Connie Briscoe My real name is Constance, but everyone has always called me "Connie." I was blessed with a wonderful upbringing. Although my immediate family is smallI have one sisterwe are very close and supportive of each other. The only thing unusual about my life was that I was born with a hearing loss, inherited from my father's side of the family. From childhood through my twenties, it was a moderate loss and I was able to attend public schools and to go on to college with few problems. When I was in my mid-twenties the loss worsened and by graduate school I needed a hearing aid. I eventually took a job at Gallaudet University and began to learn sign language. I never let my hearing loss hold me back from doing the things I wanted to do. I just adapted and plowed on. A couple of years ago, I had a cochlear implant and most of my hearing has been restored. I'm now doing things I hadn't done in years, like going to the movies, enjoying music and using the telephone. It really is a miracle.

"I Never Thought My Book Would Take off!"
Connie Briscoe is the author of two best-selling novels: Sisters and Lovers and Big Girls Don't Cry . Briscoe, who is deaf, is also the former managing editor of American Annals of the Deaf WAY: Did you expect your first novel to be a best seller?
Briscoe: Not at all! I never thought it would take off the way it did and that I would be able to leave my job. WAY: Who are your role models?
Briscoe: My parents. I could do whatever I wanted, no matter what it was. WAY: Where did you grow up
Briscoe: I grew up in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. I had a typical black middle-class upbringing. My family believed getting an education was important. WAY: Where did you go to school?
Briscoe: I went to Hampton University. WAY: Did you have an interpreter in college? Briscoe: No. Also, I did not even wear a hearing aid... Hampton being a rather small school, the classrooms were small...so it was not a problem. WAY: How long have you been hearing impaired?
Briscoe: I grew up with mild hearing loss. I lost most of my hearing in my twenties. I wear a hearing aid now.

    Connie Briscoe's Hearing Loss
Q : You lost your hearing in your 20s due to sudden hearing loss. Can you describe that experience? A : I didn't understand why I was losing my hearing. To go from having a sense to not having it or having it deteriorate quickly, is frightening. Suddenly I could no longer communicate with my friends and family with the same ease I could before. I used to love talking to my girlfriends and boyfriends on the telephone and lost the ability to do that. Fortunately, I read lips well and was able to compensate when talking in person. But I lost the ability to do a lot of things that I took for granted like movies and television (this was before closed captions became common).

    Another Deaf Author DiscoveredConnie Briscoe
A couple of weeks ago, during a search for authors who are deaf or hard of hearing, I stumbled upon Connie Briscoe. In the mid 1990's, Connie rocketed to the bestseller list with her first novel, Sisters and Lovers . Connie is deaf and the former editor of the American Annals of the Deaf
You can read more about Connie in a Gallaudet interview and in Jamie Burke's interview.
Connie's newest book is Jewels , a collection of fifty stories about African American women over the age of fifty. Connie includes her own personal story in this book. I plan to order this photographic book using the gift certificates that I've earned from My Points Earn Rewards at MyPoints.
Yesterday, I headed over the library and found two of her books: P. G. County and Can't Get Enough
I'm on chapter three of P.G. County and fascinated by the way Connie introduces characters. I have a feeling I'm going to like her books. On page seven, they've already gotten into some hot, steamy action.
    I'm off to read more.

New York Times bestselling author Connie Briscoe has hearing restored with cochlear implant
Bestselling fiction author Connie Briscoe became profoundly deaf at age 30. Two years ago, she had cochlear implant surgery and most of her hearing was restored. This spring and summer she travels across the country for the first time without an interpreter as she promotes her fifth novel, "Can't Get Enough." Bestselling fiction author Connie Briscoe was born with a mild hearing loss inherited from her father's side of the family. But at about age 30 her hearing suddenly began dropping rapidly and within months she was profoundly deaf. Two summers ago, she had cochlear implant surgery at The Listening Center at Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center and most of her hearing has been restored. Briscoe says that for the first time in more than 20 years, she is able to use the telephone again, go to the movie theater and enjoy music. "The last movie I remember seeing in the theater before losing my hearing was The Color Purple. But I missed hearing most of it and I knew while watching it that this would probably be my last visit to a movie theater. In some ways it feels like I've been sleeping for the past 20 years and suddenly woke up, especially with all the new technology in telephones and all the gadgets for listening to music. It's an exciting time for me." A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that restores hearing to people who have severe to profound hearing loss. The device is surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear, and it bypasses damaged hair cells in the inner ear, or cochlear, to stimulate the hearing nerve directly.
