Blume's novels for elementary schoolers were among the first to tackle such controversial matters as racism Iggie's House menstruation Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret ... Then Again, Maybe I Won't ) and teenage sexuality Forever ). Fans of Blume's novels have praised her use of real-life settings, ambivalent endings and gentle humor. Her allegedly ambiguous treatment of moral issues made her at one time a regular target of school library censors and the religious right . Her books are still often challenged in school libraries; in fact, Forever was the second most challenged book of 2005, according to the American Library Association. She is recognized as one of the most banned children's authors in the United States

Executive summary: Author of children's books Judy Blume writes books for kids, but not "kiddie books". Her settings and characters are a lot like life, and she was the first children's author to successfully deal with real-world issues, like divorce (It's Not the End of the World) and menstruation ( Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret Forever tells of a teenaged boy and girl who fall in love and have sex. The book was groundbreaking when it came out in 1975, because the heroine didn't get pregnant, didn't get a sexually-transmitted disease, didn't get lectured by some sanctimonious authority figure, and didn't get punished in any way. She went on the pill, lost her virginity, and her life went on, just like it will for a hundred thousand teenagers this afternoon. Blume's Deenie , about a girl with scoliosis, has recently been optioned by Walt Disney Pictures. Disney and

Biography
Judy Blume was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on February 12, 1938 to Rudolph and Esther (Rosenfeld) Sussman. Her parents were also born and raised in Elizabeth. The Sussmans had known each other since they were teenagers and married when Dr. Sussman graduated from dental school. As a child, Judy would often creep up into the attic of the family home to play. She would dress up in all sorts of homemade costumes and make-up and star in her own feature films. Her brother David, who was four years older than she, would often tease her for the adventures she would create when playing with her dolls. Judy didn't care, though, because she wanted to be a movie star when she grew up. Judy also enjoyed reading. She would often go to the library with her mother.

http://www.incwell.com/Biographies/Blume,Judy.html
Judy Blume Researcher: Christen Shaw Judy Blume was born Judy Sussman on February 12, 1938 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The daughter of a dentist and a homemaker, Judy dreamed of becoming many extraordinary things when she grew up. In her mind, she could see herself being a detective, a cowgirl, a famous actress, or a ballerina. She was highly imaginative and spent much of her time writing stories and making up characters in her head, but never wrote any of it down. After graduating from an all-girls public high school on New Jersey, Judy attended college at New York University. There she met John M. Blume. They were married in 1959, Judy's junior year of college. In 1961 she received her bachelor's degree in education. That same year, she had her first child, her daughter Randy. In 1963, she had her son, Larry. Judy and her family lived in suburban New Jersey. She had her degree, but never became a teacher. Much like when she was a child, she would daydream and write stories in her head as she did her household chores. She started to write her stories down when her children began preschool. After two years of rejection letters, Blume was feeling discouraged. She enrolled in a children's writing course at New York University. Although she believes no one can teach you how to write, she felt she needed the support and encouragement. When the session ended, she reenrolled and took the class again. During that second semester, she sold some of her stories to magazines, got her first picture book accepted for publishing, and wrote most of her book

Judy Blume When I was growing up, I dreamed about becoming a cowgirl, a detective, a spy, a great actress, or a ballerina. Not a dentist, like my father, or a homemaker, like my mother and certainly not a writer, although I always loved to read. I didn't know anything about writers. It never occurred to me they were regular people and that I could grow up to become one, even though I loved to make up stories inside my head.
I made up stories while I bounced a ball against the side of our house. I made up stories playing with paper dolls. And I made them up while I practiced the piano by pretending to give piano lessons. I even kept a notebook with the names of my pretend students and how they were doing. I always had an active imagination. But I never wrote down any of my stories. And I never told anyone about them.
When I grew up, my need for storytelling didn't go away. So when my own two children started preschool I began to write and I've been writing ever since! My characters live inside my head for a long time before I actually start a book about them. Then, they become so real to me I talk about them at the dinner table as if they are real. Some people consider this weird. But my family understands.
Many of my books are set in New Jersey because that's where I was born and raised. I lived there until my kids finished elementary school. Then we moved to New Mexico, the setting for
