Biography - Branwell Bronte
Branwell Bronte was born on June 26th 1817 at Thornton, Bradford in Yorkshire, fourth child of the six Bronte children. His mother died in 1821.
Branwell Bronte received no formal education, partly due to financial restrictions as his father was struggling to keep the family together after his wife's death. Branwell does not appear to have suffered as he was a very capable scholar with an enthusiastic desire to learn. He indulged in the Gondal stories and enjoyed writing with Charlotte.
In February 1836 at the age of 19 Branwell was proposed a freemason, and later became secretary of the Lodge. Meetings were held at the Black Bull until 1833 where they were held at Lodge St.
From June 1838 to May 1839 Branwell was working as a portrait painter in Bradford. In January 1840 he took up position as tutor for the Postlethwaite family at Broughton-In-Furness, in June 1840 he is dismissed. In April 1841 he was employed as Clerk in Charge of Luddenden Foot station near Hebden Bridge. While there he was known to frequent the Lord Nelson Tavern. In March 1842 he is dismissed from his post as there was found to be a deficit in the station accounts, attributed to Branwell Bronte's incompetence rather than theft. January 1843 Anne has managed to secure post of tutor for Branwell with the Robinson family at Thorp Green. In July 1845 he is dismissed from his post as tutor, It was discovered that he had an affair with Mrs Robinson.

Background
Branwell first came to the attention of the Kindred of York through his early attempts at poetry. Although these were notably unsuccessful, they attracted the interest of Marie, who found the moody and passionate young man enchanting. As 'Mrs. Robinson', she invited him to some of her mortal gatherings. Branwell was desperately in love with her and thought of nothing but ways of keeping her passion for himself. Her free manners and numerous other young male companions drove him to despair and he addressed a great deal of rather bad but very impassioned poetry to her. Marie had been pursued by ardent and despairing mortal lovers before and had acquired a high resistance to poems of any quality. Never the less, she found his fevered attentions amusing. She permitted him to seduce her and Branwell joined her little set of ghouls. Then, Lord Marcus met Branwell at one of Marie's parties. He conceived one of his great passions for the young man and set about trying to seduce him away from Marie. It might have remained nothing more than a brief obsession and would probably have passed, but for Marie. Seeing an opportunity to spite Marcus she petitioned the Council for permission to Embrace the young man. Although she didn't really mean to carry it through, she knew it would drive Marcus mad. In fact that's exactly what it did. Marcus waylaid Branwell as he was leaving Marie's house one night. Without explanation, he attacked, drained and Embraced him. The experience proved too traumatic for the already unbalanced young man. He reacted to Marcus with loathing and proved too difficult for even Marie to properly control. In the first few months of his unlife, he escaped from her control several times. He Embraced his two younger sisters, even travelling to Scarborough where Anne had been moved for her protection.

Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present. Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre Wuthering Heights , and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall . Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton. The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers.

Chapters: Chapter 14 The moors were a great resource this spring; Emily and Charlotte walked out on them perpetually, "to the great damage of our shoes, but, I hope, to the benefit of our health." The old plan of school-keeping was often discussed in these rambles; but in-doors they set with vigour to shirt-making for the absent Branwell, and pondered in silence over their past and future life. At last they came to a determination. Again, at a later date, July 24th, in the same year, she writes: This was written in July;. August, September, and October passed away, and no pupils were to be heard of. Day after day, there was a little hope felt by the sisters until the post came in. But Haworth village was wild and lonely, and the Brontes but little known, owing to their want of connections. Charlotte writes on the subject, in the early winter months, to this effect: "I, Emily, and Anne, are truly obliged to you for the efforts you have made in our behalf; and if you. have not been successful, you are only like ourselves. Every one wishes us well; but there are no pupils to be had. We have no present intention, however, of breaking our hearts on the subject, still less of feeling mortified at defeat. The effort must be beneficial, whatever the result may be, because it teaches us experience, and an additional knowledge of this world. I send you two more circulars."

A drunken reprobate dying at thirty-one from the result of his own excesses? Modern eyes can judge Branwell Bronte more gently than his own despairing family. Excluded out of misguided kindness from his sister's success, in the face of the world's censure and his own shame, Branwell returned to his scribbled childhood world of wickedness and Gothic adventure -'the infernal world' where he truly belonged.

