Scottish biographer and diarist. He was a member of Samuel Johnson 's Literary Club and the two men travelled to Scotland together in 1773, as recorded in Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785). His Life of Samuel Johnson was published in 1791. Boswell's ability to record Johnson's pithy conversation verbatim makes this a classic of English biography. During his European tour he met the French thinkers Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire An Account of Corsica (1768). Boswell's long-lost personal papers were acquired for publication by Yale University in 1949, and the Journals are of exceptional interest. hut(3)

    INTRODUCTION
One of the most colorful figures in eighteenth-century English literature, Boswell is esteemed for his inimitable conversational style and pictorial documentation of life in such nonfiction works as Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785) and for a masterpiece of English biography, The Life of Samuel Johnson (1791). In this work Boswell firmly established biography as a leading literary form through a conscious attempt to recreate his subject by combining life history with anecdotes and dialogues. Its diversity reflects Boswell's several distinctive characteristics, which include an acute grasp of social setting and human nature, a rigid attention to realistic depiction, a responsive sensibility, and a willingness to engage in public self-analysis and self-exposure. In addition to the Life

Boswell was born in Edinburgh, and educated at the universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Utrecht. His most important early work was An Account of Corsica (1768), a sympathetic study of the struggle for independence of that island, written after an extended tour of Europe. In 1763 Boswell met the writer Samuel Johnson, and from 1772 until Johnson's death in 1784 the two men were closely associated. In 1773 Boswell was admitted to Johnson's Literary Club, which included the statesman
