Judy Blume Boxed Set (Fudge-a-Mania, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge) by Judy Blume Published by Random House Buy it online Judy Blume and her husband George Cooper meet me at a chic tea room on Vancouver's west side. You know the kind of place: elegant, understated, quiet jazz piped through discreetly hidden speakers and the staff are quiet, unobtrusive and look as though chocolate wouldn't melt in their mouths. I've done many interviews in this same tearoom and never been paid any attention: "please" and "thank you" and "would you like more hot water?" Authors even really well-known ones seldom attract much attention.
And then there's Judy Blume. Near the end of our interview, one of the wait staff breaks away from the others, "Excuse me," she says. "Miss Blume. I'm sorry to intrude. It's just that I wanted to say how much your books have meant to me over the years."
Blume takes both of the girl's hands in her own and shakes them gently. "Thank you," she says. "That means so much to me." And all hell breaks loose. The quiet understated staff comprised of mostly young women crowd around: the elegant facade quite forgotten. They are not frightening, you understand. They are not demanding. What they want is to give something even if the something is emotion back to the woman they feel has given them so much.
"This happens all the time," Blume confides later. "It's really nice. And they always want to give." An instamatic camera is produced and a photo is taken of Blume with a bevy of tea servers and entrepreneurs ranged around her adoringly.

Writers and Readers in Key West
I started this entry ten days ago. But it's turned into a diary of this year's Key West Literary Seminars. Just for the record I'm on the board and a member of this year's committee, along with Bob Richardson, Jim Gleick, and Liz Lear. Maybe that will help explain my elation at how well it went, and my exhaustion (for real) now that it's over.
Tuesday, January 15 We're in the midst of the KW Literary Seminars.
This year the topic is New Voices and instead of our usual Thursday to Sunday Seminar, this time we're hosting two.
Most years the Literary Seminar is presented to an audience of about 400 readers , making it very different from the usual writers' festival. This year is an exception as we've given out $70,000 in scholarships, allowing many new writers to attend for the first time. After all, we wanted those New Voices! There were also scholarships for teachers and librarians. And between the two weekend Seminars, there are nine writer's workshops taking place. As I write this my friend Hilma Wolitzer is conducting her workshop in our garden. She has 12 students and they're laughing a lot, making me wish I could be a part of it. I also wish she could give me a seminar in how to conduct a writers' workshop. Hilma is at the far end of the table, in white.

Cynthis Leitch Smith is a children's and young adult author, and her Judy Blume interview was conducted via email in 2002, just before "Double Fudge" was published. Q: "What is your writing process like?" A: "I keep a notebook for months before I actually sit down to begin a new book. Before I start the notebook I have a vague idea of the characters and their story, usually something that's been brewing inside my head, sometimes for months, sometimes for years."

Don Swaim Interviews
Audio Interview with Judy Blume
Judy Blume is the author of many famous children's books, such as Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret Superfudge and adult fiction, including Wifey and Smart Women. She talks with Don Swaim in this 1984 interview about the large amount of wisdom found within the pages of children's stories that can benefit both adults and children alike. The books she read as a child growing up in suburban New Jersey only told tales of happy families where everything always was fine. She wanted to read books that showed feelings and problems. She wanted characters she could identify with. These feelings returned when she became an adult. Some of her topics include divorce, puberty, sexuality, money, humor and the pain of life. "It’s real life," she said. But, not every adult was appreciative of her efforts. Several parent groups around the country have banned her books from school libraries claiming the content is too controversial. In one case in Colorado, however, a 12-year-old girl fought against the ban and won by getting students to sign a petition and attending to the school board in protest. Interview with Children's and YA Author Judy Blume
Judy Blume is the author of numerous books for readers of all ages, from picture books to middle grade and teen novels, to fiction for adults. Her titles include: ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARARET (Atheneum, 2001)(reprint edition); BLUBBER (Bradbury, 1974); the FUDGE series; FOREVER (Atheneum, 2002)(reprint edition); and SUMMER SISTERS (Delacorte, 1998). This interview was conducted via email in August-September 2002. Visit Judy Blume Everyone is eager to learn about your new book, DOUBLE FUDGE. Can you give us a hint as to what it's about?
In this book, five year old Fudge Hatcher becomes obsessed by money - he's drawing dollar signs at breakfast, thumbing through catalogs at bedtime, and making enough "Fudge Bucks" to buy the whole world (or, at least, Toys "R" Us) an embarrassment to his entire family, especially his older brother, Peter, who is just starting seventh grade. As if that weren't bad enough, the Hatchers meet up with their long lost (and eccentric) relatives, the Howie Hatchers of Honolulu, Hawaii, who happen to have twin daughters exactly Peter's age (who burst into song at the drop of a hat) plus a weird little boy.

Judy Blume for President
Meet the woman who invented American adolescence. By Ellen Barry Presumably, puberty would have happened without Judy Blume books, but there's no way to know for sure. A professor of mine once argued at great length that Shakespeare had invented modern love, because before we knew the words "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo" we didn't know how love was supposed to feel. Shakespeare himself may have thought he was merely depicting what already existed, but for a modern reader the two can no longer be untangled. This sort of thing is hard to research. By comparison, there is a large body of evidence to the effect that Judy Blume is responsible for puberty as we know it. Talk to women in their 20s about Judy Blume and take note of the sweet, reminiscent looks that come over their faces. This isn't a matter of personal preference, like Nancy Drew versus Trixie Belden. When Blume came to town last week promoting her new adult novel, Summer Sisters (Delacorte Press), I called a series of fierce, intelligent women to find out what nail-you-to-the-wall questions they might have for the Poet of Puberty. None were forthcoming. Several of these women responded simply, "We must we must we must increase our bust!" One woman gurgled that

We didn’t talk about problems in our family. We kept our feelings to ourselves…I had a lot of questions but I was afraid to ask them.
