Soak up the 'Tuscan Sun'
For all its sappiness, Diane Lane's first post-Unfaithful film is an entertaining story of loves lost and found.
By PHILIP BOOTH Published September 25, 2003 Photo: Buena Vista Films] Diane Lane stars as Frances, center, with Giulia Steigerwalt as Chiara and Sandra Oh as Patti. Under the Tuscan Sun, director-writer Audrey Wells' first movie since debuting with 1999's far more provocative Guinevere, is alternately giddy and sentimental, an upscale chick flick with pretensions of something loftier. The film, an adaptation of the popular 1996 memoir by Frances Mayes, is An Unmarried Woman crossed with an Italian travelogue, a stranger-in-a-strange land tale of a slightly ditzy, sexually aware, grownup Gidget whose footloose adventures around Tuscany double as a voyage of self-discovery. And the, uh, Great Issue explored by Wells, as voiced by the protagonist: "What is it about love that makes us so stupid?"

Death Tunnel
In all my years of reviewing films I have rarely come across a movie which is quite as blatantly nonsensical as Death Tunnel . But Death Tunnel isn't just dumb, it's wantonly so. It doesn't have any desire to make sense, really. It's a ludicrous ripoff of Saw (good God, couldn't you have done better than that?), which uses a pathetic, phony, "based on a true story" setup to try to sell itself.
Now there probably is a rundown mental hospital in Kentucky, but that's about where the truth of Death Tunnel (oh God, that title ) ends. As near as I can tell as the film not only makes no sense, it's told in flash-forward for the bulk of the movie) the film begins in a bar, as the five coeds with the largest breasts are recruited (or sort-of kidnapped) to participate in a game (or some kind of torture) in the aforementioned abandoned mental institution. The girls are knocked out, bound, and their faces covered with gas masks. When they wake up, they're in the hospital with unclear goals, though we presume they're supposed to escape. A voice over the intercom intones the film's catchphrase "five floors, five girls, five hours" which is somehow the basis for the movie.
As implausible as the setup is, it actually gets worse. Girls murder each other, then take showers

ROUTE 66 U.S. Drama Route 66 was one of the most unique American television dramas of the 1960s, an ostensible adventure series that functioned, in practice, as an anthology of downbeat character studies and psychological dramas. Its 1960 premiere launched two young drifters in a Corvette on an existential odyssey in which they encountered a myriad of loners, dreamers and outcasts in the small towns and big cities along U.S. Highway 66 and beyond. And the settings were real; the gritty social realism of the stories was enhanced by location shooting that moved beyond Hollywood hills and studio backlots to encompass the vast face of the country itself. Route 66 took the anthology on the road, blending the dramaturgy and dramatic variety of the Studio One school of TV drama with the independent filmmaking practices of the New Hollywood. Route 66 was the brainchild of producer Herbert B. Leonard and writer Stirling Silliphant, the same creative team responsible for

Tab Wows 'Em at Skipper's
No wonder Tab Benoit's concert Friday night at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa was sold out: The hard-touring Louisiana blues man was accompanied by an all-star group of players who have worked on Benoit's Voice of the Wetlands recordings and concerts.
"It's crazy so many of y'all came to see us," he said near the start of the show.
Benoit, whose prowess as a singer and guitarist has accelerated rapidly in recent years, headed a band of musicians quite well known in their home state, and among regular visitors to Jazz Fest and the French Quarter Fest.
For the latest leg of his tour, he was joined by Meters bassist George Porter Jr. (one of the finest old-school funk bass players, period); fiddler Waylon Thibodeaux; harmonica and accordion player Jumpin' Johnny Sansone; Big Chief Monk Boudreaux (of Mardi Gras Indian group the Golden Eagles); and drummer David Peters.
And offering terrific rhythm-guitar work and several choice solos was a local "ringer," Tampa Bay area blues guitar favorite
