RAY BRADBURY ON MEL GIBSON'S FAHRENHEIT 451, PREACHING SCIENCE, AND THE UNIVERSE
by Thomas M. Sipos, L.A. bureau chief [April, 22, 2002]
[HollywoodInvestigator.com] * Film studio executives are too young learning to write requires decades of practice. * Hollywood has sacrificed story- telling on the altar of special effects. * Scientists are failing to excite people because they teach instead of preach. Those were some of the points made by author Ray Bradbury, 81, at the Santa Monica , on April 18, 2002, in a talk sponsored by the Writers Colony workshop. "I came from nowhere," began Bradbury, today renowned for science fantasy and horror literary classics such as The Martian Chronicles The Illustrated Man The October Country , and Fahrenheit 451 . "I couldn't write anything. But I had a dream of being a writer, in my heart. So I began to write when I was 12 and I'm still learning." Emphasizing that writing is a craft that requires years, even decades, of daily practice, he quipped, "You wouldn't hire a carpenter who hadn't studied his craft, would you? "I'm riding herd on five motion pictures right now, and all the people at all the studios are stupid. They're so goddamned dumb, I can't believe it. They've all gone to college, and they think they know how to write. They haven't even been to kindergarten.

Biography of Ray Bradbury (1920-)
Ray Bradbury Ray Douglas Bradbury, the author of more than 500 published literary works, was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on August 22, 1920. Bradbury moved with his family to Tucson, Arizona, when he was 6, but returned to Waukegan the following year. In 1932, Bradbury's father lost his job and the family again moved to Tucson, only to return to Waukegan the next year. In 1934, when Bradbury was 14, the family moved permanently to Los Angeles, California. Mr. Bradbury still resides in Los Angeles, but regards Waukegan as his hometown and has used it as the setting of two of his novels, under the pseudonym of Green Town. In his youth, Bradbury developed a love of magic and aspired to become a magician. Encouraged in his creativity by his family, Bradbury turned to writing at a young age, a profession at which many would argue he has worked quite a bit of magic. In 1937, at the age of 17, Bradbury became a member of the Los Angeles Science Fiction League, through which he published his first work, a short lived science fiction fan magazine. Bradbury's first short story was published in Weird Tales when he was 20. This was the first of many professional publications of Bradbury's work, which includes

Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451 Misinterpreted
L.A.’s august Pulitzer honoree says it was never about censorship By AMY E. BOYLE JOHNSTON Wednesday, May 30, 2007 - 7:00 pm (Illustration by Mr. Fish) When the Pulitzer Prizes were handed out in May during a luncheon at Columbia University, two special citations were given. One went to John Coltrane (who died in 1967), the fourth time a jazz musician has been honored. The other went to Ray Bradbury, the first time a writer of science fiction and fantasy has been honored.
Bradbury, a longtime Los Angeles resident who leads an active civic life and even drops the Los Angeles Times letters to the editor on his views of what ails his town, did not attend, telling the Pulitzer board his doctor did not want him to travel.
But the real reason, he told the L.A. Weekly , had less to do with the infirmities of age (he turns 87 in August) than with the fact that recipients only shake hands with Lee C. Bollinger, Columbia University’s president, and smile for a photograph.
