The blind man of Hispanic literature, Borges was a giant among contemporary writers. His fantastic and magical approach to writing created innumerable followers and made his prose and poetry, the literature to emulate in contemporary Hispanic literature. For Borges, "metaphysics is a branch of fantastic literature". Thus he wrote his fantastic tales with metaphysical concerns over the human existence, the universe and time. His most recurring symbols are mirrors, labyrinths and dreams. Fictions Labyrinths Other Inquisitions The Aleph , 1949, and Poems , 1967 are his most famous works.

Jorge Luis Borges is one of the great literary heroes of Argentina. Born in Argentina, Borges spent several years in Europe as a child and was educated in English as well as Spanish. As an adult he returned to Argentina to write and work as a professor of English. Artistically rebellious, Borges wrote poems and stories which are imaginative and often puzzling, many of them vehicles for complex philosophical themes. His 1944 collection of short stories, Ficciones , is widely regarded as his masterwork. Prolific and smart as all get-out, Borges also wrote allegories, fantasies and even detective stories. A Conversation With Jorge Luis Borges Jorge Luis Borges is a man of many worlds and moods. A significant figure in modern Spanish literature, he has drawn much of his creative force from the Germanic world: English poetry, Franz Kafka, the warrior mythology of the old English and Norse. Strongly anti-political and anti-moralistic, this Argentine's work frequently revolves around the history of South America and the stirrings of the human heart. A storyteller who claims to perform his work in a simple manner, Borges may set his tales in exotic temples or in neighborhood bars; he may describe tigers and knives flashing in moonlight, or the patience of a scholar thumbing an ancient manuscript. Borges' writings emerge from dreams and from experience. Nothing can be taken for certain; life is powerful, but poorly glimpsed before it overwhelms. The result of Borges' continual crossing of linguistic, mythological, and social boundaries is a body of work essays, tales and poetry which has earned recognition the world over. In 1960 he shared the World Publisher's Prize with the French Playwright, Samuel Beckett, and he is often predicted to be a future recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Although Borges began publishing in Buenes Aires in the 1920's, and his important collection of prose, Ficciones , came out in 1944, it was not until the appearance in 1961 of Labyrinths (New Directions), an anthology of his earlier stories, essays, and poetry, that his work spread to the U.S. and other English-speaking lands. JORGE LUIS BORGES
Argentine poet, essayist, and short-story writer, whose tales of fantasy and dreamworlds are classics of the 20th-century world of literature. Borges was profoundly influenced by European culture, English literature, and such thinkers as Berkeley, who argued that there is no material substance; the sensible world consists only of ideas, which exists for so long as they are perceived. Most of Borges' tales embrace universal themes - the often recurring circular labyrinth can be seen as a metaphor of life or a riddle who's theme is time. Although Borges' name was mentioned in speculations about the Nobel Prize, Borges never became a Nobel Laureate. Jorge Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires . His family included British ancestry and he learned English before Spanish. His father, of Italian, Jewish, and English heritage, was a lawyer and a psychology teacher, who demonstrated the paradoxes of Zeno on a chessboard for his son. In the large house was also a library and garden which enchanted Borges' imagination. Borges' mother was a translator; she lived far into her 90's. In 1914 the family moved to Geneva , where Borges learned French and German and received his B.A. from the Collège of Geneva.

For Christmas, I was quite pleased to get a Zen Stone Plus in my stocking. I'm one of those people - the ones who exist between platforms. (I lost my true allegiance decades ago, and have been a switch-hitter ever since.) One of the things this means is that I do some things by hand that other people - the loyalists - are used to having done automatically. So there I was, Christmas afternoon, moving playlists from the iTunes on our Windows machine onto the cute little non-iPod. Grab, drag, copy.

Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) Argentine poet, essayist, and short-story writer, whose tales of fantasy and dreamworlds are classics of the 20th-century world literature. Most of Borges's tales embrace universal themes - the often recurring circular labyrinth can be seen as a metaphor of life or a riddle which theme is time. Although Borges's name was mentioned in speculations about Nobel Prize, Borges never became a Nobel Laureate. "When the end draws near, there no longer remain any remembered images; only words remain. It is not strange that time should have confused the words that once represented me with those that were symbols of the fate of he who accompanied me for so many centuries. I have been Homer; shortly, I shall be On One, like Ulysses; shortly, I shall be all men; I shall be dead." (from 'The Immortal') Jorge Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires. His family included British ancestry and he learned English before Spanish. Jorge Guillermo Borges, his father, was a lawyer and a psychology teacher, who demonstrated the paradoxes of Zeno on a chessboard for his son. In the large house was also a library and garden which enchanted Borges's imagination. Borges's mother, Leonor Acevedo Haedo, was a translator; she lived far into her 90's. In 1914 the family moved to Geneva, where Borges learned French and German and received his B.A. from the Collège of Geneva. According to a story, Borges's father, worried about his son's sexual initation, sent him to a prostitute in the red-light district area, the Place Dubourg de Four. There Borges started to think that his father was her "client". Borges's visit failed miserably and perhaps contributed to his lifelong difficulties with women.

nce, when presented with a biography of himself, Jorge Luis Borges is reported to have said that the book was probably fine, but that he was not interested in the topic. Yet this man who is reputed to have had hardly any life outside of his books, and who dismissed whatever life he did have as inconsequential, has already been the subject of several biographies, with more to come. An author who delighted in writing reviews of nonexistent books has thus become the subject of books about his oft-professed humdrum existence as an essayist, editor, poet and writer of stories, a librarian and, later, a teacher of literature. Irony surrounds everything involving Borges the writer and Borges the man. The ''facts'' of Borges's life can be summarized very briefly: Born in 1899 in Buenos Aires to a scholarly but hardly wealthy family, he was educated in Argentina and Europe, returning to his native city in 1921. His writing career began in earnest in the 1930's, although his work was not widely available in English until the 1960's. In his later years he gave lectures around the world, but was most comfortable in the unworldly solitude of his library. Borges lived most of his life in the company of his widowed mother, who read to him as he became progressively blind. He was married for the first time at the age of 68, to a childhood sweetheart, and divorced three years later. A few weeks before his death, in 1986, he married his secretary and traveling companion, who had once been his student.

      The Jorge Luis Borges Collection
One of the more notable collections in the Special Collections Department at the University of Virginia Library is that of works by and about the Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), a distinguished poet and essayist and one of the finest writers of short stories in world letters. It contains more than two thousand individual items in virtually all formats, spanning Borges' career of sixty-five years. The collection's depth is unsurpassed, and many items it contains are quite rare. During his lifetime, Borges became renowned as a creative artist whose works affected modern literature far beyond the borders of his native land. Despite the critical acclaim Borges enjoyed, however, his books have been uncommonly difficult to acquire, particularly titles from his first decade of active literary production. Some early works survive in only a scant handful of extant copies, the author having recovered and deliberately destroyed many more. The University of Virginia Library owns copies of all these early pieces. One of the recently-acquired items in the Borges Collection is a nine-page manuscript acquired in 1996
