Denis Donoghue, The New York Review of Books Universally acknowledged as the preeminent female poet of her native Ireland, Eavan Boland was born in Dublin in 1944 and has published nine volumes of poetry. She made her American debut with Outside History: Selected Poems 1980-1990, followed by In a Time of Violence , which explored what she called "the history of silences: the unspoken, the unwritten, the forgotten names, invisible chronicles." More recently, The Lost Land (1998) explores a series of metaphors for life's moments of transition and transformation, as well as, literally, the Ireland she has left behind. But the painful transitions are necessary, as a poem to her daughter, "The Blossom," suggests: Then holds out a dawn-soaked hand to me
whose fingers I counted at birth years ago.

Domestic Violence: Poems by Eavan Boland
It is the final day of poetry month and I just now have a book to recommend. I started five or six other poetry volumes in the past two months and never got past page 20. I was not the right reader and they were not the right books. Finally, I found Domestic Violence: Poems by Eavan Boland, which I absorbed in two days.
Boland is direct and visual. Reading her poems calls forth many sharp images, as in her poem "How It Was Once in Our Country":
"In those years I owned a blue plate,
blue from the very edge to the center,
ocean-blue, the sort of under-wave blue
a mermaid could easily dive down into and enter."
In "Irish Interior" she describes an old drawing in which a woman spins and a man stands by his loom. They are permanently separated, unable to touch each other. Many of her poems express sadness for what has been or never been.
"And Soul" may be my favorite poem in the collection. Boland links the moisture of atmosphere and ocean to the liquid content of the human body. I read it during a thunderstorm, hearing the rain on my roof and windows. I think I began to perspire. Water is also the key element in"On This Earth" and "In Season."

Does Eavan Boland's "Anorexic" Strike a Chord?
A friend referred me to a poem that left me stunned in its imagery and raw powerEavan Boland's "Anorexic." The poem suggests (screams, really) that anorexia may seem to be a path to a unique purity. And what is the impurity that needs cleansing? Boland seems to say that women have been told not to hunger or desire, and that renouncing all wants is a way in which some have attempted to become free. Through her language, Boland is also clear that renouncing all wants is violent toward the self. While I can empathize with the sense of feeling dark and wanting to be made pure, Boland has written "Anorexic" largely as a comment on the feminine. Being a man, I cannot speak accurately on whether being a woman lets one identify with the poem more easily, but the friend who told me about the poem said that every man in her poetry group was left wondering what was going on, and that every woman identified strongly with Boland's words (though none had eating disorders). What do you think? Has Boland touched on powerful truths that are uniquely feminine? Is it just drama? Do you have eating disorder-related poems that you find helpful, or some that you have written yourself?

Post Top ... Linda Sue Grimes - "It's a woman's world" Dear Poetry Reader, Why do people use that absurd statement at all? Obviously, it is not a woman's world, it is not a man's world, it is not a dog's world, cat's world, child's world, tree's worldunless, of course, it is all of them. They all have an affect on the world, all participatebut none can claim sole proprietorship. So, does such a claim have any significance? Thank you for participating. I look forward to your response. Shouting across the Distance:
Liminal States in Eavan Boland's Outside History
    by
Rachel Galvin "I began writing in a country where the word woman and the word poet were almost magnetically opposed," Eavan Boland writes in her collection of autobiographical essays, Object Lessons: The Life of the Woman Poet in Our Time . "It became part of my working life, part of my discourse, to see these lives evade and simplify each other. I became used to the flawed space between them. In a certain sense, I found my poetic voice by shouting across that distance" (xi). As an Irish woman poet, Boland is positioned at the fulcrum of a number of socio-political and poetic binaries. Her poetry deals directly with tensions between traditional Irish definitions of woman and man, woman and poet, daily life and history, history and myth, and the ordinary and the poetic. Of central concern to Boland is the opposition between the socially loaded words woman and poet, which she says are like "oil and water and could not be mixed." To negotiate between the mutually exclusive roles of woman and poet, Boland situates herself between the two in a "flawed space," or liminal position
