MELVYN BRAGG U.S. Situation Comedy Melvyn Bragg has become the most articulate spokesman for the Arts on Independent Television (ITV) in Britain. As presenter and editor of The South Bank Show since 1978 and Head of Arts for London Weekend Television from 1982 to 1990 (since 1990 Controller of Arts) Bragg has attained the same fame as an Arts expert for ITV that Huw Wheldon enjoyed in the 1960s for the BBC tv arts program Monitor in the 1960s. Both Wheldon and Bragg became senior management administrators because of their successful role as Arts presenters and both became articulate authors who wrote extensively about the directions in which television should develop. Bragg was a working class boy who went to Wadham College Oxford. After Oxford he joined the BBC as a radio and later television producer, but he never forgot his origins, and viewers shared with him his genuine delight in new artistic discovery. At the BBC he worked for the Monitor program under Huw Wheldon, and became widely respected for his arts reporting. In 1967 Bragg became a freelance writer and broadcaster, working as producer and editor of New Release and Writers' World , and later presenting the BBC series 2nd House and

Alongside his work in broadcasting, Melvyn Bragg has sustained a parallel career as a writer. He is the author of several screenplays and more than a dozen novels: the first, For Want of a Nail, was published in 1965, and the latest, The Soldier's Return, recently won the W H Smith Literary Award for 2000. To watch coverage of the forum, select the link below: Melvyn Bragg is set to release his new novel, A Son of War, which is the sequel to the award-winning The Soldier's Return.
The book is set in post-war Britain. It chronicles the life of Joe and his parents, Sam and Ellen. Sam has returned from war and finds he is discontent and restless with his new life. But it's through the eyes of Joe, a seven-year-old boy we catch a glimpse of the hedonism and exhilaration of youth. Yet writing is only a small part of Bragg's talents. Renowned for LWT's South Bank Show which he started in 1978. He presented the BBC's Start The Week for 10 years, until 1998 and became a Labour peer (Lord Bragg of Wigton) in the same year. He now writes and presents In Our Time for BBC Radio 4. Of all his achievements, which is he most proud? Does he think the House of Lords should be abolished?

  • Bragg, Melvyn 1939–
Bragg is a British novelist, screenwriter, essayist, broadcaster, and producer. His film credits include the screenplays for Isadora and Jesus Christ Superstar . (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 57-60.) Once again Melvyn Bragg has written a novel about rural life in Cumberland [ The Hired Man ], and once again it is earnest, worthy and sometimes a struggle to read. Melvyn Bragg is a good novelist but his narrative is clogged by heavy phrasing, especially when trying to report the self-communication of his characters. When he tells what they said, what they did, how they and their environment appear to the author, he is consistently successful. This novel is largely concerned with the changing attitudes among working men during this century towards being 'hired'—or employed, exploited, used. John's grandfather had 'worked as if he was made for nothing else in the world: he called by "sir" and "master" those "set above" him'. The movement of [John's brother] Seth and, later, John into the pits involves them in corporate action against those set above. But there is another life-style hanging over from older times, that of the third brother Isaac, who lives for sport, like a free man—changing his job frequently, leaving his wife for weeks on end, dealing with horses, dogs, fighting-cocks, boxing and gambling….
