R
R ay suffered a stroke in November 1999, and has been using a wheelchair since, but he still generates boundless enthusiasm for life and for writing: He has had several books published each year recently, with several more scheduled for publication thru 2009. W hile SF great Isaac Asimov is known for his limitless intelligence, and Arthur C. Clarke for his vision, Ray is a child turned loose with a pen: He thinks and speaks like a child, free to visit love and grace and nameless fears and the ever-presence of death. R A National Book Award [Nov 2000] . He was inducted into the original Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1970, and into the revised/modern Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1999. Interviewed by Joshua Klein June 16th, 1999 At 79, Ray Bradbury is as prolific as ever. The author of such seminal works as Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles , as well as novels like Something Wicked This Way Comes and hundreds of short stories, Bradbury is not one to take breaks: He's been more or less writing non-stop since he was 20. The Onion briefly pulled Bradbury away from his work long enough to talk to him about his place in the canon, the state of education, and bad taste.
The Onion: I'm one of many to have grown up reading your work. How does it feel to be canonized?

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
(Voyager Classics, £7.99, 172 pages, paperback; first published 1953; this edition June 2001.) A new movie of Fahrenheit 451 is planned. Mel Gibson's company has already developed the script, and handed it to Frank Darabont to direct. He made The Shawshank Redemption , so he might not screw it up completely. Unlike the previous attempt, which was an oddity, this would be a mainstream Hollywood movie. It's a nice thought: a Hollywood movie which rails against the dumbing-down of society, and pleads for its audience to read books rather than wasting time with cheap and easy visual media. If the movie-makers had real guts, they'd just put a notice on the screen for ninety minutes: "Walk out of this cinema, go home, and read the book instead." But why should they? Why should anyone read this vision of a future dystopia which was written almost fifty years ago? After all, none of Bradbury's predictions have come true. Books aren't burnt. They aren't even ignored or marginalised. More are published than ever before. The dotcom revolution was led by an online bookshop. So, why bother to read a dystopian vision that might have looked plausible when it was published, but now seems dated and quaint?

Ask yourself, What do we want in this country, above all? People want to be happy, isn't that right? .... Well, aren't they? Don't we keep them moving, don't we give them fun? That's all we live for, isn't it? .... Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it." And that is precisely what the firemen do, in Ray Bradbury's classic novel of the future, FAHRENHEIT 451. They search out and burn books. It is a crime, in this society, to own or read books. Trivial information, in this culture, is good, and knowledge is evil. People receive all of their culture through television walls that are built into their houses. Guy Montag is a fireman who loves his work. He likes nothing better than to spray kerosene on a pile of books and watch the pages curl and turn into flakes of black ash that flutter through the air. Until the day he meets Clarisse, a young girl who has been told about a world of books, thoughts, and ideas. Their conversations precipitate a crisis of faith in Guy, and he begins to steal books and hide them in his home.

Thank you very much. January 21, 2005 at 09:50 AM I Have a question. When He said that they Couldn't Read books then How can they Read when Montag went to Read the books he had been keeping in the AIR CONDITIONG February 09, 2006 at 04:42 PM I taught 451 and in it, it states that the firemen still use books with which to learn ab out fire and fighting fire, so it's implied that people still know how to read, albeit not very effectively. It's also implied by how slowly Montag first reads that he is teaching himself how to read more effectively. September 06, 2006 at 09:43 AM

Ray Bradbury Ray Bradbury is one of the immortals among us, whose classic works of SF, fantasy and horror will be read a thousand years from now by our descendents and the inhabitants of the planets of a thousand distant stars. Ray is a winner of the Nebula, Prometheus, O.Henry Memorial, Balrog, Bram Stoker, Benjamin Franklin, Aviation-Space Writers and World Fantasy (Lifetime Achievement) Awards. It's surely redundant to say he's a SFWA Grand Master. He has won the Gandalf Award for Lifetime Contribution to Fantasy (in 1980), and published his first story in 1941. A writer for TV, radio, theater and film, his credits include a script for the film Moby Dick , and his show The Ray Bradbury Theater was aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. Ray's fiction comes in both heavy-duty novel-length parcels and the handy, travel-size short-story package for ease and convenience, and his work is brilliant in both forms. His novels include Fahrenheit 451 (Locus Award, 1987; Prometheus Award, 1984)

Ray Bradbury's Virtual Reality Universe
by Gary North
Maybe you’ve heard about virtual reality. It’s the hot new thing in video game technology. The player is handed an electronic weapons system, enters an image room, and finds himself in a computerized universe of robots and spaceships and fantasy. In 1949, I entered such a room. In my mind. Ray Bradbury took me there. I can date my own literary transition from childhood to adulthood with that visit. I was seven years old. Someone in my third-grade class had told me of a new radio program called "Dimension X." It was a science fiction show. I had already become addicted to weekly T.V. reruns of the old "Flash Gordon" serials, so I tuned in. I shall never forget the sound of the announcer’s voice, enhanced by a new technology (that I had not yet heard of), the tape recorder. The echo of that voice is still with me: "Dimension X . . . x . . . x . . . x."