Branwell: A Novel of the Bronte Brother
By Douglas A. Martin
Reviewed by Patricia R. Payette
It’s almost impossible to read Douglas Martin’s new novel Branwell and not be reminded of Virginia Woolf’s creation of “Shakespeare’s Sister” in her 1929 book A Room of One’s Own . Woolf speculates about what might have happened if Shakespeare had had a sister with a similar literary genius to his own. Woolf plays out the imaginary details of the young woman’s tragic life—gifted with ambitions and talents for which she had no acceptable social or professional outlet, Shakespeare’s imaginary sister is tortured by her “poet’s heart…caught and tangled in a woman’s body” and takes her own life, her existence negated by a society and history shaped by men. Martin’s new novel Branwell can be viewed as both a beautifully lyrical and literary response to Woolf’s speculation. His book is a dramatization of the troubled life of Patrick Branwell Bronte, the very real brother of the very famous Bronte sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte. Martin’s book suggests that it’s not gender, education and opportunity, that absolutely determines if genius will flourish. As we see in this sensitive portrayal of Branwell’s short life in the first half of the nineteenth century, physical illness and addiction, as well as emotional, social and sexual displacement can trap the creative soul in a prison in which there is no escape except death. Patrick Branwell Bronte was born in 1817, the only son of Patrick and Maria Bronte who called him Branwell, his mother’s maiden name. Growing up in the secluded parsonage in a small Yorkshire village of Haworth, Branwell and his sisters enjoyed the unique opportunity of being privately tutored by their clergyman father in Greek, Latin, geography, literature and other traditional subjects that fueled their passion for storytelling and creative expression. Branwell and the women Brontes spent years creating the imaginary kingdoms of Gondal and Angria whose inhabitants lived lives of intrigue, romance and mysteries that were painstakingly transcribed into tiny books the children bound themselves. The dramas in these books are often linked to the novels—

Anne Bronte (1820-1849) , English author and youngest of the famed Bronte sisters wrote The Tenant of Wildfell Hall “Are you hero enough to unite yourself to one whom you know to be suspected and despised by all around you, and identify your interests and your honour with hers? Think! it is a serious thing.” “I should be proud to do it, Helen! - most happy - delighted beyond expression! - and if that be all the obstacle to our union, it is demolished, and you must - you shall be mine!” With many parallels to Anne’s own life, at times brooding and dark The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is also a story of moral courage and hope. Examining Victorian morals and values, young Helen Graham sets out with steely resolve to support herself and her son Arthur after leaving her abusive husband. Initially it was met with mixed reviews, many critical of its content and complex structure. However, it is now regarded as an exemplary feminist work. While Anne Bronte had a difficult childhood, her mother dying when she was one and her father often occupied with his clerical duties, she, like her siblings, used to advantage what she knew best and wrote about it. She was a deeply passionate and spiritual person although often presenting a stoic exterior to her sisters, much like Emily did. Anne often struggled with depression and home sickness and though she lived a short life her novels and poetry have been read, studied and admired world-wide into the 21st Century.

BIO

In 1824, the four eldest daughters were sent to Cowan Bridge School, a school for daughters of impoverished clergymen. The conditions were harsh and an epidemic soon broke out, taking the lives of Maria and Elizabeth. Charlotte becames very ill as well, and she and Emily were sent home to Haworth. About this time, Branwell, the only boy in the family, received a box of twelve wooden soldiers. The children began to write stories about them called the "Young Men" plays. In 1835, Charlotte became a teacher at Roe Head school and Emily joined her as a student. Emily, however, could not stand being away from her beloved moors, and became violently homesick. She returned home and her younger sister, Anne, took her place.

English writer of poetry, narrative prose, and juvenilia.
    INTRODUCTION
The only brother of the famed Bront« sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—Patrick Branwell Bront« has often been viewed in stark contrast to these gifted and successful writers. Having died at the age of thirty-one, Branwell is regarded as the black sheep of the family—a drunkard and opium addict whose artistic and literary talents were never realized. Although he was extremely prolific from the time of his young manhood, producing scores of pieces of prose narrative and poetry, he was published only a handful of times in local newspapers during his lifetime and is hardly considered in light of his own literary endeavors. Instead, he is more often described in terms of his influence on the remaining Bront«s. According to several scholars, Branwell's presence in the household contributed to a certain “peculiarity” in his sisters' writings. His shocking and decadent lifestyle provided fodder for the coarseness of a novel like Charlotte's Jane Eyre

(from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Fraser's Magazine , and The Edinburgh Review In the upstairs of the parsonage, a small house, was two bedrooms and a third room, scarcely bigger than a closet, in which the sisters played their games. The front door opened almost directly on to the churcyard. Inspired by a box of 12 wooden soldiers, the children wove tales and legends associated with remote Africa. With these tales the children broke the monotonous daily routines, like they later poured their joys and disappointment in their novels. Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Charlotte and Branwell recorded their stories in minute notebooks. In 1839 Anne worked for a short period as a governess to the Inghams at Blake Hall and later in same position to the Robinsons at Thorpe Green Hall near York from 1840 to 1845. Her brother Branwell joined her there as a tutor to Edmund, the only boy in the family, in 1843. He fell unfortunately in love for Mrs Robinson - or some other reason annoyed their employers - and Anne had to leave the work. Thorpe Green appeared later as Horton Lodge in her novel

The infernal world of Branwell Bronte by Daphne Du Maurier, Dame About this title: As a bold and gifted child, Branwell Bronte's promise seemed boundless to the three adoring sisters over whom his rule was complete. But as an adult, the precocious flame of genius flickered and burned low. With neither the strength nor the resources to counter rejection, unable to sell his paintings or publish his books, Branwell became a specter in the Bronte story, in pathetic contrast with the remarkable achievements of Charlotte, Anne, and Emily. Daphne du Maurier concentrates all her biographer's skill on the shadowy figure of Branwell Bronte, and no reader could fail to be intensely ... read more Note: This is a general synopsis.
