Jeremiah Learns to Read is a beautiful book, not only aesthetically but in content. Jo Ellen Bogart, a best selling author, has written a heartwarming story for young children about Jeremiah, a man in his twilight years, who decides he must learn to read. Jeremiah is shown eventually writing stories, going to the library, and reading poems to his wife. His wife is now inspired to learn to read. Jeremiah Learns to Read The paintings are enhanced by the autumn foliage in its reds and golds, which totally charmed my granddaughter. BACK to Entertainment Page

Biography
Jo Ellen was born in Houston, Texas and spent her formative years in various cities of that state. At the University of Texas in Austin, she received degrees in elementary education and psychology. Here she met her Canadian zoologist husband, with whom she made two trips to South America to study the local amphibians. They moved to Guelph, Ontario at the beginning of 1975 and have raised a son and a daughter there. Jo Ellen worked as a supply teacher for several years, enjoying especially her experiences in school libraries. A real animal lover, Jo Ellen has had many interesting pets over the years including Clyde the coatimundi, who played a supporting role in her book Sarah Saw Blue Macaw, on page 25, and two Peruvian parrotlets who appear on pages 8 and 9. The family's rescued chipmunk, Alvin, lived to be an elderly eight years old, sleeping from November to March each year. Astro, the African clawed frog, has been a member of the family since he was a whiskered tadpole some twenty five years ago, and lovable Argentine desert tortoise Tor Tor was a favorite of everyone who met him. Current pets include two large furry dogs (Sadie the Aussie and Wendell the Border Collie), Astro and an Australian tree frog named Twolong, along with a ton of fish. Jo Ellen also loves reading, gardening, swimming, and web surfing. She has really enjoyed opportunities to visit and speak to children in many parts of Canada and likes to hear from her readers.

Question:
What do Jo Ellen Bogart and Archimedes have in common?
Answer: Both had a "eureka" bathtub-discovery experience. While Archimedes found a scientific principle, Jo Ellen discovered the plot for her first book, Malcolm's Runaway Soap. Explains Jo Ellen, " Malcolm actually did start off in my own bathtub. I use that kind of glycerine soap that becomes very clear and thins to a sliver The bar had stuck to the bottom of the tub, and I really couldn't quite get it up. In my mind, I did a little turnaround, 'The soap's stuck to the tub. What, if instead of being stuck to the tub, it were flying about?' In other words, from no movement to excess movement. Then I thought, 'Oh, you could have a real chase going on.' Of course, the book's totally in the traditional vein of all those little edible creatures that ran away. Basically, I just designed the book on the platform of something running away, what/who you meet, and the reactions of the other people. It reeled itself out. 'Oh my gosh,' I thought. 'I like that.' I put on my pyjamas, jumped into bed and wrote it in this tiny little spiral notebook from Zellers."
The eldest of four children, Jo Ellen Bogart was born in Houston, Texas, on October 20, 1945. Her father was in management with the telephone company, and, as Jo Ellen remarks, "Companies seem to like to move people around, and so every two and half or three years we would move. That's disruptive to a young life. Every time you have to move, you get that sinking feeling in your stomach. 'Oh no. I finally just got everything fixed here the way I wanted, and now I have to move.' I went to elementary school in Houston and San Antonio, junior high in Dallas and Houston, and high school in Houston. With an October birthday and the Houston cut-off being September, I was almost seven when I started school. Because I lived in the country and didn't have swarms of kids to play with, I was more than ready to go. The siblings didn't really happen until I was five, and they took my mother's attention away from me somewhat. To then, I'd been the only child. The funny thing about
