Vita: Anne Bradstreet
Brief life of a pioneer poet: 1612-1672
by Charlotte Gordon
Bradstreet was only 18 when she arrived in Salem harbor in 1630 on the Arbella Her impatient father, meanwhile, pressed to expand the colony. During her second pregnancy, her family hiked through pine forests to build new homes in a tiny outpost named Ipswich. Twelve years later, she and Simon and their children helped found Andover, a settlement even more remote. Rather than complain, Bradstreet seems to have been inspired by the challenges of the wilderness. She began to write poetry that explored important subjects of the day as well as private matters, such as her sadness when her husband was away on colony business. Anne Bradstreet biography
Anne Bradstreet was the first poet of the New World.
Anne Bradstreet was born in Norhampton, England in the year 1612, it is believed. She was born Anne Dudley, one of five children born to Thomas Dudley and Dorothy Yorke. Anne was next to the eldest child born. Anne did not have a formal education, but was taught many things because an education was important to the Dudley family. She learned by reading and studying such things as the bible, the encyclopedia, poetry, keeping a journal and more. When she was 18 years old, in the year 1628, she married Simon Bradstreet. Even though the marriage may have been arranged by her father, it was full of love, as you can tell by reading her poetry. Both families, the Dudleys and the Bradstreets, moved to the New World in 1630. The trip to America was a three month journey aboard the ship Arbella. The ship landed in Salem, Massachusetts. Upon arriving they did not find what they had expected. What they found was disease and a shortage of supplies among the colonies. After coming to this raw New World both families moved quite often, but finally in the year 1645 they were settled in North Andover, Massachusetts. Anne encountered many health problems in her life in America. In the year 1633 Anne gave birth to her first child. Simon became a judge and eventually took the position of governor of Massachusetts. Together he and Anne had eight children.

Born 1612 Died 1672
Anne Dudley Bradstreet was born in Northampton, England, to Thomas Dudley and Dorothy Yorke Dudley. She had a comfortable childhood at Tattershall Castle in Sempringham, Lincolnshire, as her father was the steward of the estates of Theophilus Clinton, the Puritan Earl of Lincoln. Encouraged by her father, she was taught by private tutors and learned a great deal due to extensive reading offered her by having access to the library in the manor, despite the fact that women of the time received little or no education. In 1628, at age 16, she married Simon Bradstreet, who was a protege of the Earl's, her father's assistant, and nine years her senior. Two years later, in 1630, her family immigrated to the New World, as members of John Winthrop's party, on the flagship, Arabella. Her father and husband were both governors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her family's position allowed Anne Bradstreet a dignified and honorable place in America, but not critical acceptance of her poetry. A mother of eight and housewife, she was also America's first important poet. Her poems dealt with the hardships of life in the early settlements, the Puritan religion, and in subtle ways, the role of women in those times. Because she was a woman, her work was strongly criticized, and some believed that she stole the ideas for her writing from men. In her earlier works, Bradstreet wrote in the style of male authors that she admired. She was careful about expressing her true feelings, and this limited her abilities. She wrote for her own satisfaction, and shared her poetry with family and friends. Without her knowledge, her brother-in-law, Rev. John Woodbridge, took a manuscript of her poems to England with him and had them published in a book called

Anne Bradsteet was the first published poet in colonial America.
She came to Massachussetts at age 18 with her new husband and her parents. Her father was governor of the colony and, later, her husband assumed the same office. She eventually gave birth to eight children.
Her poems speak of marriage, love, passion, and loss from the perspective of a woman of the American colonies yet there is often a hint something deeper, as well. More than simple religious devotionalism, there is the suggestion of mystical experience that colors her view of life. UXL Newsmakers Anne Dudley Bradstreet Anne Dudley Bradstreet (ca. 1612-1672) was a Puritan poet whose work portrays a deeply felt experience of American colonial life. She was the daughter and wife of Massachusetts governors. Anne Dudley, born about 1612 probably in Northampton, England, grew up in the cultivated household of the Earl of Lincoln, where her father, Thomas Dudley, was steward. Tutored by her father and availing herself of the extensive library, she was highly educated. Her later work reveals familiarity with Plutarch, Du Bartas, Sir Walter Raleigh, Quarles, Sidney, Spenser, perhaps Shakespeare, and, of course, the Bible. At 16, she writes, she experienced conversion.
