Erma Bombeck '49, undoubtedly the University of Dayton's most famous graduate and the country's top female humorist, would disagree with Ralph Waldo Emerson's observation that "all educated Americans, first or last, go to Europe."
"I always feel you can do Europe in a wheelchair," Bombeck said before jetting off to Costa Rica for this year's family vacation.  Already on the non-fiction best-seller list, Bombeck's 10th and newest book, When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home, tackles the ups and downs of traveling - from surviving continental breakfasts to "traveling with three kids and dragging a trailer behind us" to Canada on the tail of Ruby's and Rusty's RV called True Love.
Why would anyone who lives in a place called Paradise Valley even want to take a vacation?

Erma Bombeck
by Jan Here's another favorite. I remember reading her columns and laughing so hard that tears would flow! She was a woman who started out with the whole traditional setting of marriage, family, etc., but found out that there was so much more to life and enabled my generation to see this too. I have read all her books and still have many of her columns in my scrapbook. I really miss this woman!
Courtesy of Biography.com "Humorist, author. Born in Dayton, Ohio. America's first lady of household humor, Bombeck turned her views of daily life in the suburbs into satirical newspaper columns and 14 best-selling books, including 'I Lost Everything in the Post Natal Depression(1973),' 'The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank(1976),' and 'If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?(1978).'
"Bombeck began a career in journalism after graduating from the University of Dayton, but left the paper in 1953 to start a family with husband Bill. Once her children were of school age, Bombeck convinced the editor of a local paper to let her produce a column. The result, a weekly column called At Wit's End, was syndicated within a year and was eventually published in 700 papers across the country. "In 1993, Bombeck's kidneys failed as a result of the polycistic kidney disease she was diagnosed with at age 20. In 1996, Bombeck died from complications arising from a failed kidney transplant."

Erma Bombeck biography: a life of humor
Erma Bombeck had one of the longest running columns in newspaper history. At the same time, she battled breast cancer and a deadly kidney disorder.
Erma Louise (Harris) Bombeck was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1927. Her father, a crane operator, died of a stroke when Erma was just 9-years old, leaving the family in near-poverty like conditions after their home and furniture were repossessed by the bank. At the age of 20, Bombeck was diagnosed with polycistic kidney disease, a hereditary disorder which causes cysts to form on the kidneys. Told that she would one day suffer kidney failure, Erma went on with her life, destined not to be controlled by her disease. Erma enrolled in the University of Dayton during her sophomore year after attending Ohio University for her first year of college. . Longing to be a journalist, Erma was told by professors that she would never succeed in writing. Hoping to prove them wrong, in 1949, Erma took her first job in the field of journalism, as a reporter for the Ohio Journal Herald. That same year, she married Bill Bombeck, a school administrator, she had met and courted in college. After just five years with the paper, Erma and Bill were ready to start a family, and she left her career behind. The couple had three children during the 1950s: Betsy, Andy, and Matt. During this same time, Erma's mother, a factory worker, passed away. Neither of her parents lived to experience her phenomenal success.

  • A friend doesn't go on a diet because you are fat. A friend never defends a husband who gets his wife an electric skillet for her birthday. A friend will tell you she saw your old boyfriend-and he's a priest. All of us have moments in out lives that test our courage. Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them. Anybody who watches three games of football in a row should be declared brain dead. Being a child at home alone in the summer is a high-risk occupation. If you call your mother at work thirteen times an hour, she can hurt you. Car designers are just going to have to come up with an automobile that outlasts the payments. Did you ever notice that the first piece of luggage on the carousel never belongs to anyone Do you know what you call those who use towels and never wash them, eat meals and never do the dishes, sit in rooms they never clean, and are entertained till they drop? If you have just answered, "A house guest," you're wrong because I have just described my kids. Don't confuse fame with success. Madonna is one; Helen Keller is the other.

Web posted at: 12:15 p.m. EDT SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) Erma Bombeck, the housewife-turned-columnist who made fun of life in the suburbs, died Monday. She was 69. She died at a hospital in San Francisco, where she had undergone a kidney transplant earlier this month, said Alan McDermott, senior editor at Universal Press Syndicate. "Her family is shocked and saddened," a spokeswoman in her agent's office said. Bombeck's books include "The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank," "I Lost Everything in the Postnatal Depression," and "When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home." Bombeck was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in 1992. Shortly afterward, her kidneys began failing and she underwent dialysis four times a day at her home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The writer was on waiting lists to receive a kidney transplant until early this month, when a suitable donor match was found. She underwent the operation at the Medical Center of the University of California-San Francisco. The hospital said only that she died "from medical complications following a kidney transplant."

Bombeck Competition Celebrates 10th Year
More than 1,300 writers from 21 countries and 48 states (plus Washington, D.C.) entered the 2006 Erma Bombeck Writing Competition sponsored by Washington-Centerville Public Library and the University of Dayton . In the end, judges chose essays from the Dayton area, as well as Jamestown, Rhode Island and Liberty, Missouri as winners in the competition's tenth year. "The growth since the competition's introduction in 1997 has been incredible," comments Mike Colvin, coordinator of the annual contest. "In each of the first three years, we received between 50 and 100 entries, and were thrilled with the response. We now draw between 1,000 and 1,500 entries each year from all over the nation and the world. It's rewarding to host a competition that encourages so many writers not only in Erma's home town, but also as far away as Nigeria, Luxembourg, and Malaysia." Colvin credits the high response rate to Bombeck's broad appeal, the fact that the competition does not charge an entry fee, and the Library's partnership with the University of Dayton, where the

T HESE M OMS S HARE S PECIAL G IFTS by Erma Bombeck (published without permission...hope she doesn't mind -tjw) Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple by habit. This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger. 'Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint Matthew. Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, patron saint Cecelia. Rudledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity.' Finally he passes a name to an angel and smiles, 'Give her a handicapped child.' The angel is curious, 'Why this one, God? She's so happy.' 'Exactly,' says God. 'Could I give a handicapped child a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel.' 'But has she patience?' asks the angel. 'I don't want her to have too much patience, or she will drown in a sea of self pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has his own world. She has to make him live in her world, and that's not going to be easy.'
