A journey into Montessori teaching
BY DAVID ROBINSON
(Main Line Times, Thursday July 11, 2002, Page 11) As educators constantly test and implement theories of learning, standout alternative to traditional classrooms have been the child-centered methods of Maria Montessori. As Montessori schools flourish throughout the world, locally, one teacher has experience with both traditional and Montessori methods. Meg Bolton teaches elementary students at the Gladwyne Montessori School, but her career has taken a circuitous route. She began studying elementary education at West Chester University. She remembers, “It was a great school but since this was the 1960s, nobody mentioned learning differences.” One day, a teacher asked the students whether a classroom should be run in democratic, autocratic or child centered way. “I was the only one who said, ‘child centered.’ She looked at me and said, ‘You ought to go into Montessori teaching.’ I had never heard of it.” After graduation, Bolton went to Lancaster County to teach second grade. According to the standard curriculum, they would study plants for three weeks, then study of the moon. One of her students was still interested in plants, because his grandmother grew herbs. He wanted to make a chart of medicinal plants.

You will find your old aunt a little breathless at times taking too much satisfaction in the description of a flower-decked folly at the World's Fair or the perfect leaf-green cocktail dress. (She describes things as "gay" or "splendid.") But she is by no means frivolous. She possesses a ferocious judgment, and reminds you in a way that is oddly moving of the atmosphere and concerns of another age. Beyond the lamplit Upper East Side drawing rooms and idle cocktail party chatter described so deftly in these stories loom the shadows of big events the Second World War, the atom bomb, modern art filling the museums, the growing practice of psychoanalysis. In your aunt's voice you hear how shattering these advents were to the old conventions. Bolton's voice is stylized and discursive, painting detailed pictures in quick strokes, yet broad in its historical perspective. Bolton's detractors call it "old-fashioned" and her converts "delicate," "dry" and "precise." The words of praise come from none less than Diana Trilling and Edmund Wilson, who argue that Bolton has a pointillist's touch: Up close, it's just a bunch of pastel dots, but from the right distance, powerful figures coalesce.

This school was among the first in the United States to be modeled on the reforms of Florence Nightingale. Before the hospital training school, Nightingale wrote nurses "were generally those who were too old, too weak, too drunken, too dirty, too stolid, or too bad to do anything else" At John Hopkins Hospital where Isabel Hampton served as superintendent of nurses, she published Nursing: Its Principles and Practice for Hospital and Private use (1894). During those years she helped found the Nurses Associated Alumnae (later the American Nurses Association) and served as its first president. Her marriage to Hunter Robb, a physician who took a post at Lakeside Hospital, brought Robb to Cleveland in 1894. Isabel Robb exerted a profound influence on the creation and early years of Lakeside Training School. Convinced that nursing the sick should go hand-in-hand with educating patients in how to preserve health, she also helped to found the Cleveland Visiting Nurse Association in 1901. Robb's prominence as an advocate for nursing attracted a group of young socially prominent Cleveland woman who became volunteers for the Visiting Nurse Association, among them Kate Hanna Harvey, Florence Brewster, Isabel Wetmore Lowman, and Frances Payne Bolton.

He returned to Toowoomba in 1935 to establish his own accountancy practice, and on 1 June at Sandgate, with Presbyterian forms, married Marion Isabel Salisbury. With Percy Redman as partner, Bolton purchased a transport business, registered as Redmans Transport on 24 June 1943. The enterprise proved successful, largely due to lucrative contracts with Paul's Dairy Co. Freeman Cobb . Although the original company had gone into liquidation in 1929, Gordon Studdert, its last secretary, retained the name and threatened legal action. A settlement was reached in 1954 with Bolton acquiring the name, which was later also used on his extensive motor coach service operating throughout the eastern States. In Queensland, the end of World War II provided unparalleled opportunities for road transport, while the railways were burdened with ageing rolling stock and strikes. Between 1948 and 1950 Bolton and Redman bought new, larger trucks and registered several subsidiary transport companies to serve southern Queensland. Conflict ensued, with the
