The ability to make history concrete by capturing the small, ordinary things of life along with a sense of broader historical actions is not found too frequently in English poetry, particularly in North America. Dionne Brand, however, is a significant exception. To read her poetry is to read not only about her but also about her people and their struggles both in Canada and the Caribbean. In the introduction to her poetry published in A Caribbean Dozen, a collection of poetry for children, Dionne Brand illustrates both her biographical and literary background, pinpointing the essence of her desire to write: Being an Afro-Caribbean Canadian poet and writer, Dionne Brand is a particular kind of exiled woman who has made a strength out of her experience of multiple displacements. Of African descent, her cultural and linguistic history has been truncated by the forcible displacement of her ancestors from Africa to the New World. Her life in the Caribbean has been affected coined by the unavoidable impact of colonialism, namely the linguistic and cultural displacements which she often deals with in her poetry. In Canada, despite encountering racism and rejection, she has emerged as a multicultural and multifaceted poet and writer who has left a indelible imprint on the cultural mosaic of Canada.

      REVIEWS:
Praise for What We All Long For
      Praise for thirsty
“Brand's voice never falters in thirsty, a long narrative poem. She tantalizes us with her vision of a geographical space, its marginal, integral citizens, who dream of a sustaining past ("She is elsewhere, by a river, the Rio Cobre, pitching stones") and expire in a present that is too awful to behold: Her stunning facility with the lyric is in full effect.” (Lynn Crosbie, The Globe & Mail)
Praise for At the Full And Change of the Moon
“[F]ascinating, sad and sometimes horrific... told in a densely rhythmic and haunting style that is also full of heartbreak and longing for things beyond the characters’ grasp.” (Los Angeles Times); “This is a delicately structured, beautifully written novel, infused with rare emotional clarity.” (Independent, London); “Dionne Brand... has a way of kneading language into shape, creating a prose style which is effortlessly musical and wholly original.” (The Times, London); "Brand has two gifts that are incendiary in combination: a concise and intelligent grasp of the subtleties of emotion and an apparently effortless facility with language. The result is an extraordinary ability to capture the flicker of experience." (The Globe and Mail).
Praise for In Another Place, Not Here

Winner! What We All Long For
    by Dionne Brand
    Alfred A. Knopf Canada
What We All Long For tells the story a circle of second-generation twenty-somethings living in downtown Toronto. There's Tuyen, a lesbian avant-garde artist and the daughter of Vietnamese parents who've never recovered from losing one of their children in the crush to board a boat out of Vietnam in the 1970s. She's in love with her best friend Carla, a biracial bicycle courier. Oku is a jazz-loving poet who, unbeknownst to his Jamaican-born parents, has dropped out of university; he's in love with Jackie, a gorgeous black woman who runs a hip clothing shop on Queen West and dates only white men. The four characters try to make a life for themselves in the city, supporting one another through their struggles. Quy is the fifth main character, the child who Tuyen's parents lost in Vietnam. After many years, he has finally made his way to Toronto and will soon be reunited with his family - whether to love them or hurt them, it's not clear. What We All Long For is a gripping and, at times, heart-rending story about identity, longing and loss in a cosmopolitan city.

Brand conveys her politics in her poetry, essays, and films, as well as through her community activism. Primitive Offensive and Winter Epigrams and Epigrams to Ernesto Cardenal in Defense of Claudia are her first two books of poetry that deal explicitly with political issues. They especially address colonial oppression and imperialism. Her subsequently published book, Chronicles of the Hostile Sun, is a reaction to the U.S. invasion of Grenada. In her writing, Brand also shares her theories about what it means to identify oneself as "multicultural" and her own experiences as a Canadian immigrant and as a lesbian. Brand situates her writing internationally, in the context of literature by other racial minority authors. In commenting on her influences, she has said, "What some white reviewers lack is the sense of what literature that is made by Black people and other people of colour is about. If you read my work, you have to read
