Even in a democracy it is necessary to have individuals capable of drawing the attention of the citizenry to their own acheivements. An interesting historical note to the Gettysburg Address: it was actually a short introduction to the keynote speech, given by someone else. Lincoln's eloquence eclipsed what was going to be the major event of the day. I would call the Address a good foil for this Brecht poem. What Brecht does so heavy handedly and (imo) uninterestingly, Lincoln does with consummate skill and loveliness. General Bio Epic Theatre Influence ... Works b. Feb. 10, 1898, Augsburg
d. Aug. 14, 1956, East Berlin original name EUGEN BERTHOLD FRIEDRICH BRECHT, German poet, playwright, and theatrical reformer whose epic theatre departed from the conventions of theatrical illusion and developed the drama as a social and ideological forum for leftist causes. Brecht was, first, a superior poet, with a command of many styles and moods. As a playwright he was an intensive worker, a restless piecer-together of ideas not always his own ( The Threepenny Opera is based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera, and Edward II on Marlowe), a sardonic humorist, and a man of rare musical and visual awareness; but he was often bad at creating living characters or at giving his plays tension and shape. As a producer he liked lightness, clarity, and firmly knotted narrative sequence; a perfectionist, he forced the German theatre, against its nature, to underplay. As a theoretician he made principles out of his preferencesand even out of his faults.

BERTOLT BRECHT (1898-1956) one of the most prominent figures in the 20th-century theatre, Bertolt Brecht (Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht) was born in Augsburg, Bavaria on February 10, 1898. He drifted towards the literary arts at an early age, writing poetry as a boy and even had a few poems published in 1914. He was an indifferent student, however, and was very nearly expelled from Augsburg Grammar School for taking a dismissive, anti-patriotic tone when given an assignment to write an essay with the title "It is a sweet and honourable thing to die for one's country." In 1917 Brecht enrolled as a medical student at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where he would attend Arthur Kutscher's theatre seminar. Although Kutscher had a reputation as something of a theatrical guru, Brecht was unimpressed. He went so far as to harshly criticize one of the instructor's favorite plays, Hanns Johst's The Lonely One , a biographical drama about the life of nineteenth century dramatist C.D. Grabbe. The impetuous young Brecht suggested that he himself could write a better play on the same subject. The result was Brecht's first play, Baal , an effort that Kutscher considered vile and nauseating.

Bertolt Brecht and the THE EPIC THEATER (1)
To read this material in German, click here: Das Epische Theater NOTE: The term Epic Theater , used by Brecht for the first time in 1926, did not originate with him, although it is generally applied to his work today. It was already in the air in 1924 when Brecht moved from Munich to Berlin and was first used in connection with revolutionary experiments by director Erwin Piscator . Many playwrights and composers produced plays and musical compositions in the 1920s which have been since been labeled epic (Stravinisky, Pirandello, Claudel), and others have followed in their footsteps (Wilder, Miller, Becket). This is what Bertolt Brecht wrote about his concept of the Epic Theater . . . This is no place to explain how the opposition of epic and dramatic lost its rigidity after having long been held to be irreconcilable. Let us just point out that the technical advances alone were enough to permit the stage to incorporate an element of narrative in its dramatic productions. The possibility of projections, the greater adaptability of the stage due to mechanization, the film, all completed the theater's equipment, and did so at a point where the most important transactions between people could no longer be shown simply by personifying the motive forces or subjecting the characters to invisible metaphysical powers.
To make these transactions intelligible, the environment in which the people lived had to be brought to bear in a big and "significant" way. This environment had of course been shown in the existing drama, but only as seen from the central figure's point of view, and not as an independent element. It was defined by the hero's reactions to it. .

Bertolt Brecht in LA
This article was written by Annette Aryanpour Bertolt Brecht I would have never guessed fifteen years ago when I was introduced to his plays, that one day Bertolt Brecht and I would share the Hollywood experience. Of course, there are a few minor details that separate us, such as fame and the urgency that propelled him into this kind of life. But let's just say ... I can relate. For the German playwright of The Threepenny Opera the aphorism 'it's a small world' never rang truer. Brecht's socio-critical and highly satirical writings made him a favorite enemy of the National Socialists in pre-war Germany. In 1933 he was forced out of the country by the Nazi government. A detour via Paris led him to Denmark. Little did he know that this was only the beginning of his odyssey. Like the pestilence, the Nazis roared their ugly heads wherever Brecht decided to go. His travels took him to the Soviet Union and even Mali, but there seemed no end to the Nazi expansion. Last, but not least, Brecht arrived in the US in 1941. With the help of his good friend and fellow exile writer Lion Feuchtwanger, he settled in Los Angeles. Advertisement:
