Wuthering Heights (1847), a story of the doomed love and revenge. The sisters also published jointly a volume of verse, Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell , but only two copies of the book were sold. Gulliver's Travels (1726). Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Bramwell and Charlotte recorded their stories about the kingdom of Angria in minute notebooks. Between the years 1824 and 1825 Emily attended the school at Cowan Bridge with Charlotte, and then was largely educated at home. Her father's bookshelf offered a variety of reading: the Bible, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, Scott and many others. The children also read enthusiastically articles on current affairs and intellectual disputes in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine Fraser's Magazine , and Edinburgh Review Unlike Charlotte, Emily had no close friends. She wrote a few letters and was interested in mysticism. Her first novel

Three writers who influenced the direction of the English novel also happened to be sisters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte were all born in Thornton, England in the early 1800s. Their father Patrick was born in Ireland, educated in England, and became an Anglican clergyman. He and his wife had six children. The two oldest daughters, Maria and Elizabeth died before reaching adulthood. Of the remaining children, Charlotte was the eldest, born April 21, 1816; followed by brother Patrick Branwell, born June 26, 1817; then Emily, born July 30, 1818; and Anne, born January 17, 1820. Shortly after Anne's birth, their father accepted a position in Haworth, located within the Yorkshire moors. Mrs. Bronte died soon after reaching Haworth, and the children were cared for by an aunt named Elizabeth Branwell. In 1824, Charlotte and Emily were sent to Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire, but they returned within a year. The treatment at Cowan Bridge was considered harsh, and Charlotte later modeled Lowood School (Jane Eyre) after it. For the next several years, the Bronte children were taught at home. They invented games and told imaginary stories to each other. Charlotte attended Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head for one year in 1831, then returned home and taught her sisters. Charlotte returned to Roe Head as a teacher in 1835, but after suffering from depression and ill health, she resigned from her position. It was at Roe Head that Charlotte met her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Her many letters to Nussey have served as the best documentation of her life.

Daphne Du Maurier .........covers the life of Branwell Bronte and the many demons that plagued his life in The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte, written in 1960. As the second eldest of the Bronte siblings, she suggests from the start of her book that trouble began for Branwell at the early deaths of his sisters, Elizabeth and Maria. Each week he sat in church to hear his father, Rev. Patrick Bronte, moralize on sin, and the consequence of hell and brimstone. As a young boy, the effect of this and total fear for his own immortal soul may have been the beginning of his troubles. Later in life, he would not believe in prayer, for prayer to him would never be answered. Schooling As Charlotte, Emily and Anne were allowed to go off to school at an early age, a curious situation is mentioned. Patrick Bronte vehemently refused Branwell to attend school among other children. Branwell was reportedly high strung and Ms. Du Maurier suggests that there were possible signs of epilepsy, which at that time, would be viewed as insanity. Rev. Bronte was adamant about Branwell not attending school and would teach the boy himself at home. The Person Branwell is described as a small in stature, bushy red hair that was piled high on his head, giving him the appearance of added height, small eyes, and a large Roman-like nose, which balanced small spectacles. He is represented as a brilliant, fun and humorous young man.

BIO: A lovely portrait of the famous English BRONTE sisters, Anne, Emily and Charlotte, was painted by their brother, Patrick Branwell BRONTE and hangs in the National Portrait Gallery of London. Sadly, Branwell felt himself to be failure at painting and writing and took to drink. He declined into alcoholism and narcotics addiction, dying in his early 30s. Deeply shaken by his death, Emily caught a chill walking back across the rain-socked churchyard after the funeral and died three months later. Apparently their father, Patrick, outlived them all.
The Bronte family home is preserved and maintained in England by the Bronte Society. The Parsonage at Haworth, on the moors of West Yorkshire, in now a museum, retaining many of the family possessions.
A family member is curator of the Bronte Homeland Interpretive Centre at the former Drumballyroney church and school house in a quiet corner of Co. Down where the marvelous legacy of this extraordinary family is also being carried out.

