Finding Wilfred Owen's Forwarding Address: Moving Beyond the World War One Paradigm
William Hecker Department of English, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY 10996, USA Since the Wilfred Owen school of poetry serves as the critical standard by which other war poems are judged, many accomplished poems from other conflicts are often dismissed as insignificant. Simone Weil's observation that war is a force that objectifies human life offers a perspective which is more inclusive than the World War One paradigm.

A month later, in January 17, 1912, Robert Scott, Edward Wilson, Birdie bowers, edgar Evans, and Lawrence Oates finally found the South Pole and saw the

    History of Antarctica
Terra Australis Incognita In ancient times, the concept of a landmass to the south was thought of by the Greeks.
The Greek Philosophers theorized that the Earth was a sphere.
Their ideas of the balance of the Earth led them to the idea of a body of land at the southern end of the Earth.
The notion of this landmass was called Terra Australis Incognita, meaning "Unknown Southern Land."
Even though there is a North Pole as well, the idea of a South Pole was a far more intriguing concept. The Courageous Explorers During the early years, most expeditions to Antarctica were related to economic motives.
Explorers were searching for new trading routes.
Traders and hunters wanted to hunt seals for their fur, and yet other people went to Antarctic to seek mineral riches.
Beginning with Captain James Cook in 1773, the Resolution and the Adventure were the first crews to ever cross the Antarctic Circle.
During the early 1820's, Thaddeus von Bellingshausen of Russia claimed the first recorded viewing of an icefield at 69 degrees south latitude, and proclaimed that he was the first person to sight Antarctica.
In that same year, Edward Bransfield, Nathaniel Palmer, and Smith, also claimed that they sighted Antarctica first.

The following points are made by Max Jones (citation below):
    1) On 17 January 1912 five men from the British Antarctic Expedition commanded by Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), arrived at the spot they calculated to be the South Pole. To their dismay, they found they had been preceded by a Norwegian expedition led by Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), which had reached the Pole a month earlier. "The wind is blowing hard, T. -21 deg and there is that curious damp, cold feeling in the air which chills one to the bone", Scott wrote in his journal. "Great God this is an awful place and terrible enough for us to have labored to it without the reward of priority." The British explorers faced an 850-mile journey, hauling their sledge across the ice, to reach their base camp at Cape Evans and safety.
    2) The second half of the nineteenth century was the age of the explorer hero. Developments in transport and communications opened both new territories for Western explorers, and new opportunities for distributing accounts of their exploits to an ever-expanding readership. The most spectacular expeditions created international heroes, whose endeavors were chronicled in newspapers, lecture theaters, and best-selling books. Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873), Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), and Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) became household names. The endeavors of such men achieved the most celebrated goals of 19th-century exploration: the North-West Passage, the North-East Passage, the forbidden city of Lhasa, the sources of the Nile, and the North Pole.
