"When I was I child, I decided to be an illustrator. I spent many hours reading and drawing. I remember the special quiet of rainy days, when I felt that I could enter the pages of beautiful picture books. Now I try to re-create that feeling of believing that the imaginary place I'm drawing really exists. The detail in my work helps to convince me, and I hope others as well, that such places might be real.
As a student at the Museum School in Boston, I spent hours in the Museum of Fine Arts. It was overwhelming to see room-size landscapes and towering stone sculptures, and then moments later to refocus on delicately embroidered kimonos and ancient porcelain. I'm delighted and surprised when fragments of these beautiful images come back to me in my painting.
Illustrating children's books always seems like a big adventure because as an artist I must explore and give thought to my subject ? an artist needs to know everything about their subject. I try to get a feel for the country and times my characters live in, and I get many ideas from traveling to different countries, where I research the architecture and costumes that appear in my work. After a trip to Norway, I was inspired to write three books! I've found that the details and the odd little things one notices help make a story convincing. In my mind, the story comes alive. And for me, the best part about telling a story is drawing the pictures."

JAN BRETT PROGRAM
An initial sign up of 17 participants yielded a group of 11 who braved the cold weather (and a November snow, not to mention the Ohio State vs. Michigan game) to attend the Jan Brett program held November 23, 2002 in the Community Room of the Bucyrus Public Library. As they arrived, each participant received a nametag in the shape of a gingerbread man. These were done with an Ellison die with brown construction paper.
She also shared a Powerpoint presentation of selected Jan Brett titles, which also included a brief biography of the author. The participants were familiar with many of the books mentioned.
Participants were then invited to make-and-take six different crafts based on Jan Brett books. These crafts were:
Then it was time for refreshments! Participants enjoyed fudge-striped cookies, pretzels, and punch. The refreshment table itself was decorated with a large gingerbread man soft sculpture (a find on eBay!), as well as a couple of Jan Brett books and other items that would remind readers of her stories, such as a single mitten. A basket filled with cinnamon scented pine cones gave the room a wonderful smell!
Before they left, each participant received a bag of candy, a gingerbread man pencil, and two sheets of gingerbread man stickers. The pencils and stickers were purchased from Oriental Trading Company.

Masks by Jan Brett
Halloween Site of the Day Special: The Parenting Special Needs Site of the Day has been taken over by goblins and, throughout the month of October, will feature a daily site offering Halloween help and happiness to kids with special needs. Stuck without a costume for your child at the last minute? The Web site of children's author Jan Brett has some beautiful animal masks to print out and wear. Your child can choose from critters featured in Brett books The Umbrella, The Gingerbread Baby, The Hat, The Mitten, and Town Mouse Country Mouse. Rather than punching holes in the sides and tying the mask around your child's face, try gluing the mask to a piece of stiff paper like the side of a file folder, cutting it out, and taping it to a ruler or long stick. Letting your child put the mask in front of his face when he says "trick or treat" but not when he's walking from door to door may make for a more comfortable, less sensory-assaulting experience. comments (0) Email to a Friend ...
