SNOBS AND WETBACKS
Sneering at the Class Divide
T. Coraghessan Boyle is an overpraised novelist with an unpleasant habit of sneering at his own cardboard characters. Some writers can carry this off, some can't. Aldous Huxley adopted a toplofty attitude toward his creatures, but he had the intellectual force to transform snobbery into satire. Among current novelists, Martin Amis lacks intellectual force but is well supplied with nastiness, which occasionally resembles humor. Boyle merely sounds as if he needs an antacid. His new novel, The Tortilla Curtain (Viking; 355 pages; $23.95), botches a good theme: the shuddering distaste of California's patio-living Anglos for the Mexican illegals who perform the state's stoop labor. His pale hero is Delaney, a nature writer who has moved with his wife Kyra, a real estate shark, to a housing development above Topanga Canyon. Delaney is not just politically correct, he's politically exquisite, but when a Mexican man, Candido, blunders in front of his white Acura on a canyon road, his reaction is angry revulsion: the wounded wetback, to whom he gives a $20 bill, is an infiltrator.

Ecstasy in a Frog Pond:
T. Coraghessan Boyle and the Sublime
Written by Elizabeth Brunner, 1996, for Literary Theory class at Cal Poly under Professor Larry Inchausti
"Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos ... to celebrate a world that lies spread out around us like a bewildering and stupendous dream." John Cheever
“I swear a mouse is proof enough to stagger sextillions of infidels.” Walt Whitman

With our lives gone stale and our world quickly approaching an expiration date, we victims of technological numbing crave the sublime, crave any experience of intensity. Responding to both the despondency and the absurdity of modern American life, contemporary author T. Coraghessan Boyle slams his readers awake with tension-filled prose. Despite that bohemian black-leather smirk on book jackets, Boyle builds transformative and political messages into his bizarre, often dark, fiction. In the unforgettable short story “Hopes Rise,” Boyle juxtaposes environmental disaster with the life-force chorus of breeding frogs, producing a moment of deliberate sublimity. Although writing in the third century, Longinus provides a definition of the sublime powerful enough to illuminate text centuries later in our jaded age. Certainly we need the sublime now more than ever; we need to be exalted, elated, and ecstatic. As Longinus describes, “the soul is raised by true sublimity, it gains a proud step upwards...” (60). The sublime overpowers our reason and our senses, lifting us into a transformed state. In science, the sublimity process requires heating a solid into a gas and then condensing the vapor back into a purified solid form. Similarly, the literary sublime condenses meaning into passages of such “extraordinary genius” and beauty that the reader is purified by a quantum leap in understanding (56).

T . C. Boyle 's newest novel, Drop City (March 2003), is set in 1970. The novel tells the story of a hippie commune in California whose members decide to relocate to the unforgiving wilds of Alaska. There, they face challenges that severely test their devotion to peace, free love and the simple life. According to the publisher, Drop City is neither a satire nor nostalgic look at the 1960s and its aftermath. It is a "surprising, rich allusive, and non-sentimental look at the ideals of a generation and their impact on today's radically changed world." "[Boyle is] one of the most inventive and verbally exuberant writers of his generation." New York Times Los Angeles Times Book Review states, "Boyle's prose is a presence, a litany, a symphony of words, a chorale of idioms ancient and modern, a treasury of strange and wonderful place names, a glossary of things, good food and horrendous ills." The Times Literary Supplement describes the author's style as "punctuated with fire-cracker metaphors, a showy extravagance with obscurities of language and an easy mediation between hard fact and invention."

In his last novel, Drop City The Inner Circle , tackles still another fragment of Americana that has fallen through the cracks of historical ignorance. The Inner Circle apologia pro vita sua Budding Prospects was his only other lengthy foray into first-person narrative. That Boyle lends the tale a singular voice of reflection gives it an earnestness and immediacy that is captivating, letting history unfurl at the edge while Milk is ensnared in an emotional trial that undermines everything he is working toward. Sexual Behavior in the Human Male , and throughout, Milk is the eager progeny, bent with feelings of inferiority and confusion. The Inner Circle Boyle is that rare breed of American literary fiction writer, an alluring wordsmith and evocative storyteller who can waltz the belles-lettres and swing with the masses. What he has accomplished yet again with this novel is to capture a snapshot of American history, a fictional retelling that hits the heart with more accuracy than a dozen biographies could ever hope to realize.

    T. Coraghessan Boyle
    T. Coraghessan Boyle (also known as T.C. Boyle, born Thomas John Boyle on December 2, 1948) is a U.S. novelist and short story writer. Since the late 1970s, he has published eleven novels and more than 60 short stories. He won the PEN/Faulkner award in 1988 for his third novel, World's End, which recounts 300 years in upstate New York. He is married with three children. Since 1986, Boyle has been Professor of English at the University of Southern California. Thomas John Boyle was born December 2, 1948 in Peekskill, New York. He grew up in the small town on the Hudson Valley that he regularly fictionalizes as Peterskill (as in widely anthologized short story Greasy Lake). Boyle changed his middle name when he was 17 and exclusively used Coraghessan for much of his career, but now also goes by T.C. Boyle.

Eisenhower and Khrushchev's wife; "The Hector Quesadilla Story," a sad tale of an aging ball player; "The Overcoat II," Boyle's modern-day take on the classic Gogol story; and the much-anthologized title story, in which a pack of very naïve young men desperately trying to be tough pay the sad consequences of their fake machismo.
