Three writers who influenced the direction of the English novel also happened to be sisters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte were all born in Thornton, England in the early 1800s. Their father Patrick was born in Ireland, educated in England, and became an Anglican clergyman. He and his wife had six children. The two oldest daughters, Maria and Elizabeth died before reaching adulthood. Of the remaining children, Charlotte was the eldest, born April 21, 1816; followed by brother Patrick Branwell, born June 26, 1817; then Emily, born July 30, 1818; and Anne, born January 17, 1820. Shortly after Anne's birth, their father accepted a position in Haworth, located within the Yorkshire moors. Mrs. Bronte died soon after reaching Haworth, and the children were cared for by an aunt named Elizabeth Branwell. In 1824, Charlotte and Emily were sent to Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire, but they returned within a year. The treatment at Cowan Bridge was considered harsh, and Charlotte later modeled Lowood School (Jane Eyre) after it. For the next several years, the Bronte children were taught at home. They invented games and told imaginary stories to each other. Charlotte attended Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head for one year in 1831, then returned home and taught her sisters. Charlotte returned to Roe Head as a teacher in 1835, but after suffering from depression and ill health, she resigned from her position. It was at Roe Head that Charlotte met her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Her many letters to Nussey have served as the best documentation of her life.

SEE THE LITERARY WORK BY BRONTE, ANNE Bronte, Anne (1820 - 1849) Anne Brontë was born in Thornton, Yorkshire. She was the youngest of six children of Patrick and Maria Brontë, and educated largely at home. After the death of her mother in 1821, and two other children, Maria and Elizabeth, Anne was left with her sisters and brother to the care of their father. Inspired by a box of 12 wooden soldiers, the children wove tales and legends associated with remote Africa. Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Charlotte and Branwell recorded their stories in minute notebooks. Anne's most effective education was at the Haworth parsonage, in which Mr. Brontë settled the year before his wife's death. In 1839, she worked for a short period as a governess to the Inghams at Blake Hall and later in same position to the Robinsons at Thorpe Green Hall near York from 1840 to 1845. Her brother Branwell joined her there as a tutor to Edmund, the only boy in the family, in 1843. He fell unfortunately in love for Mrs. Robinson - or annoyed their employers for some other reason - and Anne had to leave the position. Thorpe Green appeared later as Horton Lodge in her novel

And then, the unspeakable purity and freshness of the air! There was just enough heat to enhance the value of the breeze, and just enough wind to keep the whole sea in motion, to make the waves come bounding to the shore, foaming and sparkling, as if wild with glee.

It is foolish to wish for beauty. Sensible people never either desire it for themselves or care about it in others. If the mind be but well cultivated, and the heart well disposed, no one ever cares for the exterior.

A First Look at Agnes Grey My copy of Agnes Grey I have been working and studying with a publisher for nearly a year now, so I must speak out at the disgraceful state of the backcover copy even though it is of little consequence. Agnes Grey On reading AG itself: I had a repeat of the feelings I experienced while reading Tenant of Wildfell Hall Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle like trying Tenant that I was convinced it was superior to all but Jane Eyre and Villette until I reached the end. There is a curious hestitancy in the endings of Tenant and Agnes Grey This post is already extremely long, so I will have to keep the rest of my thoughts on the book for another time. Comments (6)

Start your day with a thought-provoking quote from the world's greatest thinkers and writers. Sign up to The Daily Muse for free. Anne Bronte youngest of the Brontë sisters, the subject matter of her work was influenced by brother Branwell, a drug and alcohol addict.
Anne, the youngest and most reserved of the Brontë sisters, was only a year old when her mother died. She was subsequently educated at home. Like her sisters, she also became a governess which was successful for her until the arrival of her brother Branwell as a tutor with the same family. Anne felt complelled to assist Branwell's effots for literary sucess but this had an unfortunate influence on her own literary progress. Her novel, The Tenent of Windfell Hall appears to be reflective of Branwell's acoholism and drug addition. This subject matter created a disturbance and was considered to unsavoury for a woman writer. Anne's novels and poems have been more favuorably reviewed in recent years.

More Information Anne Bronte has always been eclipsed by her sisters Charlotte and Emily, born in 1820 and died in 1849 far less is known about her than her 2 sisters. She also lived in a romantic fantasy world until she awoke to the real world due in no small part to her taking the position of a governess and her brothers relationship with her employers wife, this infatuation lead to his dismissal and to her resigning. Her first novel, Agnes Grey, was published as part of a 3 volume edition along with Wuthering Heights , only 300 copies were produced and they had to contribute £50 towards the cost which would be refunded should they sell 250 copies. The book made up the 3rd volume and the set is by far the rarest and most sought after of all the Bronte publications. Such was the magnitude of Wuthering Heights that Anne's work was overlooked somewhat but this did not seem to discourage her from starting work on the Tenant of Wildfell Hall . This time it was published independently in a three volume edition with Anne receiving £25 on publication and a further £25 upon sales of 250. The cost of the set was £1 11s 6d a considerable sum at the time and was well beyond the reach of the average working man. She died tragically shortly after her sister Emily aged on 29. The books of course live on, collectors are only too well aware of their scarcity and value in first issue state though there is plenty of scope for collecting early impressions and period copies.
