I think my resolution should be to pay more attention to things. If traveling with the Doctor has taught me anything, even in just a few days, it’s that even the little thing I’ve learned, that I think I’ll never use in my life (like, for example, basic human anatomy, or random trivia facts about the lives of the Brontes) just might be incredibly important. Another resolution, I think, would be to try not to worry so much about time travel paradoxes. They make my head hurt. So much has happened in the last two days, there’s no way I’m going to get it all down in just one journal entry. I’ll see how far I can get….

Her hair was a very pretty light brown, and fell on her neck in graceful curls. She had lovely violet-blue eyes, fine pencilled eyebrows and a clear almost transparent complexion. She still pursued her studies and especially her sewing, under the surveillance of her aunt. " (Chitham, 1991, p. 39) One of Anne's activities during the holidays was playing at the Gondals with Emily. The first of Anne's known poems, "Verses by Lady Geralda", dates from Christmas 1836. The next, "Alexander and Zenobia", is dated July 1st, 1837. Both are set firmly in the world of Gondal. They deal with clearly fictional characters, and bear their signatures. Though there is disagreement over the categorization of Anne's poetry into Gondal and non-Gondal poetry, most of the poems which are 'signed' by Gondal characters seem to have been written during or immediately after periods of proximity to Emily. Anne and Charlotte do not appear to have been close during their time at Roe Head (Charlotte's letters almost never mention Anne) but Charlotte was concerned about the health of her sister. At some point prior to December 1837, Anne became seriously ill and underwent a religious crisis. (Mrs. Gaskell incorrectly gives the time of Anne's illness as a year later, in

She returned to Roe Head School in 1835 as a teacher, earning money for the family and enabling Branwell to study art. In 1839, Charlotte accepted a position as governess with the Sidgewick family, but left after three months and returned to Haworth. In 1841, she became governess in the White family; that position ended after nine months. In 1842 Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to study French and German at the Pensionnat Heger. When their aunt, Miss Branwell died, and each niece and nephew were left a small amount of money, the girls returned home. Charlotte went back to Brussels until 1844; she once again returned to Haworth. Charlotte and her sisters decided to open their own school, but their advertisements did not elicit a single response.

was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England. Her father, the Rev. Patrick Bronte, had moved from Ireland to Weatherfield, in Essex, where he taught in Sunday school. Eventually he settled in Yorkshire, the centre of his life's work. In 1812 he married Maria Branwell of Penzance. Patrick Bronte loved poetry, he published several books of prose and verse and wrote to local newspapers. In 1820 he moved to Hawort, a poverty-stricken little town at the edge of a large tract of moorland, where he served as a rector and chairman of the parish committee. The lonely purple moors became one of the most important shaping forces in the life of the Bronte sisters. Their parsonage home, a small house, was of grey stone, two stories high. The front door opened almost directly on to the churchyard. In the upstairs was two bedrooms and a third room, scarcely bigger than a closet, in which the sisters played their games. After their mother died in 1821, the children spent most of their time in reading and composition. To escape their unhappy childhood, Anne, Emily, Charlotte, and their brother Branwell (1817-1848) created imaginary worlds - perhaps inspired by Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726). Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Bramwell and Charlotte recorded their stories about the kingdom of Angria in minute notebooks. After failing as a paiter and writer, Branwell took to drink and opium, worked then as a tutor and assistant clerk to a railway company. In 1842 he was dismissed and joined his sister Anne at Thorp Green Hall as a tutor. His affair with his employer's wife ended disastrously. He returned to Haworth in 1845, where he rapidly declined and died three years later.

In 1842 Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to complete their studies. After a trip home to Haworth, Charlotte returned alone to Brussels, where she remained until 1844. Upon her return home the sisters embarked upon their project for founding a school, which proved to be an abject failure: their advertisements did not elicit a single response from the public. Charlotte and her sister Emily attended the Clergy Daughters' School, the harsh conditions of which were reflected in the school in Charlotte Brontë's novel, Jane Eyre. Charlotte took various jobs as well as taking some time at home teaching and playing with her sisters. She worked variously as a teacher and as a governess. In 1846, she published Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell with her sisters (Charlotte wrote as Currer Bell, using a man's name as was common for women writers in the early 19th century). She wrote a novel, The Professor , which was rejected during her lifetime but was published posthumously. In 1847, she published her best-known novel

Biography of Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)
Charlotte Bronte Charlotte Bront« was born in 1816, the third child of the Reverend Patrick Bront« and Maria Branwell Bront«. Patrick Bront« was an Anglican, Cambridge-educated clergyman of Irish birth. The couple had six children before Maria Bront« died of cancer in 1821. The Reverend Bront« subsequently treated his children Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Patrick Branwell, Emily, and Anne in a severe manner. He also had the five girls sent to school at Cowan Bridge. At the Clergy Daughter's school, conditions were poor. When fever broke out at the school, Maria and Elizabeth succumbed to the disease. Consequently, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne were withdrawn and brought home. The children's Aunt Bess, their dead mother's sister Elizabeth Branwell, became their new instructor. Though the four children were deeply affected by the death of their two sisters, they filled their spare time with endeavors to fulfill their imaginations. This was perhaps necessary given that the environment that surrounded them was the dreary moor of Yorkshire, England. For example, when their father gave Patrick Branwell a box of toy soldiers, they used these miniatures as a source of inspiration to begin their respective writing adventures. Thus, the Bront« children began to write at an early age at least partly as a response to the fantasies of their youth.

Lori Bell
, Dancing Needle Designs, April 1996 Maria Branwell completed her sampler April 15, 1791. She was 8 years old. Her sampler was a simple one, comprised of an alphabet, biblical text and a simple geometric border. It is worked with dark green silk and pink and ginger brown wool on canvas. Maria's sampler is the first of a unique family collection. The collection is not unique for the style or technical expertise displayed by the embroiderers. It's interest lies in the fact that three of Maria's daughters grew up to become noted Victorian authors; the Bronte sisters. Maria's sisters, Ann, Margaret, and Elizabeth Branwell each completed a similar sampler worked in the same dark green silk. Ann Branwell, later Ann Kingston, signed but did not date her sampler. Margaret Branwell signed and dated her work March 23, 1799. Sister Elizabeth finished her signed sampler on 11 October. The date has been lost due to a torn corner. On December 29, 1812, Maria Branwell married Reverend Patrick Bronte. In 1820 the family moved to Haworth, West Yorkshire, England, where Maria died a year later. In 1822 Maria's youngest sister, Elizabeth began caring for the six Bronte children. That same year the eldest Bronte children, Maria, age 8, Elizabeth, age 7, and Charlotte, age 6, each completed a sampler similar to that described earlier, except that they were worked entirely in ginger brown wool.
