    David Brin on Evaluating Horizons
David Brin , author of The Transparent Society , is joking about how a astronomer/physicist transforms to a sci-fi author to being a pundit for openness. His talk is about What Limits Our Ability To Cope WIth Accelerating Change There are two ways to look at the future and the past. And in almost every civilization, " the golden age " of the past is often romanticized - everything was great until we fell from a state of grace. Perhaps from hubris and trying to appropriate the gods' power.

David Brin's Uplift Universe What is the Uplift Universe? Why don't we look for its reference in the glossary sections that appear in all of Brin's Uplift books? Uplift: The process by which older spacefaring races bring new species into Galactic culture, through breeding and genetic engineering. The resulting client species serves its patron for a period of indenture to pay for this favour. Through this central theme of his Uplift Universe, and dozens of other rich details, Brin has managed to create one of the most 'realistic' and engrossing series of science fiction books ever written. And that's not just me saying it - Brin has won the Hugo and Nebula awards for science fiction. That alone is a good enough stamp of approval. And of course, David Brin is a top bloke himself. After I was pronounced 'Major General Hon' by the Brinster, he also agreed to donate a few books to a competition I'm organising. The book covers The Uplift books display book covers of an excellent quality. While sometimes I get the feeling they don't

    Static Society Meets the Stars
Glory Season by David Brin is an interesting novel about a static society. The protagonist is, as many science fiction (SF) protagonists are, a cast out in a world that, like many SF worlds, blends agrarianism and high technology in a culture that, like many SF cultures, is reminiscent of our own in exagerated form. Dr. Brin creates a society, a people, and a culture I believe could've remained stable for 150 generations. The thought of a society where all men are second class citizens does not endear me, but is interesting to explore nonetheless. The idea of women being able to clone themselves , and the effect of natural cloning on a people's development, is original and startling. More than anything else of Dr. Brin's, this novel reminds me of something

This novel is my first uplift experience. It's an interesting take on how humans, and other sapients of course, got to where they are. I wonder if we'll ever see the uplift books in a museum dedicated to intelligent design?
As I got closer to the end I realized I wasn't going to find a conclusion in this book. Duh! What did I think trilogy meant? I have the other two books in the trilogy ordered now and they're in my to-read queue. Highly recommended. Posted by popnowlin at 7:15 PM

C onsider the ages from twelve to fifteen, when a person's sense of wonder can bloom or else wither, starved by ennui or seared by fashionable cynicism. Often it's some small thing that can make a difference. An inspiring teacher or role model. A team effort or memorable adventure. Sometimes even the right book or film can ignite a fire that lasts a lifetime you never know. For many of us, it was futuristic or speculative literature that helped cast our minds far beyond family, city, or oppressive peers... not to mention the limitations that others seemed bent on imposing, shackling our dreams. Whether in stories that spanned outer space, or adventures in cyberspace, or thoughtful ruminations about the mental life of dolphins, we discovered that the universe is larger than the local Mall. Both more dangerous and more filled with possibilities. Once the sole province of nerdy young men, science fiction has become a central pert of our culture's myth making engine, now engaging girls, women, and adults of all ages. Yet the breadth of SF and its ultimate importance can be difficult for a non-aficionado to grasp. After all, isn't it all just spaceships, lasers and all that childish stuff? Well, no it isn't. As with any branch of human storytelling, science fiction has a spectrum of quality and depth, ranging from shallow Star Wars romps to the dark, serious explorations of George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Mary Shelley. A key element is fascination with change and how human beings respond when challenged by it. In other words, there is no genre more relevant to this rapidly transforming world we live in, where citizens are called upon to contemplate issues that would have boggled their grandparents. Environmental degradation, the extinction and creation of new species, cloning, artificial intelligence, instant access to all archived knowledge and the looming prospect a generation - perhaps the very next one - that may have to wrestle with the implications of physical immortality.

    David Brin
Glen David Brin is a well known American author of science fiction. He is the winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. He lives in Southern California and has been both a NASA consultant and a physics professor. Science Fiction authors are often best-known for their keynote "universe" stories and novels, that share a common projected future history. Although they make up a minority of David Brin's works, his Uplift series has won a large core following in the SF community, twice winning the international Science Fiction Achievement Award (Hugo Award) in the Best Novel category. Consisting of two trilogies that include SUNDIVER, STARTIDE RISING and THE UPLIFT WAR, this future history depicts a huge galactic civilization responsible for "uplifting" all known intelligent forms of oxygen breathing life. In these novels humanity is an anomaly since there is no known "patron" species responsible for their uplift from animal pre-sapience though, ironically, they independently have done the uplift "favor" already to dolphins and chimpanzees. As relatively un-educated upstarts humans therefore have limited understanding and appreciation of the subtleties of galactic culture.
