England Occupation ... Author James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck and 1st Baronet ( October 29 May 19 ) was a lawyer, diarist, and author born in Edinburgh Scotland . He was the eldest son of a judge, Alexander Boswell, 8th Laird of Auchinleck and his wife Euphemia Erskine, Lady Auchinleck. Boswell's mother was a strict Calvinist , and he felt that his father was cold to him. Boswell, who is best known as Samuel Johnson ’s biographer , inherited his father’s estate Auchinleck in Ayrshire. His name has passed into the English language as a term ( Boswell Boswellian Boswellism ) for a constant companion and observer. Boswell is also known for the detailed and frank journals that he wrote for long periods of his life, which remained undiscovered until the 1920s. These included voluminous notes on the grand tour of Europe that he took as a young nobleman and, subsequently, of his tour of Scotland with Johnson. His journals also record meetings and conversations with eminent individuals belonging to The Club , including Lord Monboddo David Garrick Edmund Burke Joshua Reynolds and Oliver Goldsmith . His written works focus chiefly on others, but he was admitted as a good companion and accomplished conversationalist in his own right.

James Boswell (1740-1795) Scottish lawyer, essayist, known for his two-volume biography THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, LL.D (1791), published seven years after the death of its subject. Boswell met Samuel Johnson in May 1763 in Davies's London bookshop and the two became fast friends. He recorded in detail Johnson's words and activities in a relatively short period. Later the historian Thomas Macaulay (1800-1859) called Boswell's worship of Dr. Johnson " Lues Boswelliana , or disease of admiration." "We cannot tell the precise moment when a friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindness there is at last one which makes the heart run over." (from Life of Johnson James Boswell was born in Edinburgh the son of Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, who was a judge in the supreme courts of Scotland. Boswell's mother, Euphemia Erskine, was descended from a minor branch of Scottish royalty. His family had had for two-and-a-half centuries as its seat the estate of Auchinleck in Ayrshire. Near the new mansion were the ruins of the Old Castle, which he eagerly showed to Johnson and other friends. Much of his life Boswell was plagued by his mother's suffocating Calvinism and his father's coldness. In one of his journals Boswell wrote: "I do not recollect having had any other valuable principle impressed upon me by my father except a strict regard for truth, which he impressed upon my mind by a hearty beating at an early age when I lied, and then talking of the

James Boswell
From LoveToKnow 1911
JAMES BOSWELL (1740-1795), Scottish man of letters, the biographer of Samuel Johnson , was born at Edinburgh on the 29th of October 1740. His grandfather was in good practice at the Scottish bar , and his father, Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck, was also a noted advocate, who, on his elevation to the supreme court in 1754, took the name of his Ayrshire property as Lord Auchinleck. A Thomas Boswell (said upon doubtful evidence to have been a minstrel in the household of James IV.) was killed at Flodden , and since 1513 the family had greatly improved its position in the world by intermarriage with the first Scots nobility . In contradiction to his father, a rigid Presbyterian Whig , James was "a fine boy, wore a white cockade , and prayed for King James until his uncle Cochrane gave him a shilling to pray for King George , which he accordingly did" ("Whigs of all ages are made in the same way" was Johnson's comment). He met one or two English boys, and acquired a " tincture of polite letters" at the high school in Edinburgh. Like R. L. Stevenson, he early frequented society such as that of the actors at the Edinburgh theatre , sternly disapproved of by his father. At the university, where he was constrained for a season to study

James Boswell (1740-1795) James Boswell The people in Boswell's life - A-E - F-J ... Other weblinks "[James Boswell] is, and he will remain, an astonishing person. His predilection for romantic disguises, his readiness to assume gravely the most unexpected characters, his rippling good nature, his extravagance and folly and weakness, his odd piety, his awful glooms, his alternations of revelry and solemnity, his prodigious literary success and his final melancholy abasement make him the most amusing and the most perplexing figure in our national biography." So wrote C. E. Vulliamy in his 1932 biography (CVJB, p. 1) of Boswell, and the words explains a lot about why so many are still fascinated by the man to this day. When a great part of his personal papers were discovered in the 1920s, the world already knew him as the author of the much praised biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson . The papers, among them letters and journals, were discovered in places such as Fettercairn House and at Malahide Castle north of Dublin, Ireland from the 1920s to 1950. Most of them ended up in the possession of Yale University, who, beginning in 1950, under the general editorship of Frederick A. Pottle

Hi - I'm Chris Whiley. My main interests have always included 18th century English literature and, in particular, Samuel Johnson and James Boswell. I'm a member of the Johnson Society(Lichfield) . Check out as well the Johnson Society of London.
I've decided to start off by offering a range of links, plus commentary, to sites related to James Boswell, as, on the Net at least, he's the neglected one in the duo. I'll also be putting up a shortish, but fairly comprehensive biography and bibliography . If you find this useful, let me know what else you'd like to see. Just click the picture after you've read the brief summary if you want to visit the site.

Part of our Scottish Authors section. Boswell, James - born October 29, 1740, Edinburgh, Scotland
Died May 19, 1795, London, England Friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson (Life of Johnson, 2 vol., 1791). The 20th-century publication of his journals proved him to be also one of the world's greatest diarists. Boswell's father, Alexander Boswell, advocate and laird of Auchinleck in Ayrshire from 1749, was raised to the bench with the judicial title of Lord Auchinleck in 1754. The Boswells were anold and well-connected family, and James was subjected to the strong pressure of an ambitious family. Boswell hated the select day school to which he was sent at age 5, and from 8 to 13 he was taught at home by tutors. From 1753 to 1758 he went through the arts course at the University of Edinburgh. Returning to the university in 1758 to study law, he became enthralled by the theatre and fell in love with a Roman Catholic actress. Lord Auchinleck thought it prudent to send him to the University of Glasgow, where he attended the lectures of Adam Smith. In the spring of 1760 he ran away to London. He was, he soon found, passionately fond of metropolitan culture, gregarious, high-spirited, sensual, and attractive to women; and London offered just the combination of gross and refined pleasures that seemed to fulfill him. At this time he contracted gonorrhea, an affliction that he was to endure many times in the course of his life.
