A Poet's Prose: Selected Writings of Louise Bogan showcases her devotion to compression, eloquence, and sharp truths.
Praise Publishers Weekly
"Self-aware, self-berating and perpetually anxious about her poetic output, Bogan has a sharp and at time neurotic mind fully on display. Her letters reveal the warm intellectual friendships that sustained her...but her critical essays are the volume's highlight, composed in an unmistakably personalize, flowing and penetrating critical voice." 05/30/2005

    Notes on Life and Works
Louise Bogan was born in Livermore, Maine, August 11, 1897, and was educated at the Girls' Latin High School and Boston University, which she left without taking a degree. Her first marriage, to Curt Alexander, an army officer, in 1916, was effectively over by 1918. Their daughter Maidie was born Oct. 19, 1917, but was raised by Bogan's parents. Alexander died in 1920. In 1923, a year after she received the first of three Guggenheim fellowships (1922, 1933, 1937), her first book of poetry, Body of this Death: Poems , came out. She married poet Raymond Holden in 1925. This was followed by her second book

Louise Bogan, it will be noted, lived to the age of 72. Her last book of poetry, The Blue Estuaries: Poems 1923-1968 was published the year before she died, and collected in one volume all the poems she had selected for, as they say, her personal oeuvre. Throughout her life Bogan exerted almost complete control over which of her poems were published and which were not; her habit with each book, beginning with her first book Body of This Death (1923), was to exclude any previously published poems which no longer met her standards. Thus, Body of This Death included only one of five poems that had originally been published in the Chicago-based magazine Poetry just two years before. The following book

Life often appeared tragic in her poetic vision, as shown in her first book, Body of This Death (1923). Like England's metaphysical poets of the 17th century, she produced intense verses by expressing deep, personal emotions. In 1955 she was one of the recipients of the Bollingen Prize—awarded by Yale University for achievement in American poetry—for her Collected Poems 1923-53 (1954). As poetry editor of The New Yorker magazine in the 1930s and after, and as a critic, she had much influence on young American poets. Many of her articles are collected in

“Under the subtle wreath”: Louise Bogan, Felicia Hemans, and Petrarchan Poetics
Author Nanora Sweet University of Missouri-St. Louis Abstract Louise Bogan joked that in a former life she had been “Felicia Hemans.” A lush Romantic and an austere Modernist, Hemans and Bogan appear polar opposites, yet these learned women poets shared a laureate poetics of Love and Fame. Hemans alludes directly to Petrarch’s laureate triumph in “The Magic Glass”; in poetry and prose she portrays the difficult laureateships of Sappho and Tasso. Both Hemans and Bogan seemed laureates to their contemporaries and successors, yet both found laurels an ambiguous donn©e , Bogan a “burden” among flowers, Hemans a fiery crown for the likes of “the Bride of the Greek Isle.” Petrarch gained his laurels in a formal triumph at Rome, a scene mandating abjuration and entailing defeat.