Emily Bronte (1818-1848)
"Emily Jane Bronte was born at Thornton in Yorkshire on 30 July 1818, the fifth of six children of Patrick and Maria Bronte (nee Branwell). Two years later, her father was appointed perpetual curate of Haworth, a small, isolated hill village surrounded by moors. Her mother died shortly after her third birthday and she and her sisters and brother were brought up by their aunt, Elizabeth Branwell. Apart from a few short periods, she remained in Haworth. Her only close friendships were those with her brother Branwell and her sisters Charlotte and Anne; only three perfunctory letters by her survive. "From accounts by those who knew Emily Jane Bronte, there emerges a consistent portrait of a reserved, courageous woman with a commanding will and manner. In the biographical note to the 1850 edition of Wuthering Heights , Charlotte Bronte attributes to her sister 'a secret power and fire that might have informed the brain and kindled the veins of a hero', while Monsignor Heger, who taught her in Brussels, was impressed by her 'powerful reason' and 'strong, imperious will'. "Emily Jane Bronte began writing poems at an early age and published twenty-one of them, together with poems by Anne and Charlotte, in 1846 in a slim volume titled

Bronte, Anne Biography
Anne Bronte (1820-1849) - pseudonym Acton Bell English writer, sister of Charlotte Bronte and Emily Bronte. Anne Bronte is best-known of her AGNES GREY (1847) and THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL (1848), which are generally considered more conservative works than her sisters. The close-knit Bronte family have inspired many studies, in which Charlotte, the oldest child, is characterized as the most ambitious writer, and Emily the greatest genius. Anne has been described mild and the less-talented youngest sister although, but her novels were sharp and ironic. 'If you loved as I do,' she earnestly replied, 'you would not have so nearly lost me - these scruples of false delicacy and pride would never thus have troubled you - you would have seen that the greatest wordly distinctions and discrepancies of rank, birth, and fortune are as dust in the balance compared with the unity of accordant thoughts and feelings, and truly loving, sympathizing heart and souls.' (from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Anne Bronte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire. She was the youngest of six children of Patrick and Maria Bronte, and educated largely at home. After the death of her mother in 1821, and two other children, Maria (d. 1825) and Elizabeth (d. 1825), Anne was left with her sisters and brother to the care of their father. Other members of the family were Elizabeth Branwell, a Calvinist aunt, and the family servant, Tabitha Aycroyd, who knew many folk-tales. The girls most effective education was at the Haworth parsonage, in which Mr. Bronte settled the year before his wife's death. They read the Bible, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, Scott, and many others, and examined articles from

Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Bronte (April 21, 1816- March 31, 1855) was an English novelist, the eldest of the trio of Bronte sisters whose novels have become enduring classics of English literature. Bronte was born at Thornton, in Yorkshire, England, the third of six children, to Patrick Bronte, an Irish clergyman, and his wife, Maria Branwell. In April 1820 the family moved to Haworth, where Patrick had been appointed Perpetual Curate. Maria Branwell Bronte died of cancer on 15 September 1821, leaving her five daughters and a son to the care of her sister Elizabeth Branwell. In August 1824, Charlotte was sent with three of her sisters to the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire, (which she would describe as Lowood School in Jane Eyre). Its poor conditions, Charlotte maintained, permanently affected her health and physical development, and hastened the deaths of her two elder sisters, Maria (born 1814) and Elizabeth (born 1815), who died of tuberculosis in 1825 soon after they were removed from the school.

. He and his sisters grew up in the town of Haworth, a relatively isolated place, though not so bad as you may have heard. Maria died of cancer in 1821, and the two oldest daughters died of consumption in 1825 , which made the four surviving kids ( Charlotte , Branwell, Emily , and Anne ) really stick together. Together they created the worlds of Gondal and Angria, epic sorts of kingdoms populated partly by Branwell's toy soldiers. Branwell and Charlotte worked together on poems and stories about Angria (leaving Anne and Emily to work together on Gondal), and though he was very fond of writing, it was decided early on that Branwell would be a painter . He was apprenticed to a portrait painter named William Robinson, who passed all of his bad habits along to Branwell. William's most notable failure as a teacher was in neglecting to show Branwell the proper way to mix paint. His portrait of his sisters, which now hangs in the National Gallery and is quite popular, shows the problem with this: Branwell had originally put himself in the painting, then decided to remove his likeness by painting over it. This paint is now fading, revealing Branwell's ghostly image. Neat! In any case, Branwell quickly gave up the idea of making a living as a portrait painter. In late 1839, he went to tutor two boys in the Lake District
