William Cowper Brann
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search William Cowper Brann January 4 April 1 ) was an American journalist known as Brann the Iconoclast William Cowper Brann Born in Humboldt Illinois , Brann was a highly opinionated, colorful writer, known for the articulate savagery of his writing style. At the time of his death, Brann edited the Iconoclast newspaper in Waco Texas He was especially noted for his writings attacking Baptists, Episcopalians, the British, and blacks. He devoted many paragraphs to his hatred of the wealthy eastern social elites, such as the Vanderbilts, and deplored their marriages to titled Europeans, which he characterized as diluting their already debased American stock with worthless foreign blood. One of his targets was Baylor University , the prominent Baptist institution in Waco. Brann revealed that Baylor officials had been importing South American children recruited by missionaries and making house-servants out of them. He also stated that the male faculty members were having sexual relations with female students, and a father sending his daughter to Baylor was risking her rape. Brann was shot in the back by Tom Davis, a Baylor supporter. Brann wheeled, drew his pistol, and killed Davis. Brann was helped home by his friends, where he died soon after. W. C. Brann
William Cowper Brann was a much read journalist of the era when America was beginning to take itself much too seriously and writers were quick to point out the error of their ways. Twain, OHenry, Brann, Draper and others tweaked the public and especially public "servants", the clergy and other pompous asses of the day. Following in their well placed footprints was H.L. Mencken. Brann was a husband, father, writer and businessman. He also could lay claim to having experience as a bellboy, printer, professional baseball pitcher, opera company manager, playright, journalist and newspaper reporter. Yet, he was uneducated. He also must be acknowledged as a good shot, killing an opponent in a gun fight that some describe as a duel. This is untrue. Brann was shot in the back, turned and faced his assailant and shot and killed him. He most surely have would have said, in the words of the giffer, "honey, I forgot to duck". He made his mark on literature in the Iconoclast , a monthly of wide distribution prior to his death. Some 90,000 subscribers were said to have followed his caustic journalistic style as he took on politics, religion, civil servants, society in general and whatever moved him at the moment. It is sad to say that the best that could be said by reviewers of his work archived at the University of Texas was "3 Boxes, 1 Linear Foot". Brann was much more that this, one need only to read from the collection of his writings to recognize Brann as one of America's true Iconoclast, much better than Menchen could have ever hoped to be.

REMEMBERING BRANN
THE GREAT ICONOCLAST
William R. Carr Unless you happen to be from north of Springfield, it may be stretching it somewhat to consider Coles County part of southern Illinois, but I’m willing to stretch things at least that far if it means claiming Coles County native William Cowper Brann as one of our own. Not everyone will join me in the desire to do this, of course. Many will not appreciate Brann as I do, for Brann’s wit was often as abrasive as his language was colorful. But his undeniable genius commands both my respect and admiration—even forgiveness. Yes, forgiveness—for Brann apparently shared what he called a popularly held view of the state of civilization in southern Illinois. Early Springhouse readers may recall the article titled "Egypt vs. Arkansas" in the Mar/Apr 1984 issue. The article had been an editorial of the type that had made Brann famous throughout the nation. In that article, Brann recounts the war of words between the editor of "the journalistic Jehovah known as the

This essay contains material that may be offensive and should be viewed in its historical context. William Cowper Brann "THE BUCK NEGRO" from The Works of Brann the Iconoclast (New York: Brann Publishers, 1898), vol. 2 I once severely shocked the pseudo-philanthropists by suggesting that if the South is ever to rid herself of the negro rape-fiend she must take a day off and kill every member of the accursed race that declines to leave the country. I am not wedded to my plan; but, like the Populists, I do insist that those who object to it are in duty bound to offer something better. We have tried the restraining influence of religion and the elevating forces of education upon the negro without avail. We have employed moral suasion and legal penalties; have incarcerated the offenders for life at hard labor, and hanged them by the neck in accordance with statutory law. We have hunted the black rape-fiend to death with hounds, bored him with buckshot; fricasseed him over slow fires and flayed him alive; but the despoilment of white women by these brutal imps of darkness and the devil is still of daily occurrence. The baleful shadow of the black man hangs over every Southern home like the sword of Damocles, like the blight of death - an avatar of infamy, a decree of damnation. There is not to-day in all this land of Christ an aged mother who is safe one single hour unless guarded by watchful sons, a wife who may rest secure beyond the reach

The first position he obtained was that of bell boy in a hotel. Later on he learned to be a painter and grainer, then a printer, a reporter, and finally an editorial writer. He was energetic, industrious and painstaking in whatever he undertook to do, therefore always employed. Early in his struggle he realized the need of an education, in the acquirement of which he applied himself with eager diligence. Nature had endowed him with keen perceptive powers, a retentive memory and great mental vigor, by means of which he soon accumulated considerable knowledge. Every moment that could be spared from his daily toil was spent in reading books of science, philosophy, history, biography and general literature. In this way he became thoroughly informed on almost every important subject, as will be seen by the contents of his writings. On March 3, 1877, at Rochelle, Illinois, he was married to Miss Carrie Martin, who, with their two children, Grace Gertrude and William Carlyle is now living in the beautiful home, here at Waco, from which he was buried April 3, 1898. During all the years, from the time he left the hospitable home of Mr. Hawkins, in 1868, until after he had successfully launched "Brann's ICONOCLAST," he suffered the harassing annoyances of extreme poverty, in the endurance of which he was cheerful, hopeful and diligent in the equipment of his mind preparatory to the work he always believed he would some day be able to accomplish.

BRANN, WILLIAM COWPER (1855-1898). William Cowper Brann, journalist, was born on January 4, 1855, in Coles County, Illinois, the son of Noble J. Brann, a Presbyterian minister. After his mother's death in 1857, he was placed in the care of a neighboring farm couple, William and Mary Hawkins. In 1868, when he was thirteen and in the third grade at school, he slipped away one night, with his few belongings in a small carton he could carry. He never returned, nor did he receive any further formal schooling. He worked as a hotel bellboy, then as a house painter's helper, and finally as a printer's devil and cub reporter. On March 3, 1877, he married Carrie Belle Martin at Rochelle, Illinois. They had two daughters and a son. In Houston in 1890 his daughter Inez took her own life, an event for which Brann blamed himself. He moved from St. Louis to Galveston to Houston and then to San Antonio and gained a reputation as a brilliant though vitriolic editorialist. He worked for the St. Louis Globe Democrat from 1883 to 1886, then for the Galveston
