Talon Books, 1999 Review by Michael Bryson The title of Ottawa-based poet rob mclennan's third book of poetry of 1999 (he also published bury me deep in the green wood (ECW) and Manitoba highway map (Broken Jaw)) begs the question - what is The Richard Brautigan Ahhhhhhhhhhh (11 a's!)? Nowhere in the book is the title explained. Nor does the book include a note on Brautigan's identity - though that can be found in a note in the back of bury me deep (which includes a sequence of poems about the U.S. poet). The note in bury me deep calls Brautigan "the last of the beat poets out of San Francisco in the late 60's." The title is obviously a homage to Brautigan - who died by his own hand in 1984 - one mclennan surely means readers to research further themselves. Meanwhile, we have mclennan "pushing and expanding his line forward" (as the back cover note proclaims), which is probably as concise a definition of mclennan's poetic project as there is ever likely to exist. The poems in Ahhhhhhhhhhh seem to go two directions at once. On the one hand, the free verse poems echo the joy, skepticism and eternal searching quality (for transcendence?) of the best of the Beat project. That is, many of the poems speak with a consistent narrative voice, which is often located in specific places (bars, street corners) - and which is also moving through time with bemused curiosity, lightness and grace.

Reality is a poor excuse not to enjoy the work of Richard Brautigan. It is also the best excuse. Either way, I recommend you set reality aside; let it rest awhile; if you find you need it later, chances are it will still be there. If it isn’t, well, as they say, good riddance.
Brautigan’s gentle vision, melancholy humor, and ear for language are all beautifully evident in his short impressionistic novel, In Watermelon Sugar . The story begins simply and in earnest:
In watermelon sugar the deeds were done and done again as my life is done in watermelon sugar. I’ll tell you about it because I am here and you are distant.
Wherever you are, we must do the best we can. It is so far to travel, and we have nothing here to travel, except watermelon sugar. I hope this works out.
And work out it does. Effortlessly, Brautigan builds a bridge composed of dry timber and sad, sweet images, and places them beneath a colored sky and sun in a comfortable living room as big as one’s imagination will allow. One end of the bridge is at the reader’s feet. The other is in a small community of peaceful souls once shared by mournful tigers, which ate people with regret, sang, apologized in English, and offered to help the narrator with his arithmetic even as he was being orphaned. The narrator, now an adult, holds nothing against the tigers — and, indeed, nothing against anyone. Life is simply the thing it is. Not everything can be explained, nor does it need to be:

[000776] Brautigan, Richard. An Unfortunate Woman: A Journey. New York: St. Martin's Press, 2000. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Fine / Fine. From the dustjacket: "Richard Brautigan was an original-brilliant and wickedly funny-and his books resonated with the sixties, making him an overnight counterculture hero. Taken in its entirety, his body of work reveals an artistry that outreaches the literary fads that so quickly swept him up. Dark, humorous, and exquisitely haunting, his final book of fiction explores the fragile, mysterious shadowland surrounding death. Told with classic Brautigan wit, poetic style and mordant irony, An Unfortunate Woman assumes the form of a traveler's journal, chronicling the protagonist's journey and his oblique ruminations on the suicide of one woman and the death from cancer of another, a close friend." This is a new, unread copy, fine in a fine dustjacket. 110 pages. $14.95

Happy Birthday, Richard Brautigan
Today is the birthday of Richard Brautigan , a Beat writer who had a huge influence on me when I first read his works in high school. That was during the 70's, and I was fortunate enough to have hippie English teachers who introduced me to Brautigan as well as to Kurt Vonnegut and, of course, J. D. Salinger. To a teenager growing up in a very fundamentalist culture, reading Brautigan was a liberation. He was my introduction to

Thinking About Richard Brautigan
At the time of his suicide (he was 49-years-old) Brautigan was very far away from many things—after the success of his first novel, Trout Fishing in America (it sold 2 million copies), his later novels attracted little to no public or critical attention, and the last book published whilst he was alive, And So the Wind Won’t Blow it All Away , sold just 15, 000 copies. Brautigan was also very far away from the hippie-milieu he was said to have led, at least literarily—he chastised the hippie-movement, and probably critics’ habit of including him as their chief.
His Beat badge also seemed redundant—the echoes he shared with Ginsberg and co. were light and superficial—a raffish life and rhapsodic prose, but he was very far from the experiments with acid and jazz and self and seemed content drinking strong liquor and living in the country. He was a romantic solipsist shooting at the moon, and he and his writing never appeared to grow up. What Brautigan was is difficult to pin down, but very certainly he was an odd cousin to Kafka’s torture—the narrator/writer thwarted by the violent caprices of an absurd and unsympathetic world. In response, Brautigan attempted to anchor in childhood, populating his stories with the lush vibrancy of innocence, though his books are granted a menace by the understanding that the innocence is forever under threat.
