Rumor has it that there be Americans who are never happy unless passing for Englishmen. And I think I have discovered a like anomaly on the part of the sons of Ireland—a wish to pass for Frenchmen. On Continental hotel-registers the good, honest name of O'Brian often turns queer somersaults, and more than once in "The States" does the kingly prefix of O evolve itself into Van or De, which perhaps is quite proper, seeing they all mean the same thing. One cause of this tendency may lie in the fact that Saint Patrick was a native of France; although Saint Patrick may or may not have been chosen patron saint on account of his nationality. But the patron saint of Ireland being a Frenchman, what more natural, and therefore what more proper, than that the whole Emerald Isle should slant toward the people who love art and rabbit-stew! Anyway, from the proud patronymic of Patricius to plain Pat is quite a drop, and my heart is with Paddy in his efforts to get back.

~ Philippians 4:8 ~ or many years, I have enjoyed the company of Charlotte Bronte. Even though she died over a hundred years ago, her voice did not. Her voice can be heard in the poetry she wrote, and in the novels she penned.
Among her novels, 'Jane Eyre' is, by far, her most well known work. 'Jane Eyre' 'Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre' . Ciran (pronounced kee-ran) Hinds's portrayal of Mr. Rochester was very well acted, as was Samantha Morton's Jane Eyre. However, Charlotte Bronte's novel is more than just a good story. It is a morality lesson that people of all generations can learn from. In this age of "throw away marriages", Charlotte's words still echo from the past: "Suddenly he [Mr. Rochester] turned away, with an inarticulate exclamation, full of passionate emotion of some kind; he walked fast through the room and came back; he stooped towards me as if to kiss me; but I remembered caresses were now forbidden. I turned my face away and put his aside.

As young adults, the sisters dedicated themselves to their writing and published a volume of poetry under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell in 1846. The first novels of Emily and Anne, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey The Professor , was rejected. Her second novel, Jane Eyre , was published in late 1847. Although controversial, the novel met with commercial success. Shirley was published in 1849. Villette , was published in 1852. In 1854, after lengthy opposition from her father, she married the curate of Haworth, the Rev. Arthur Nicholls, and traveled through Ireland with him shortly after their marriage. Later scholars and biographers have debated whether the couple was happy together, but their marriage lasted for less than a year. Only a few weeks after learning she was pregnant, Charlotte was diagnosed with pneumonia. She refused all food and water, complaining that they made her nauseous, and she died about six weeks later, on March 31, 1855. The Professor University of Missouri

From early childhood the countryside of heather-covered wild moors, still there today, provided inspiration for the sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, who all had work published under pseudonyms. It is difficult to focus on just one of these fascinating women. To speak of one is to bring in all three, for their fortunes were closely intermingled. Publishing new work seems to have been as hard a road 150 years ago as it is today. The first novel, Jane Eyre , was published in October 1847; it met with increasing success for Charlotte. (Sister of Emily Bronte Search Authors Search Books Raised at home thereafter, Charlotte, Emily, their youngest sister, Anne, and brother, Branwell, lived in a fantasy world of their own making, drawing on their voracious reading of Byron, Scott, Shakespeare, The Arabian Nights, and gothic fiction, and writing elaborate poetic and dramatic cycles involving the histories of imaginary countries. Charlotte's early writings revolved around the kingdom of Angria, about which she wrote melodramatic tales of passion and revenge. She spent a year studying at Miss Wooler's school in Roe Head (later relocated to Dewsbury Moor), and went back there to teach from 1835 to 1838; subsequently she worked as a governess. With Emily, Charlotte traveled in 1842 to study languages at a boarding school in Brussels; her close emotional attachment to her instructor, M. Heger, a married man, would later figure in her fiction. Charlotte and Emily went home after a year because of their aunt's death; Charlotte subsequently returned to Brussels for a year of teaching, 1843 to 1844. A joint collection of poems by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne published pseudonymously as Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell-appeared in 1846. The three sisters had in the meantime each written a novel, of which Emily's Wuthering Heights and Anne's Agnes Grey were accepted in 1847 for publication the following year. Charlotte's first novel, The Professor, based on her experiences in Brussels, was rejected by a series of publishers (it finally appeared posthumously in 1857).

She was surrounded by a gilt frame but I knew her In this study of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea I aim to consider the representation of the doubleness of selfhood, and how both between and within the two novels a continuous mirroring of double identity, (reflecting like a hall of mirrors), can be traced. I will concentrate chiefly on the duality of the female personae, although I will also consider briefly the concept of doubling across gender boundaries.
Miller maintains that 'doubles may appear to come from the outside as a form of possession, or from the inside, as a form of projection' [1]. Both novels explore this doubleness, between and within characters.
