too many toes. His neighbour Ponsonby is murdered, and not just murdered: really nastily murdered. So the first few pages reek of vomit and stomach-churning detail of gore. The motive: when the ex-wife of said doctor, Sarah, turns up, the plot thickens. Also a doctor, she is able to provide insights into the doctors possible shady practices while in the employ of the local health authority. This is billed as a post-Thatcherite nightmare. There is something rotten in the state of Britain. The dialogue can be cracking, there is a good enough plot, and lots of lovely contemporary urban references. But somehow

Firefly Christopher Brookmyre, Scottish crime writer notable for previous pop culture references to Buffy and the A-Team, has a major character in his new novel Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks who is an all-out Browncoat. The first tip-off was a character named Malcolm Reynolds but that could be a coincidence for a story set in Scotland. Then an Inara/Kaylee reference which might have been a throwaway.
