Not as many are aware that she lived a life as rich in adventure, romance, and tragedy as her famous novel.
As I wrote the book, I combined the rich material of her life with the political and sexual intrigue beneath the prim morality of Victorian England. I tried to give Charlotte the adventure she craved. The Secret Adventures of Charlotte Bront Excerpt Characters Quiz home ... guestbook

Charlotte Bront« was born in Thornton Yorkshire England , the third of six children, to Patrick Bront« (formerly "Patrick Brunty"), an Irish Anglican clergyman, and his wife, Maria Branwell. In April the family moved a few miles to Haworth , where Patrick had been appointed Perpetual Curate. Maria Branwell Bront« died of cancer on 15 September , leaving five daughters and a son to the care of her sister Elizabeth Branwell. In August , Charlotte was sent with three of her sisters; Emily, Maria, and Elizabeth, to the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire (which she would describe as Lowood School in Jane Eyre ). Its poor conditions, Charlotte maintained, permanently affected her health and physical development and hastened the deaths of her two elder sisters, Maria (born 1814) and Elizabeth (born 1815), who died of

Conditions there were bad even by the standards of the time, and it was not long before both Maria and Elizabeth became ill enough to be sent home, where they both died of consumption in the spring of1825. Patrick brought Charlotte and her younger sister Emily, who had recently joined them at the school, back home as soon as the other girls became ill, but Charlotte in particular never forgot what the school had been like The surviving kids all became each others' best friends. They created the kingdom of Gondal and wrote all kinds of epic stories and poems set in that realm. Charlotte and Branwell were in charge of Angria proper, while Emily and Anne (the youngest) ran the neighboring kingdom of Gondal. Charlotte's next adventure was going to school in Brussels with Emily in 1842. Charlotte's time there was brief, less than two years, but it led to her eventual writing of Villette beginning in 1852. Back home, Charlotte lapsed into chronic unemployment and severe hypochondria, actually thinking she was going blind, just like her father was. In 1846 the three sisters published a book of Poems , and though sales were very slow, the reviews were good and spurred on further literary endeavours. Charlotte's novel of this time

This page last revised 13 May 1997 Jane Eyre The children wove tales and legends associated with Africa around a box of twelve wooden soldiers. Later came other narratives about the kingdom of Angria. This youthful writing informs the later fiction of the sisters. In 1845 Charlotte discovered poems written by Emily and proposed a joint volume of verse entitled Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell (1846), the pseudonyms of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. The volume passed unnoticed by the reading public. Charlotte then encouraged publication of their finished novels. Her own work, The Professor , was rejected by the publishers, but she was encouraged to write Jane Eyre , which appeared in 1847. It attracted huge public interest. Family tragedies followed and by the summer of 1849 Charlotte was the only surviving child. She married her father's curate, Revd. A.B. Nicholls, in 1854 but she died the following March. She published Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1853.

Thanks to Evelyn Roth , we are able to present a real historical phrenological examination of the well-known author
This examination was performed on June 29, 1851, by London Phrenologist Dr. Browne. Charlotte represented herself as Mrs. Fraser. Dr. Browne therefore could not know who she really was.
Money is not her idol, she values it merely for its uses; she would be liberal to the poor and compassionate to the afflicted, and when friendship calls for her aid she would struggle even against her own interest to impart the required assistance- indeed, sympathy is a marked characteristic of this organisation.
Is fond of symmetry and proportion, and possesses a good perception of form, and is a good judge of colour. She is endowed with keen perception of melody and rhythm. Her imitative powers are good, and the faculty which gives manual dexterity is well developed. These powers might have been cultivated with advantage. Is a fair calculator, and her sense of order and arrangement is remarkably good. Whatever this lady has to settle or arrange will be done with precision and taste.
She is endowed with an exalted sense of the beautiful and ideal, and longs for perfection. If not a poet her sentiments are poetical or are at least imbued with that enthusiastic glow which is characteristic of poetical feeling. She is fond of dramatic literature and drama, especially if it be combined with music.

  • Jane Eyre (1846)
  • "In 1824, the four eldest girls were sent to Cowan Bridge School which Charlotte recreated as Lowood in Jane Eyre . Its poor conditions hastened the deaths of Maria and Elizabeth (who died from tuberculosis in the same year) and damaged Charlotte's health permanently. "The time Charlotte spent at her second school, Roehead, between Leeds and Huddersfield, was far happier. She later returned as a teacher but gave up the post to set up her own school at Haworth with Emily. To acquire further qualifications the two sisters visited the Pensionnat H‰ger in Brussels where Charlotte fell hopelessly in love with M. H‰ger, later satirized in Villette . Her first novel, The Professor , was rejected, but she went on to write Jane Eyre , which is her true claim to greatness. "Charlotte refused three offers of marriage but in 1854 she consented to marry her father's curate, A. B. Nicholls. The marriage, however, was short-lived for the following year Charlotte died from an illness associated with pregnancy."
