Brackett's first published science fiction story was "Martian Quest", which appeared in the February 1940 issue of Astounding Science Fiction . Her earliest years as a writer (1940-1942) were her most productive in numbers of stories written; however, these works show a writer still engaged in mastering her craft. The first of her science fiction stories still attempt to emphasize a quasi-scientific angle, with problems resolved by an appeal to the (usually imaginary) chemical, biological, or physical laws of her invented worlds. As Brackett became more comfortable as an author, this element receded and was replaced by adventure stories with a strong touch of fantasy. Occasional stories have social themes, such as "The Citadel of Lost Ships" (1943), which considers the effects on the native cultures of alien worlds of Earth's expanding trade empire. From my graphs, I eliminated Pro GoHs not known as authors or editors (e.g. artists, an essayist (Ley), GoHs from TV and motion pictures). In the case of some artists, it was difficult to learn the date of their first work in the field.
I eliminated the Ballantines because I'm not sure of the date of their first SF or fantasy work.
Most GoHs primarily known as editors have also written stories; I used date of first sale to mark their entry into the field. I'm not sure I have accurate figures on the first sales of Wolfgang Jeschke, Josef Nesvadaba, or Sakyo Komatsu. I did the best I could.

Elizabeth Brackett reports from Chicago's O'Hare Airport as it resumes operation following Tuesday's attacks.
ELIZABETH BRACKETT: Lines were long at United ticket counters at O'Hare Airport at 6:30 this morning. Passengers waiting were a mix of those who had planned to travel today and others still trying to get home after last week's shutdown. SPOKESPERSON: What time is your flight? SPOKESPERSON: 9:00. SPOKESPERSON: No, it's okay. You should be okay. ELIZABETH BRACKETT: Surgeon Ramon Schmidt had been held up for three days in London. DR. RAMON SCHMIDT: I'm a surgeon and have a full week's schedule. I'm on call today, but obviously I'm not there to take calls. ELIZABETH BRACKETT: Heightened security measures were evident: Sniffer dogs now working 12-hour shifts at O'Hare; no curbside checking, much to the dismay of skycaps. ELIZABETH BRACKETT: So what do you think about it?

Leigh (Douglass) Brackett (1915-1978) American writer of crime novels and short stories. Brackett's major work was in the field science and fantasy fiction (over 200 titles). She also wrote screenplays for several highly acclaimed films by Howard Hawks , television scripts for Checkmate and Suspense series, and a play, TERROR AT NORTHFIELD, for the Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Shortly before her death, Brackett scripted THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK for the director and pulp fiction fan George Lucas. "Howard Hawks sits down with you for a series of chats, giving you all his thoughts on what kind of story he wants, how it ought to go, etc., and then retires to Palm Springs and the golf course, leaving you to come up with a script the best way you can." ('From The Big Sleep to The Long Goodbye by Leight Brackett, 1973) Leigh Brackett was born in Los Angeles, California. In her childhood Brackett was a great fan of Robert E. Howard, C.L. Moore and Edgar Rice Burroughs and his John Carter's Martian Stories - these swashbuckling fantasies and space operas are visible also in the short story The Lake of Gone-Forever' (1949): "But it was easy, out of his childhood memories and those strangely incoherent notes, to build a romantic mystery around the lonely prospector's discovery of an unknown world and his subsequent haunted death. Marcia had found it all fascinating and did not doubt for a moment Conway's statement that he was seeking to solve that mystery which, he said, had overshadowed his whole life." Brackett's first short story, 'Martian Quest,' was published in

(Portions of this bio are adapted from the flap copy for the 1999 Dennis McMillan edition of No Good From a Corpse , originally published in 1944. Grateful acknowledgement goes to Dennis for letting letting us use it. There's also an excerpt you can read...) Here's the story... In 1944, a young writer of pulp detective and science fiction tales from Los Angeles published her first book, No Good from a Corpse . According to Bill Pronzini, in Hardboiled , the novel was "so Chandleresque in style and approach it might have been written by Chandler himself." Pronzini considers Brackett "one of the top hardboiled writers of all time." It also impressed lots of other folks. In fact, her dialogue so impressed one of her readers, the Hollywood director Howard Hawks, that he had his secretary call in "this guy Bracketthe'd be good to write the screenplay of The Big Sleep with Bill Faulkner." When "this guy Brackett" turned out to be a young woman, he shrugged off his surprise and hired her anyway. The rest is film history, as Hawks' 1946 version of The Big Sleep , starring Humphrey Bogart and written by Leigh Brackett, William Faulkner, and Jules Furthman, is considered one of the best movies ever made in the genre.
