Finding-Aid for the Finkel Papers [00045]
Collection Description
Papers, 1947-1983.  ca. 5580 items  Access: Open  Donald Finkel, a poet-in-residence at Washington University since 1960, has produced a sizable body of innovative poetry over the past two decades. He was born in New York and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University. Much of his teaching career has been at Washington University where he developed the Writers' Program with his wife, Constance Urdang, but he has also taught at the University of Iowa, Bard College, and Bennington College.  Finkel has written ten volumes of poetry, beginning with The Clothings' New Emperor (1959). His recent work includes A Splintered Mirror: Chinese Poetry from the Democracy Movement ( 1991). Finkel's work has not received the extensive critical attention often given to the work of other authors; yet, what has been said about his poems is overwhelmingly positive. Finkel is a painstaking researcher and collector of information and his poems reflect this. They are grounded in a thorough understanding and appreciation of their subjects, and often contain "found" texts.  Reflecting Finkel's unique place among American poets, his papers represent one of the more interesting groups in the Washington University manuscript collection. His extensive research materials, journals, notes, and heavily revised manuscripts comprise the bulk of the Finkel Papers. A large collection of editorial matter toward all of his books and a small, yet revealing professional correspondence with editors and literary colleagues completes the Finkel Collection.

Notes:
Andrew Swarbrick, Out of Reach. The Poetry of Philip Larkin (Basingstoke: Macmillan, 1995), 143; This reminds one of the basic historical facts of the period: "The seven years from 1971 to 1977 must be surely be amongst the most agonizing in British history. They were by British standards exceptionally violent years: our economic performance was dismal; and our society, instead of drawing together as it normally does in a crisis, seemed to become more cantankerous, less generous and less compassionate." Richard Clutterbuck, Britain in Angony. The Growth of Political Violence (London: Faber, 1978), 19.; on the breakdown of the liberal consensus and the problem of industrial relations see Michael Nevin, The Age of Illusions: The Political Economy of Britain 1968-1982 (London: Gollancz, 1983), 162-163.
See Reagan's conclusion: Due to his responsiveness to the "factures and collisions in post-war English culture [...], at the end of the 1970's, Larkin's deep disenchantment with the state of the nation seemed to overpower any creative instinct that was left." "Larkin's Reputation". Ed. Michael Baron, Larkin with Poetry (London: The English Association, 1997), 66-67.

M Professor of English at Purdue, Boruch also teaches in the Warren Wilson MFA program. At Purdue, she won the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1991 and again in 2004. She has also won two Fellowships in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other awards and honors. Her numerous essays on poetry and poets were published first in a variety of literary magazines and then as In the Blue Pharmacy, appeared in 2005. Boruch, an accomplished essayist and poet, rewards our attention. Understanding the influence of Chagall on Boruch can greatly enhance the reading of her first volume of poetry, View from the Gazebo In Gazebo, In exorcising the grandfather figure, the poet does what she must do for the health of her being: to become who she is and not her grandfather on a lesser level. Even so, the enactment of the poem shocks. Boruch explores the mystery of such familial relationships, and how various personas inhabit us. A grandfather provides her with an avenue to an alternate reality. Her next collection

70. Resurgence Editors' Selection - GREEN STREETS ARE 'NAKED' STREETS By Philip Boot

ARE 'NAKED' STREETS Stroud street scene Photo: Philip Booth Removing 'clutter' can help to reclaim our streets and make them safer. INITIALLY I WAS far from enthusiastic about helping Green Party Stroud District Councillor Sarah Lunnon research traffic engineering. The world of traffic and traffic management seemed cold, unfriendly, uniform, predictable and vehicle-orientated. Answers to reducing dangers on our roads, beyond cutting car use, appeared to lie only in further segregating vehicles and pedestrians by adding more signs, barriers, signals and road paint. Indeed, encouraged by a reduction in casualty figures for such an approach, I was one of those who had previously supported more road humps, bumps, chicanes, warning signs, protective guard rails, and so on. My interest in the research was sparked when Sarah pointed out that a closer look at the statistics shows that this approach has come at a cost: the UK's record for child safety is one of the worst in Europe and we have discouraged cyclists and pedestrians from using our streets. She went on to outline a new approach to traffic engineering that turned upside down much that I held true. This new 'shared spaces' approach has been dubbed 'naked streets' by some, because it includes removing highway signage, traffic lights, speed bumps, centre lines and even pedestrian crossings - but there is much more to it than that.

Philip Booth; poetry and Maine were the core of his life; at 81
Philip Booth: "Writing poems is not a career but a lifetime of looking into, and listening to, how words see." (Peter Ralston) July 12, 2007 "Whatever the imagery of my poems," Philip Booth wrote in an autobiographical sketch, "my sense of language is rooted in metaphors native to Maine-talk, where each word counts." Mr. Booth inspired generations of writing students and pursued a poetic ambition that cut a singular path. "One thing about Philip that always astonishes me was how indifferent he was to the pecking order in poetry," said Richard Wilbur of Cummington, a longtime friend and former US poet laureate who has twice won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. "He was altogether his own man, really, and his poetry is the poetry of someone who is his own man." Known for poems such as "Eaton's Boatyard" that celebrate the rectitude of life along the Maine coast, Mr. Booth also explored the contours of his soul, never flinching when the route was shrouded in darkness. He died July 2 in Hanover, N.H., of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Booth was 81 and had lived in Hanover, the town of his birth, and in Castine, Maine, which his ancestors had called home since 1797. "Even though Dad wrote a lot about Maine, his poetry was increasingly over the course of his lifetime more about Maine, as one place in the larger community that is earth, and our connections to one another around the globe," said his daughter Margot Booth of Austin, Texas. "I do think that Castine anchored him in lots of ways. His love of Castine, the people and the place, were lifelines to him all of his days."

Philips' CES booth tour
The Philips amBX should totally win an award for most oddball device which also happens to take itself seriously. This thing includes two mini-Ambilights, two fans (yes, fans ), and a rumble keyboard wrist rest. Whenever anything "exhilarating" happens on screen, these three components combine in an effort to immerse the user. Based on our quick demonstration, your face would get pretty cold after a few hours of running around maps in Quake 4.
You'd be able to see the extra (read: 3rd) dimension that this Philip' prototype 3D display can emulate if a), we'd have photographed it using a non-existent camera that can capture three dimensions, and b), you were reading Engadget on one of Philips' prototype 3D displays. At least you wouldn't need any of those red and green tinted glasses.
