On this day in 1795 James Boswell died, aged fifty-four. Even without his two-decade relationship to Samuel Johnson and the famous books which came from it, Boswell would have a secure place in literary history. This is due to the remarkable stash of journals, letters and personal papers which he kept, and which friends, relatives and negligence kept from the world for over a century. Robert Burns
Robert Burns (1759-1796) is considered Scotland's greatest poet. Best known for his feeling descriptions of country life and for satires against the political and religious hypocrisy of the day, Burns wrote much of his poetry in his broad Scots dialect . The eldest child of William and Agnes Burnes (the elder Burnes spelled his name with an "e"), Burns was born in Ayrshire and lived a life of hard labor and poverty as he struggled with his father to make a series of poor farms productive. By 1786, with his father dead, and more failed farms to the family credit, Burns nearly emigrated to Jamaica. His first volume of poetry, however, was published that year to great acclaim, and Burns became the darling of Edinburgh. Further editions of poetry developed Burns' international reputation. Late in his life, supporting himself as an exciseman, Burns helped to collect and also wrote a wide-range of traditional Scottish songs. B oswell G uide

Executive summary: The Life of Samuel Johnson Scottish man of letters, the biographer of Samuel Johnson , born at Edinburgh on the 29th of October 1740. His grandfather was in good practice at the Scottish bar, and his father, Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck, was also a noted advocate, who, on his elevation to the supreme court in 1754, took the name of his Ayrshire property as Lord Auchinleck. A Thomas Boswell (said upon doubtful evidence to have been a minstrel in the household of James IV) was killed at Flodden, and since 1513 the family had greatly improved its position in the world by intermarriage with the first Scots nobility. In contradiction to his father, a rigid Presbyterian Whig, James was "a fine boy, wore a white cockade, and prayed for King James until his uncle Cochrane gave him a shilling to pray for King George, which he accordingly did" ("Whigs of all ages are made in the same way" was Johnson's comment.) He met one or two English boys, and acquired a "tincture of polite letters" at the high school in Edinburgh. Like Robert Louis Stevenson , he early frequented society such as that of the actors at the Edinburgh theater, sternly disapproved of by his father. At the university, where he was constrained for a season to study civil law, he met William Johnson Temple, his future friend and correspondent. The letters of Boswell to his "Atticus" were first published by Bentley in 1857. One winter he spent at Glasgow, where he sat under

A page from James Boswell's Iraq sketchbook (1943-1944)
More than 60 years before the current presence of British troops in Iraq, the artist James Boswell (1906-1971) was posted to the country during the Second World War. As a member of the Communist Party and co-founder of the left-wing Artists International Association, he was already known for his satirical anti-establishment drawings. However, he was profoundly affected by his desert experience, which he recorded in words and drawings in his sketchbooks - seen here together for the first time "Here in the Euphrates valley we work and play.We do all the things that soldiers have always done - drink, gossip, gamble, fight, sleep as much as we can and carry on a guerrilla war against the ennui that descends on an idle army. fifty miles out here is as good as fifty years. Stalingrad has begun to strike back. To the west the Eighth have begun their drive from Alamein. But here there is quiet and news is scarce and sometimes when the rains cut us off for days, our world shrinks to a tiny island. No steady stream of casualties fills our hospital to remind us that we are part of the war. For us there is only the tedious everyday struggle against malaria, dysentery and boredom. The dust floats evocative of human suffering and vanity in the impersonal glare of a savage sun and we are caught in a web of circumstance that stretches into past and future in an infinite series of repeated patterns."

    Boswell, James
Boswell, James, , Scottish author, b. Edinburgh; son of a distinguished judge. At his father's insistence the young Boswell reluctantly studied law. Admitted to the bar in 1766, he practiced throughout his life, but his true interest was in a literary career and in associating with the great men of his day. Boswell first met Samuel Johnson on a trip to London in 1763. The same year he traveled about the Continent, where he made the acquaintance of Rousseau and Voltaire. He achieved literary fame with his

St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh James Boswell lived from 29 October 1740 to 19 May 1795. He was a lawyer, a diarist, and an author. He was also a man whose dissolute lifestyle led to a premature death from the effects of venereal disease and alcohol, yet whose two volume biography of Samuel Johnson, published in 1791, was viewed in its day - and remains - a classic contribution to the art of the biographer.
James Boswell
James Boswell was born in a house in Blair's Land, Parliament Close, near St Giles' Cathedral in the old Town of Edinburgh. This was the Edinburgh house of his parents, Alexander Boswell, 8th Laird of Auchinleck and his wife Euphemia Erskine, Lady Auchinleck. The Boswells maintained their Edinburgh house to allow Boswell's father to carry out his role as a high court judge. Boswell's mother was descended from a minor branch of Scottish royalty. The family estate was at Auchinleck in Ayrshire. Boswell's childhood was not a happy one: he wrote later of his mother's suffocating Calvinism and his father's coldness. At the age of 13, he was sent to study law at Edinburgh University, and at 19 was moved by his father to study under
