Links to this article Random House. 477 pp. $27.95 The prospect of this novel is enticing: Norman Mailer on Adolf Hitler. Mailer, who has fearlessly, full-throatedly tackled Marilyn Monroe, Jesus Christ, Lee Harvey Oswald, Picasso, Muhammad Ali and Gary Gilmore (among others), seemed to be taking on his biggest confrontation yet. This hefty book from an iconic American man of letters, now in his 84th year, seemed to promise that the familiar Mailerian audacity was in fine fettle. I wondered if, here, he might just match his masterwork, The Executioner's Song The Castle in the Forest is a baffling, meandering, self-indulgent curio of a book at moments brilliantly insightful and fascinating but more often prompting jaw-dropping incredulity.

Fan Web Site
This page is dedicated to providing information on one of our greatest western stars. A man of principle - both on the screen and off. We will provide data, as well as links to text and photos on other Web sites. Born in 1895, Boyd worked as a laborer until he had a small part in a film in 1920. Soon he became a star of a number of silent movies. In the thirties, his career took a nose dive until he starred in a 1935 western as a character named Hopalong Cassidy. Between 1935 and 1948, Boyd starred in 66 Cassidy movies. In each film, dressed all in black, riding his white horse, Topper, he provided action as well as a moral lesson to his audiences. When these films were released to television in the 1950's, a whole new generation of people became "Hoppy" fans. Boyd died in 1972. Today, with the showing of Hoppy movies on cable television, William Boyd is well known to new generations. In July, 2001 The Encore Western Channel presented a 48 Hour Hoppy Marathon and released a new one hour special on Bill Boyd. We ask anyone who knew Bill Boyd to e-mail their stories to us for possible inclusion on this site. See e-mail below.

Hopalong Cassidy and William Boyd
When actor William Boyd’s career escalated, Hopalong Cassidy rode to the rescue, creating a new movie cowboy.
An interviewer once asked the late actor Peter Sellers to tell him a little about himself. Sellers, who specialized playing a bevy bizarre characters, was unable to answer the question satisfactorily. He was so enmeshed in his acting that the real-life Peter Sellers could only relate to the characters he was playing. William Boyd found himself in a similar situation except, in his case, only one character was involved a fictitious, black hatted, white maned cowboy that absorbed nearly the entire personality of the man who portrayed him on the screen. Boyd could not have been happier. At one time there were two William Boyds in the movies. The first was a successful star of the silent screen and was well on his way to making a name for himself in talkies. The second was only semi-successful as an actor. One night the police raided the home of the second William Boyd and discovered a den of iniquity gambling, illegal liquor and pornographic films. The Hearst newspaper chain printed a story about the raid, but got the two Boyds mixed up. The picture of William Boyd, the silent movie star, was placed on the story instead of the real culprit. Although hasty retractions were printed, the first William Boyd’s career was virtually destroyed. He then began a long slide toward obscurity until rescued by the dashing foreman of the Bar-20 Ranch four years later.

In reply to the circular, he says: "Being generally considered a rusty, crusty old bachelor, I am tempted to consider your questions as to my 'wife's maiden name, number, names, ages of children,' as rather impertinent, and intended to ruffle my amiable temperbut in vainit can't be done.
