Executive summary: Ship of Fools German humanist and satirist, born at Strassburg about the year 1457. He studied at Basel, took the degree of doctor of laws in 1489, and for some time held a professorship of jurisprudence there. Returning to Strassburg, he was made syndic of the town, and died on the 10th of May 1521. He first attracted attention in humanistic circles by his Latin poetry, and edited many ecclesiastical and legal works; but he is now only known by his famous satire, Das Narrenschiff (1494), a work the popularity and influence of which were not limited to Germany. Under the form of an allegory a ship laden with fools and steered by fools to the fools' paradise of Narragonia Brant here lashes with unsparing vigor the weaknesses and vices of his time. Although, like most of the German humanists, essentially conservative in his religious views, Brant's eyes were open to the abuses in the church, and the Narrenschiff was a most effective preparation for the Protestant Reformation. Alexander Barclay's

Sebastian Brant
Brant Sebastian (1458-1521) German satirical poet and humanist. His Ship of Fools (1494), a bitter satire on follies and vices of his time, tells how a ship loaded with fools sails to fool's paradise, Narragonia.
See: Bosch The Ship of Fools is evidently based on the poem. The picture shows two nuns and a monk passing merry time while sailing to Heaven in a company of peasants in a strange boat, which has a May tree (which symbolizes spring folk festivals, a time of moral license for folk and clergy alike) as a mast; banner with a Muslim crescent instead of Christian cross and many other humorous details.

January 2006 - Sebastian Brant. Ship of Fools Image from 1570 English edition: Stultifera navis ... The ship of fooles, wherein is shewed the folly of all states, with diuers other workes adioyned unto the same ... Translated out of Latin ... by Alexander Barclay .... EUL, Special Collections, Df.4.20. Sebastian Brant, German Humanist and poet, was born in Strasburg, in 1457 or 1458, dying there in 1521. He attended the University of Basle where he first studied philosophy later opting for the study of law. In 1489 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Canon and Civil Law. While lecturing at the University from 1484 Brant wrote a number of poems in Latin and German in which he set forth his religious and political ideals. As with many of his other countrymen Brant was filled with hope at the election of Maximilian I, the German King who became Holy Roman Emperor in 1491. Brant was eventually disappointed in 1499 Basle was separated from the empire and became a member of the Swiss confederacy. Brant's position in Basle now became untenable, he returned to Strasbourg where he worked for the city for the remainder of his life. Towards the major religious movement of the time, the Reformation, he maintained an attitude of indifference. Title page from 1497 edition (Stultifera Navis).

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Sebastian Brant (1458?-1521), German poet and humanist, who achieved fame through his satirical poem Das Narrenschiff (The Ship of Fools, 1494). Born in Strasbourg (now in France), he studied at the University of Basel, taught and practiced law there, and then returned to Strasbourg, where he became town clerk in the early years of the 16th century. Das Narrenschiff, one of the most remarkable and popular books of the time, tells of a shipload of people looking for a fools' paradise. They all die because of their errant behavior. Each character represents a vice or folly of Brant's time. The poem has undergone many translations and versions and formed the basis for Ship of Fools (1962), a novel by American writer Katherine Anne Porter.
