LIFE SUPPORTS by William Bronk
Minor change in the guest blogging schedule: today's guest blogger is Tom Ehrenfeld , business journalist, author of THE STARTUP GARDEN , and friend of mine since college. Jennifer Jordan will be tomorrow's guest, and we'll round out the week with a visit from Karen Olson . In the meantime, I'm off to California. Talk amongst yourselves.
The Book : William Bronk, LIFE SUPPORTS: New and Collected Poems
First Read:
Owned Since:
I return, and return, to "The Annihilation of Matter," a poem from the collection The World, The Worldless
...Once, it had seemed
the objects mattered: the light was to see them by.
Examined, they yielded nothing, nothing real.
They were for seeing the light in various ways.
They gathered it, released it, held it in.
In them, the light revealed itself, took shape. Objects are nothing. There is only the light, the light! Posted by AnswerGirl at 12:39 PM

Thanks, Tom! I am embarrassed to say that I have read only the William Bronk poems you've pointed me to but I do owe you for introducing me to Mary Oliver's work. And may I be among the last to wish a belated happy birthday to Lucy?

Biographical Sketch*
Highly prolific poet, translator, and prose writer Cid Corman was born in Boston in 1924. He enrolled as an undergraduate in Tufts University in 1941, graduating in 1945. He completed post-graduate work at the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Corman returned to Boston in 1948 where he made efforts to establish a "poetic community" by holding poetry events at public libraries and creating a poetry radio program on which poets read from their works. In 1950-51 Corman begain editing and publishing a little magazine called Origin which featured his own works and those of his contemporaries including Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Larry Eigner, Denise Levertov, William Bronk, Charles Olson, Louis Zukofsky, and Paul Blackburn. In 1954 Corman went to Europe on a Fulbright Grant and studied at the Sorbonne in France. He later moved to Japan where his output, in addition to his own poetry and editing work, included translations of the works of Japanese poets. Corman continued his editorship of Origin through several more series.
