    Biography:

Christopher Brookmyre first hit the British bookshelves in the summer of 1996 with Quite Ugly One Morning, a scurrilous satire on the then Conservative government’s NHS reforms. The book won the inaugural Critics’ First Blood award for the best first crime novel of the year, but is destined to be remembered principally for featuring a huge jobbie on a mantelpiece in its opening chapter. Its sequel, Country Of The Blind, provided a second outing for morally ambiguous uber-hack Jack Parlabane, this time tenaciously probing who killed media-mogul Roland Voss (not least because Parlabane would have quite liked to do it himself). Brookmyre’s third novel, the Los Angeles-set Not The End Of The World, takes on millennial hysteria, Christian fundamentalism, pornography, cheesy b-movies and bad hair. It has been described as “gloriously unsound”. Christopher Brookmyre was born in Glasgow in 1968, and has worked as a journalist in London, Los Angeles and Edinburgh, contributing to Screen International, The Scotsman, the Edinburgh Evening News and The Absolute Game. Contrary to the official version, Quite Ugly One Morning was in fact his fourth novel, but the first one to find a publisher. It followed two veritable duffers and a more promising third, which has subsequently been optioned for a film adaptation. He is married with no parasitic spawn.

Glasgow-born Brookmyre worked as a journalist in Edinburgh, London and Los Angles before his first novel, Quite Ugly One Morning was published in 1996 to wide critical and popular acclaim. He followed this with a succession of best selling crime novels which are laced with equal measures of very black humour, arch Scottish cynicism, brilliant observations and sharp satire. Despite being uncompromisingly Glaswegian, Brookmyre's writing has an appeal far beyond Scotland and has garnered a number of awards including the First Blood Award (for the best first crime novel) and the Sherlock Award for the Best Comic Detective. Jennie Renton This is the edited transcript of a question and answer session with thriller writer CHRISTOPHER BROOKMYRE at North Edinburgh Arts on Wednesday 16 March 2005. How much of Carl Hiaasen did you read before you started writing? Well, I think it's fairly well documented that I wrote three novels that weren't published before I wrote Quite Ugly One Morning and then I read just about everything by Carl Hiaasen in the space of about six months, shortly before writing Quite Ugly One Morning . It was very much my style of humour, but I think the thing that inspired me was that he was doing something that I had never seen in British thrillers: making them outrageously funny and very over the top and yet still dealing with issues that were heartfelt on the part of the author. At the time my wife was coming home to me every night and ranting about what was going on in the NHS and so these two ideas came together. The other thing that I found quite inspiring with regard to a lot of American writers is they weren't afraid to create heroes that you actually liked, that you enjoyed spending time with. You could give a few one liners to them and even make them a little more resourceful than is entirely plausible. I'd rather have such a guy as my hero than another maudlin alcoholic; a character who is so beset with marriage problems and such that he's not much fun to be around - by the end he's solved the mystery in spite of having a really miserable time.

    Christopher Brookmyre
Award-winning novelist Christopher Brookmyre gave the ninth annual General Teaching Council for Scotland National Lecture on the 15 May 2007 at the University of Glasgow. The Sir Charles Wilson lecture theatre was packed to capacity with over 295 people including teachers, GTCS employees and members of the public attending. Christopher started his talk by refusing to call it a 'lecture' and saying how he dislikes being used as a 'rent-a-quote' to comment on a wide variety of issues purely by virtue of his writing success. As a result, he told the audience, he would not be pontificating but reading some passages from his latest novel based on experiences of school – 'A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil.' The St Mirren fan, who apologised in advance for being hoarse after roaring the Buddies to victory on Saturday afternoon, had the audience in raptures with a hilarious, moving and often cringe-worthy tale of school life in the fictional town of Braeside. Christopher, whose mother was a teacher, said he'd written often about education in his books and had considered becoming a teacher.

I went to a book-signing in Waterstones in Newcastle yesterday. It was, as you may possibly have speculated from the title of this post, a book signing done by Christopher Brookmyre It was therefore nice to get the opportunity to go and meet the bloke and have him read a couple of chapters of his latest book to me. Not only that, but he performed a magic trick for us. He got a number of members of the audience to write down their name and favourite film on pieces of paper, place them inside envelopes, seal them, and hand them to the front. He then held them up to his forehead and read out what they were. In fact, he read out my name and my favourite film, it was just the first one I liked that I thought of at the time. He also claimed not to have any paranormal powers, saying instead that it was a trick which was explained in the book.
    • The envelopes were quite thin, and when he put them down on the desk he shone a light through them to see what was written
