The Bronte Archives Emily Bronte is IMHO the greatest poetess who ever lived. Despite my many friends who have attempted to tell me that "good poetry" must be obscure and symbolic, I contend that good poetry is that which speaks directly to you. It is the poetry to which you immediately relate. Such are the works of Emily Bronte. On this day in 1848 Emily Bronte died at the age of thirty. Of all the death and drama in the Bronte household over the surrounding eight months events which now stand as famous and poignant as any in the Bronte novels none seems to impress or import more than Emily's. Her "powerful and peculiar" character, said Charlotte, inspired "an anguish of wonder and love." top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Wuthering Heights

Emily Bronte
Emily Bronte was born in Thornton, Bradford in 1820. Shortly after her sister's brith the family moved to Haworth, Yorkshire where she spent most of her life. Emily lived a short and somewhat constrained life but although she didn't write very much her novels and poems have become classics of English literature because of their emotional intesity and rare power. Emily is best known for her Romantic novel Wuthering Heights, which is one of the English language's  greatest romantic novels and some say; has yet to be passed.
Her poetry is striking because it seems to speak clearly to the reader and is uncluttered with obscure forms and languages.
 Paul Leider writes:
"In her poetry, Emily Bront« achieves a remarkable effect by the energy and sincerity, and often by the music, with which she portrays her stoicism, independence, and compassion in stanzas which in many instances are the commonplace vehicles used by mere rimers. It is as though she were brought up to feel that certain forms of verse were the patterns, and had, with dogged acceptance, poured into them her emotions with an honesty that made the outward form seem negligible"

Emily Bronte (pen name: Ellis Bell) Emily Brontë was the middle of the three famous Brontë sisters who were novelists and poets. She wrote under the name Ellis Bell. Emily Brontë is credited as one of the major sources of inspiration for Emily Dickinson poetry (the other was Ralph Waldo Emerson). Her major work, Wuthering Heights , and her only known novel, was often treated in the 19th century as a work of immorality, too much passion. Critics do not know when Wuthering Heights was written nor how long it took to write. Some critics have argued that Branson Brontë, brother to the three sisters, wrote this book, but most critics disagree. Emily Brontë on this site Emily Brontë on the Web

Emily, the most introspective of the Brontë sisters was briefly educated at school but so disliked being away from her home that she returned and continued with more informal schooling. Her early attempts at writing included poetry. Her work conveys a sense of mystery and longing that she experienced in her life. Her only novel, Wuthering Heights , is considered to be technically brilliant, with forthright and passionate language used to tell a fascinating saga. The brilliance of this novel was only acknowledged after her painful death from tuberculosis.

Perhaps the greatest writer of the three Brontë sisters - Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Emily Brontë published only one novel, WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1847), a story of the doomed love and revenge. The sisters also published jointly a volume of verse, POEMS BY CURRER, ELLIS AND ACTON BELL, but only two copies of the book was sold.

    Emily Bronte (1818-1848)
"Emily Jane Bronte was born at Thornton in Yorkshire on 30 July 1818, the fifth of six children of Patrick and Maria Bronte (nee Branwell). Two years later, her father was appointed perpetual curate of Haworth, a small, isolated hill village surrounded by moors. Her mother died shortly after her third birthday and she and her sisters and brother were brought up by their aunt, Elizabeth Branwell. Apart from a few short periods, she remained in Haworth. Her only close friendships were those with her brother Branwell and her sisters Charlotte and Anne; only three perfunctory letters by her survive. "From accounts by those who knew Emily Jane Bronte, there emerges a consistent portrait of a reserved, courageous woman with a commanding will and manner. In the biographical note to the 1850 edition of Wuthering Heights , Charlotte Bronte attributes to her sister 'a secret power and fire that might have informed the brain and kindled the veins of a hero', while Monsignor Heger, who taught her in Brussels, was impressed by her 'powerful reason' and 'strong, imperious will'. "Emily Jane Bronte began writing poems at an early age and published twenty-one of them, together with poems by Anne and Charlotte, in 1846 in a slim volume titled
