bewerk Biografie

An event in cooperation with the AICGS. This book, written by Paul Hockenos, is both a lively biography of one of Germany’s most famous politicians and an insightful alternative history of postwar Germany. It utilizes Fischer as a penetrating lens through which to view Germany’s metamorphosis as well as the diverse postwar movements, grassroots campaigns, and civic initiatives that eventually lead to a liberal and democratic Germany after the Holocaust.

Heinrich B¶ll
Heinrich B¶ll (1917-1985), Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum
Heinrich B¶ll himself regarded his 1974 publication as a "pamphlet disguised as a narrative": the story of the respectable housekeeper Katharina Blum, who (apparently) becomes a murderess with no evident cause. It was aimed at the tabloid press, the BILD-Zeitung in particular, and the development of its unscrupulous, brutal, 'fascist' power which falsifies everything and is accountable to no-one. Since the atmosphere was already highly charged due to the beginnings of the Rote-Armee-Fraktion's terror campaign and the discussions about an appropriate reaction from the state, the 1972 Nobel prize-winner's book really exploded onto the scene. On one hand there was great enthusiasm, and on the other the most venomous scorn, with all possible gradations in between. Heinrich B¶ll had evidently hit German society of the day in a very vulnerable spot. And that is surely partly why this piece of prose has attained such significance: the ills which it diagnosed are chronic. Text by Gerhardt Csejka Tips

Billard um Halbzehn marks a stylistic departure from the conventional novel, recounting within the space of 24 hours the key historical events and conflicts of the 20th century as reflected in the lives of three generations of a family of architects. An amusing, sharp attack on relentless authoritarianism and bureaucracy is found in Gruppenbild mit Dame , rich in incident and with a wealth of characters.

Vorstellung des Nachkriegsautoren
